A world-class industrial technology group
La storia
La “Società Anonima Cooperativa Meccanici
Imola” nasce nel 1919 su iniziativa
di 9 meccanici e fabbri. Nonostante
le violenze e le intimidazioni
subite dai soci ad opera della dittatura,
negli anni Trenta la Cooperativa
produce la prima macchina con il proprio
marchio: un macchinario per la
pulitura delle arance. Dopo la seconda
guerra mondiale, Sacmi diventa protagonista
della ricostruzione del Paese
producendo i primi macchinari per le
aziende ceramiche del distretto di
Sassuolo e della Romagna: il comparto
nel quale è oggi punto di riferimento
mondiale. Contemporaneamente,
inizia a realizzare macchine per la produzione
di tappi metallici a corona.
Dagli anni ‘50 in poi, il marchio Sacmi
supera i confini nazionali, prima grazie
alle esportazioni, poi con un progressivo
processo di internazionalizzazione
che conduce alla nascita di società
controllate e collegate. Al successo
History
The Società Anonima Cooperativa
Meccanici Imola was founded in 1919
on the initiative of nine mechanics and
blacksmiths. During the 1930’s,
despite intimidation from the fascist
regime, the Cooperative produced the
first machine to carry the Sacmi brand
name: a machine designed to clean
oranges. In the post-war years Sacmi
made a significant contribution to the
reconstruction of the nation’s economy
by producing the first machines
for ceramic manufacturers in the districts
of Sassuolo and Romagna.
Today, Sacmi is the world’s leading
producer of such machines. At the
same time, the company also began
making machines for the manufacture
of metal crown caps.
In the 1950s Sacmi began exporting,
thus beginning a steady process of
internationalisation that would later
produce a network of controlled and
subsidiary companies. A key factor in
5
6
del Gruppo contribuisce la diversificazione
tecnologica, che consente a
Sacmi di assumere una posizione di
rilievo anche nell’impiantistica per il
beverage, il packaging, il food processing
e la plastica.
Nel 2004, in occasione dell’85° anniversario
della nascita della Cooperativa,
le tappe della storia Sacmi, che
coincidono con quelle della tecnologia
internazionale per i settori in cui opera,
sono state racchiuse nel Must di
Imola, il museo storico della tecnologia
Sacmi.
La strategia
imprenditoriale e
le divisioni di business
Innovazione e ricerca ad altissimo
livello, forte attenzione alla qualità di
prodotti e servizi, sensibilità alle esigenze
dei mercati mondiali, sinergie
tecnologiche e integrazioni operative,
sfruttate con flessibilità in ambiti differenti:
sono questi gli elementi che hanno
permesso al gruppo Sacmi di raggiungere
e mantenere la leadership
internazionale nell’impiantistica a favore
di settori chiave dell’economia mondiale.
Oggi, al fulcro storico dell’attività del
Gruppo - la progettazione di macchinari
e impianti per l’industria ceramica,
in cui resta sinonimo di leadership incontrastata
- Sacmi ha progressivamente
affiancato ulteriori business,
con un’efficiente struttura che raggruppa
aziende e tecnologie in divisioni:
- Ceramics
- Beverage & Packaging
- Food Processing & Inspection Systems
- Plastics
Ricerca e innovazione,
la materia prima Sacmi
L’innovazione e la conoscenza sono la
principale risorsa Sacmi sui mercati
internazionali che ne fanno il principale
riferimento tecnologico nei diversi
settori e mercati in cui opera. Ad esse
il Gruppo dedica forti investimenti sia
per la creazione di nuove tecnologie,
sia per l’evoluzione delle macchine di
serie. Nel 2004, il Gruppo ha destinato
alla R&S oltre 10 milioni di euro.
Il Centro Ricerche e Sviluppo di Imola,
attraverso laboratori chimico-fisici,
tecnologici, reparti sperimentali ed
impianti pilota, ed uno staff di 140
this success was technological diversification,
thanks to which Sacmi was
soon playing a major engineering role
in the beverage, packaging, food processing
and plastics industries.
