History
NagraID’s history began in 1999, when Mr. André Kudelski and the
inventor from Chaux-de-Fon, Mr. François Droz, the owner of
Thermoplex SA, came together to found a joint-venture, the objective
of which was to develop the numerous patents belonging to the latter.
In October 2001, NagraID became the Kudelski Group’s main site for
the production of standard chip cards and radio frequency contactless
cards (RFID), destined for use in access systems.
Founded in 1951, the Kudelski Group is renowned for the manufacture
of cassette players. The main offices are at Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne and
the Group employs more than 1,400 people.
Over a period of twenty years, the Kudelski Group has become the
world leader in Security Technology: conditional access controls and
data exchange (digital television, Broadband Internet and video downloading),
as well as physical access controls for various sorts of sites.
Certifications for the production of bankcards and government documents
By obtaining the stringent ISO 9001: 2000 and EMV (EuroPay/
MasterCard/VISA) certifications, NagraID joined a very small group of
manufacturers of government documents (ID cards, Health cards,
Driving Licences, etc.) and bankcards (debit and credit).
Bankcards and government document cards use secure printing solutions,
identical to those found on banknotes: graphics with special
raster and half-tone screens, special inks, holograms and a raised effect
for tactile control. Thanks to a permanent dialogue with Swiss world
leaders in secure printing, NagraID offers its clients the guarantee of
optimum protection against counterfeiting.
NagraID has first-class references in access control. One of these is the
World Economic Forum (WEF) which takes place each year in Davos,
Switzerland and brings together world leaders from the government
and economic spheres.
Biometric authentication
The constant increase in the amount of data that can be kept on an electronic
chip has now led to the possibility of storing information about
the owner of the card: biometric data. This data makes it possible to
automatically identify an individual based on his physiological or behavioural
characteristics. In the field of access control, the following biometric
data is taken into account: fingerprints, iris, voice and face. Other
information, useful for a person’s health, such as the blood group, the
DNA code or a medical file, can also be held on this type of memory.
COMPANY PROFILE
Production of printed
electronic chip cards
Mr. Frédéric Clauss, General Manager
When you have the privilege of visiting the 12,000 square meters of offices, workshops and clean rooms that make up the
NagraID SA production site in Crêt-du-Locle (NE), you realise immediately that this amount of space is necessary, because
of the multiple phases and stages in the production of a plastic card, from the graphic design to the rolling and laminating
processes, and including the insertion of electronic chips and the installation of magnetic bands.
Carte identitaire à display (première mondiale)
New developments
NagraID is at the forefront of development projects, which allows
it to place its products on all 5 continents.
An example of a successful project: the famous SKI Data card,
that can be read at a distance on more than 3,500 sites around
the world such as ski resorts, stadiums, car parks and amusement
parks.
At the end of 2005, in partnership with other industrialists NagraID
achieved a revolutionary development by integrating a processor, a
battery and an LCD screen into a card answering to ISO standards
(0.86mm thick). This solution makes it possible to provide dynamic
security for bankcards and other applications, thanks to the display of
an access code that can be changed every 30 seconds. The next step
from this development is already well under way, with biometric
digital control of the card’s holder.
