Basque Culture 2000
New authors, professionals in the world of Basque culture, provide
us with a critical commentary of the cultural events that have been
taking place during the year 2000. Erramun Baxok focuses on the
socio-linguistics in the North Basque Country; Mikel Bujanda provides
a general assessment of cultural activity in Navarra; Andolin
Eguzkitza reminds us of the Galeusca Congress that took place in
October 2000; Ritxi Lizartza reflects on the strengthening of theatrical
activity; both Xabier Mendiguren Elizegi and Laura Mintegi
assess literary production; Allande Sokarros focuses on the analysis
of cultural events in Zuberoa; Andres Urrutia adds several notes regarding
cultural, political and literary matters this year and finally,
Iñaki Zabaleta Urkiola, after commenting on several cultural events,
analyses the document signed by 140 men and women from the
world of culture («Silence is not shelter»). In reality, practically all
these new authors end their comments in some way or another by
referring to the current complex context of Basque politics. ◗ Va -
Unamuno and the Basque language
❦
The writer and member of the Basque Language Academy Xabier
Kintana analyses the relationship that Miguel de Unamuno maintained
with the Basque language throughout his life. This is a subject
that has brought about much discussion and even today remains
a source of controversy. For this reason, Kintana takes up
the declarations of the great philosopher and writer from Bilbao regarding
the Basque language, with the aim of understanding and
reinterpreting them in their true context. ◗ XABIER KINTANA