In 2004, on the occasion of the
Cooperative’s 85th anniversary, Sacmi
inaugurated the Museum of Sacmi
Technology (MUST), which illustrates
every stage of the Sacmi story and the
corresponding developments in international
technology within the relevant
industries.
Industrial strategy
and business divisions
Outstanding innovation and in-depth
research, the utmost attentiveness to
product and service quality, sensitivity
to the needs of world markets, technological
synergy, organisational integration
and full flexibility: these, then,
are the factors that have allowed the
Sacmi Group to achieve and maintain
international plant engineering leadership
status in key sectors of the
world economy.
Over the years the core business of
designing and building machines and
complete plants for the ceramics
industry - an area in which Sacmi is
the undisputed world leader - has
been flanked by other businesses to
form an efficient organisation that unites
companies and technologies in the
following divisions:
- Ceramics
- Beverage & Packaging
- Food Processing & Inspection Systems
- Plastics
Sacmi’s raw materials:
research and innovation
Innovation and know-how constitute
Sacmi’s most important resources:
they have made Sacmi a solid reference
point for the industries and markets
in which it operates. To ensure
the creation of new technologies and
the evolution of existing product lines
the Group invests heavily in these two
factors. In 2004 alone the Group channelled
10 million more into R&D.
Thanks to chemical-physical and technological
laboratories, experimental
facilities, pilot plants and a staff of over
140 specialised researchers and technicians,
the Imola Research and
Development Center develops cutting-edge
ricercatori e tecnici, sviluppa e mette
al servizio del Gruppo Sacmi conoscenze
all’avanguardia nei settori della
tecnologia ceramica, del packaging e
dei sistemi di controllo di processo. Al
Centro, che occupa una superficie di
circa 9.600 metri quadrati, si affiancano
inoltre i laboratori tecnologici e i
centri di ricerca e sviluppo delle singole
aziende del Gruppo. La sola
Sacmi Imola detiene oggi oltre 830
brevetti attivi, di cui 53 PCT e 70 EP.
Il Global Network
Alla sede di Imola (Bologna), nel cuore
del più qualificato distretto europeo
della meccatronica, fanno oggi capo,
tramite la holding di partecipazioni
H.P.S. Spa, oltre 60 società in tutti i
continenti. Il Gruppo è presente in 23
paesi con stabilimenti, aziende di distribuzione
e di servizio; oltre l’80% del
fatturato di Sacmi Imola è stabilmente
legato all’export.
Il Gruppo Sacmi assicura in tutto il
mondo assistenza e servizi efficienti
grazie ad un Global Network: una rete
di oltre 20 società che, in qualsiasi
continente, offrono ai clienti un servizio
rapido, efficace, diretto.
A questa presenza, si affiancano importanti
strumenti di customer satisfaction
e servizi on line: dalla vendita
di ricambi on line all’accesso via internet
a manuali e documenti personalizzati,
fino alla teleassistenza e all’assistenza
telefonica in tempo reale.
La responsabilità sociale
d’impresa
Sacmi è divenuta un Gruppo industriale
di rilevanza mondiale anche
grazie ai valori di mutualità, cooperazione,
attenzione alla persona e al territorio
che fanno parte del suo patrimonio
storico. Elementi, questi, che
hanno saldato management, soci e
lavoratori in un modello imprenditoriale
unico, capace di generare e redistribuire
valore a favore dei partner, dei
clienti, dei fornitori, dei dipendenti.
Nel 2004, Sacmi ha voluto dare conto
della propria responsabilità sociale
presentando il primo Bilancio Sociale
della Cooperativa, riferito all’esercizio
precedente e costruito secondo i principi
contabili del GBS-Gruppo Bilancio
Sociale, del quale utilizza la struttura
tripartita in identità, valore aggiunto e
relazione sociale.
