I would add ‘global thinkers’ to that. Take Richard Branson, the English
entrepreneur I mentioned earlier. His business empire is incredibly complex,
but he has a grip on it; he can see its overall structure. What he cannot do is to
remember the name of the person he met that morning; for that, he employs a
personal assistant who is always at his side. A couple of years ago, there was a
TV program in England about young millionaires. Several of them were dyslexic.
A recent BBC online article estimates that 40% of millionaires are dyslexic. In
some cases, the way they had been treated at school had engendered fierce
ambition to prove themselves; what they had in common was an ability to think
in innovative ways. In 2002, ‘Fortune’ magazine in the USA published an article
entitled ‘Overcoming Dyslexia’. It featured four highly successful men, all of
whom had struggled at school because of dyslexia. The author (Betsy Morris)
quoted Professor Sally Shaywitz of Yale University: Dyslexics are overrepresented
in the top ranks of people who are unusually insightful, who bring
a new perspective.
