In Britain, dyslexia is included in the legal definition of disability. Some dyslexic<br />

people object to this, on the grounds that they are not impaired but simply<br />

different. Others state that for them, it is indeed a disability; for example, the<br />

common short-term memory and word-finding difficulties can be very<br />

frustrating. The key point is that a double-sided approach is needed: society (in<br />

which I include not only educational institutions and workplaces, but also public<br />

places such as supermarkets) must be more accessible and inclusive, and also<br />

dyslexic people must be pro-active. They need to be proactive both in a<br />

personal sense, by working to develop strategies which help them to achieve<br />

their goals, and in a political sense, by working to raise awareness of the need<br />

for accessible practices.<br />