Secondo Sacmi responsabilità sociasignifica
“fare impresa” contribuendo alla
crescita della qualità della vita, della
persona e della società, caratterizzando
non solo la scelta dei nuovi business
e l’impegno nella ricerca, ma
anche l’attenzione alla qualità e alla
sicurezza del lavoro, un rapporto con il
cliente proficuo e collaborativo, la salvaguardia
dell’ambiente naturale e il
supporto solidaristico alla comunità.
In particolare sul versante della tutela
ambientale, Sacmi ha adottato un
sistema di gestione conforme alla normativa
ISO 14001, integrato al sistema
di gestione della qualità, VISION 2000
e della sicurezza OHSAS 18001 dei
lavoratori. Tra gli obiettivi al centro
della politica ambientale dell’azienda,
vi sono il corretto smaltimento e riciclaggio
dei rifiuti, il controllo delle
emissioni e la depurazione dell’acqua.
A sostegno della comunità, negli ultimi
tre anni Sacmi ha destinato circa 3
milioni di euro, suddivisi in attività sociali,
erogazioni liberali, contributi agli
enti di assistenza e per le manifestazioni
culturali.
aging and process control systems -
and places them at the disposal of the
Sacmi Group. The Center, which occupies
a surface area of around 9,600
square metres, also enjoys support
from technological laboratories and
R&D centres within the individual
Group companies. Sacmi Imola alone
has 830 active patents (of which 53
PCT and 70 EP).
The Global Network
Through the holding company H.P.S.
Spa, the head offices of Imola
(Bologna) - right in the European
heartland of mecatronics - now control
over 60 companies on every continent
on the planet. The Group has
production plants, dealerships and
service organisations in 23 countries;
over 80% of Sacmi Imola’s total sales
are exported.
The Sacmi Group provides efficient
worldwide assistance and service
thanks to a Global Network: this system,
involving over 20 companies,
offers customers fast, effective and
direct service all over the world. It is
complemented by other customer
care and internet services: on-line
care and internet services: on-line
parts ordering, internet access to
manuals and personalised documents
and real-time remote / telephone assistance.
Social responsibility
Sacmi has not become an industrial
Group of global magnitude on the
basis of technical prowess alone:
equally important have been the founding
values of solidarity, cooperation
and attentiveness to both the individual
and the community. These
aspects have brought together management,
partners and workers to form
a unique business model that generates
wealth and re-distributes it among
partners, customers, suppliers and
employees.
In 2004, Sacmi set out to illustrate its
social responsibilities in the Cooperative’s
first-ever Social Audit: this
document, which referred to 2003,
was drawn up in compliance with the
3-part accounting principles of GBS-
Gruppo Bilancio Sociale that sub-divide
the audit into corporate identity,
added value and company profile.
Social responsibility means “doing
business” while making a contribution
to the quality of life of both the individual
and society as a whole. It is an
approach that characterises the choice
of new business areas and research
commitments. It also focuses attention
on quality, workplace safety, the establishment
of mutually rewarding
customer relations and seeks to safeguard
the environment and promote
solidarity within the local community.
In particular, Sacmi has adopted an
environment quality system in compliance
with ISO 14001, which complements
the VISION 2000 quality management
system and OHSAS 18001
worker safety system. Company environmental
policy aims to ensure,
among other things, proper recycling
and disposal of waste, emissions control
and water purification.
Over the last three years Sacmi has
channelled some 3 million Euros into
community support projects; this
expenditure took the form of social
activities, donations, contributions to
social security organisations and the
promotion of cultural events.
Andamento dell’esercizio 2004
Progress report 2004
Anche nel 2004 la situazione dei mercati
mondiali è stata difficile, influenzata
dall’euro forte che ha reso poco
competitive le merci europee; fenomeno
che si è sommato ad una forte
crescita del costo delle materie prime,
soprattutto acciai e olio combustibile
facendo calare inevitabilmente la redditività
complessiva. Questo contesto
economico ha influenzato in modo differente
i risultati dei singoli business.
Tuttavia, il Gruppo - anche grazie alla
propria diversificazione produttiva e
internazionalizzazione commerciale -
ha saputo sfruttare le opportunità che
si sono presentate nei diversi settori,
aumentando significativamente le proprie
quote di mercato.
