In Britain, dyslexia is included in the legal definition of disability. Some dyslexic
people object to this, on the grounds that they are not impaired but simply
different. Others state that for them, it is indeed a disability; for example, the
common short-term memory and word-finding difficulties can be very
frustrating. The key point is that a double-sided approach is needed: society (in
which I include not only educational institutions and workplaces, but also public
places such as supermarkets) must be more accessible and inclusive, and also
dyslexic people must be pro-active. They need to be proactive both in a
personal sense, by working to develop strategies which help them to achieve
their goals, and in a political sense, by working to raise awareness of the need
for accessible practices.
