Successful dyslexic people also use human support. I have already referred to
Richard Branson’s personal assistant. Michael Heseltine, who was Deputy Prime
Minister to Margaret Thatcher, is dyslexic. He never read long ministerial
documents, but asked his staff to tell him the key points. But however good
human support can be, it is more dignified for dyslexic people to be
independent. A significant way in which they can achieve this is by using
assistive technology, in combination with assertiveness. For example, they may
tell colleagues: “I prefer to receive information by listening, so please send me
voicemail rather than email”. Or “I prefer to make a sound recording of a
meeting, rather than writing notes, so I am going to use this digital voice
recorder”.
Such assertiveness can come from what Gerber et al call ‘reframing’ the
concept of dyslexia. They define this as a set of decisions relating to
reinterpreting the learning disability experience in a more productive and
positive manner. It clearly allows for one to identify strengths (Gerber et al
1996:98)