Il bilancio 2004 del Gruppo Sacmi si è
chiuso con un fatturato di 1.063 milioni
di euro, in crescita del 23,3% rispetto
al 2003 e un utile netto di pertinenza
del Gruppo di 28,8 milioni di euro,
pari al 2,7% dei ricavi delle vendite e
As in the previous year, the situation
on world markets was, in 2004, rather
difficult. This was largely because of
the combined effects of a strong Euro,
which has made European goods less
competitive, and spiralling growth of
the price of raw materials, especially
steel and fuel oils, inevitably reducing
overall profitability. Sacmi’s individual
businesses have felt the effects of this
situation in different ways. Nevertheless
the company succeeded - thanks
also to product diversification and the
internationalisation of sales - in
making the most of the opportunities
that arose within the various industries
and increased its market shares significantly.
The Sacmi Group balance sheet 2004
closed with a total turnover of 1,063
million Euros, 23.3% higher than in
2003, and net Group profits of 28.8
è la prova concreta dell’azione del
Gruppo e della sua accresciuta competitività
in una situazione di mercato
La quota di fatturato del Gruppo destinata
all’export, pur in presenza di una
situazione valutaria non favorevole, è
cresciuta rispetto all’anno precedente
dall’80 all’86%.
vices. Consistent growth of results,
more than double compared to the
previous year (+139%), provide concrete
proof of Group performance and
competitiveness despite a generally
negative situation on the markets.
Consolidated Group results for the last
few years also highlight the constant
growth of shareholder’s equity, demonstrating
that Sacmi’s customers
can continue to rely on reliabiliy and
financial solidity.
The total value of production also rose
significantly to touch 1,153 million
17
Euros, an effective increase of 31.9%.
Ebitda touched 91 million Euros, Ebit
58 million Euros.
Despite unfavourable exchange rates,
the proportion of sales accounted for
by exports still grew with respect to
the preceding year, from 80% to 86%.
Throughout 2004 Sacmi Imola continued
the operational and strategic
reorganisation that, over the last three
years, has raised the number of employees
by 6.7% and increased overall
sales volumes by 45%.
Per quanto riguarda il Gruppo, invece,
l’incremento del personale è stato più
consistente spinto anche dall’ingresso
nel perimetro di consolidamento nel
corso del 2004 di due aziende tedesche
(Laeis GmbH e Riedhammer
le proprie attività mirate all’educazione,
all’assistenza e alla solidarietà.
With regard to the Group, instead, the
entry of two German companies
(Laeis GmbH and Riedhammer
GmbH) into the Ceramics division
contributed to further growth of the
workforce; there are now 3,463
employees as opposed to the 3,181 at
the end of 2003.
Good economic performance was
accompanied by product, process and
service innovation: in all Business
Areas this has involved an increase in
both investment and research and
development.
Total internal and external R&D costs
in 2004 amounted to 6.7 million Euros
for Sacmi Imola alone, while at Group
level the figure was higher than 10
million Euros.
Global investment, which reached 69
million Euros in 2004, confirms the
trend of massive financial commitment
to the growth and reorganization of
the Group.
With the coming into force of new
company laws that also affect cooperatives,
Sacmi made changes to its
company charter, approved at the end
of the year. It also continued its commitment
to effective pension and
health coverage and support of a wide
range of education, aid and job training
projects.
Il settore e l’andamento
della divisione
Anche nell’esercizio 2004, come nel
2003, Sacmi ha ottenuto nel settore
ceramico risultati nettamente positivi,
europei. I mercati in maggiore
espansione sono Iran, Russia, Messico,
ma una buona crescita si è registrata
anche in Italia, grazie all’affermazione
di nuove tecnologie di processo
come Twin Press e Continua.
Quest’ultima, in particolare, ha concluso
positivamente la fase test per giungere
alla industrializzazione alla ceramica
Impronta Italgraniti, dove era
stata installata la prima linea nel 2003.
