STAYING ON TRACK
If you miss a train or face delays on a journey,
Peter Stewart has phrases to help out
1. Matt and Ellie were due to travel on the 9.19am train from Marseille to Paris but their taxi to
the station got stuck in traffic. They report to the ticket office to ask about a later departure.
TICKET AGENT: Hello. How
may I help you?
AGENT D’ACCUEIL:
Bonjour. Comment puis-je
vous aider?
ELLIE: Oh no! How much is
a new ticket, then?
ELLIE: Ah mince! Et un
nouveau billet de train coûte
combien alors?
MATT: We missed our train
to Paris because we got stuck
in a traffic jam. Do you know
whether it will be possible
to change our tickets for
a later train?
MATT: Nous avons raté le
train pour Paris parce qu’on
était bloqué dans un
embouteillage. Savez-vous
s’il serait possible de changer
nos billets pour un train
plus tard?
TICKET AGENT: May I see
your tickets?
AGENT D’ACCUEIL: Puis-je
voir vos billets?
MATT: Here you are.
MATT: Tenez.
TICKET AGENT: I see that
you have tickets which were
bought in advance via our
website. These are cheaper
than the standard tickets
available here at the station
and as you missed your
designated train, you will
have to pay for a new ticket.
AGENT D’ACCUEIL: Je vois
que vous avez des billets
réservés à l’avance via notre
site internet. Ceux-ci sont
toujours moins cher que les
billets standard disponibles ici
en gare et comme vous avez
manqué votre train désigné,
vous devrez payer
un nouveau billet.
TICKET AGENT: A single to
Paris is €96. And you can use
this ticket on any train
departing before 4pm.
AGENT D’ACCUEIL: Un aller
simple pour Paris coûte €96.
Et le billet sera valable sur
n’importe quel train qui part
avant 16h.
ELLIE: Wow, that is
expensive! But we don’t have
a choice. We need to get to
Paris today as we are going
to a wedding reception
this evening.
ELLIE: Oh, ça coûte cher
alors! Mais nous n’avons pas
le choix. Il faut aller à Paris
aujourd’hui parce qu’on a une
réception de mariage ce soir.
TICKET AGENT: Do you
want to pay by card?
AGENT D’ACCUEIL:
Voulez-vous payer par carte
bancaire?
MATT: Yes, please.
MATT: Je veux bien.
[A FEW MINUTES LATER]
[QUELQUES MINUTES
PLUS TARD]
TICKET AGENT: That’s all
gone through. Here are your
tickets. The next train to Paris
leaves in 15 minutes from
platform B.
AGENT D’ACCUEIL: Alors
c’est bon. Voici vos billets. Le
prochain train pour Paris part
dans 15 minutes, voie B.
[30 MINUTES LATER]
[30 MINUTES PLUS TARD]
TRAIN CONDUCTOR:
Tickets please, ladies and
gentlemen.
CONTRÔLEUR DE TRAIN:
Mesdames et messieurs, vos
billets s’il vous plaît.
ELLIE: Did you validate our
tickets at the machine on
the platform?
ELLIE: Est-ce que tu as
composté nos billets dans la
machine?
MATT: No, I thought you
were going to do it!
MATT: Mais non, je croyais
que tu allais le faire!
TRAIN CONDUCTOR: Ah,
I see that you have not
validated your tickets. You
must always stamp them
before boarding the train,
otherwise you are liable to
pay a fine.
CONTRÔLEUR DE TRAIN:
Ah, je vois que vous n’avez
pas composté vos billets.
Il faut toujours le faire avant
de monter dans le train,
sinon vous vous exposez
à une amende.
MATT: Yes I know, and we
are sorry. We missed our first
train and had to pay a
fortune for two new tickets.
We didn’t have much time,
and we simply forgot to
stamp them. How much is
the fine?
MATT: Oui je sais, et nous
sommes désolés. Nous avons
manqué notre premier train et
on a dû payer deux nouveaux
billets. On n’avait pas
beaucoup de temps et on a
tout bonnement oublié de les
composter. C’est combien,
l’amende?
TRAIN CONDUCTOR: It is
€20 each for a ticket that is
not validated.
CONTRÔLEUR DE TRAIN:
C’est €20 par personne pour
un billet non composté.
MATT: Here is €40 for the
two of us. We have learned
our lesson.
MATT: Tenez, €40 pour nous
deux. On ne fera pas deux
fois la même erreur.