Il sistema Continua ha permesso la
Industry overview and
division performance
Despite a general slump in the sanitaryware
and tile industries, the year
2004 was, much like 2003, a positive
one for Sacmi. The increase in sales
was particularly marked in tile technology/machinery
and whiteware, areas
in which Sacmi managed to increase
market shares to the detriment of its
major European competitors. The
fastest-expanding markets were Iran,
Russia, Mexico, yet good growth rates
were also seen in Italy thanks to successful
new process technologies such
as Twin Press and Continua. The latter,
in fact, has now passed final testing
and is already employed at industrial
level at Impronta Italgraniti, where the
first line was installed in 2003.
The Continua system resulted in the
manufacture of “Almatech”, a new and
innovative high-grade product with
outstanding aesthetic and technical
qualities.
stata prodotta la prima pressa PHP
5000 appositamente studiata per la
coniatura, già venduta e realizzata in
settore ottimizzando consumi energetici
e funzionalità della macchina. E’ stata
acquisita una prima importantissima
commessa europea alla tedesca
Roeben, che ha visto la realizzazione d
un impianto chiavi in mano per tegole
con la capacità produttiva di 40 milioni
di tegole/anno in Polonia.
Il mercato mondiale dei sanitari ha
anch’esso confermato, nel corso dell’anno,
i trend iniziati nel 2003: da un
lato la crescita di iniziative imprenditoriali
in molti Paesi in via di sviluppo,
dall’altro l’intensificarsi degli investimenti
nelle più recenti tecnologie da
parte degli operatori già esistenti sul
mercato. Anche nel 2004 il Whiteware
Sacmi ha saputo essere protagonista
in entrambi i mercati: sia quindi nella
fornitura di impianti chiavi in mano, sia
come principale partner nelle tecnologie
come il colaggio in alta pressione,
gli impianti di smaltatura robotizzata
e gli impianti di cottura di ultima
generazione.
Al consolidato del Whiteware si aggiunge
il risultato di Riedhammer.
Quest’ultima, azienda tedesca specializzata
nella produzione di forni per
sanitari, stoviglieria, ceramici tecnici e
speciali e anodi di carbone, nel 2004 è
The internationalisation of the Ceramics
division was taken a step further in
2004 thanks to the Group’s expansion
in China: kiln production facilities at
Sacmi Foshan were improved and
enlarged to meet the needs of South-
East Asia and India, with output largely
being oriented towards the lower
end of those markets.
Moreover, on 1st January 2004 the
German company Laeis Bucher
Technology GmbH was formally incorporated
into the Sacmi Group, bringing
with it a wealth of refractory production
skills. As a result a new press
range has been designed and the
Sacmi Group has reinforced its position
in the European refractory
industry.
Over the course of the year the
Ceramics division channelled significant
resources into reinforcing its
standing in the aluminium cookware
pressing field. The first PHP 5000
press - specially designed for striking
- is already on sale and available in
two different versions in both Italy and
Brazil.
For the very first year Sacmi also
extended plant engineering activities
to traditional brickwork: building
bricks, roof tiles, hollow blocks etc.
Sacmi Forni designed and built tunnel
driers and kilns for this industry, optimising
both energy consumption and
machine performance. More significantly,
a very important first order was
placed by the German company
Roeben for a turnkey roof tile plant in
Poland with an annual output of 40
million pcs/year.
The world sanitaryware market also
followed trends established in 2003:
on one side many new businesses
appeared in developing countries and
on the other existing producers continued
to invest intensively in advanced
technology. In 2004 Sacmi Whiteware
successfully played a duel role as both
supplier of turnkey production plants
and a partner in technologies such as
high pressure casting, robotized glazing
systems and cutting-edge firing
systems.
This encouraging performance was
further boosted by results from
Riedhammer. In 2004 Sacmi acquired
a 90% share of this German company,
a specialist in the production of kilns
for sanitaryware, tableware, technical/special
ceramic and carbon anodes.
Riedhammer closed 2004 with
sales totalling 53 million Euros, thus
raising total Whiteware revenues to
approximately 120 million Euros.
divenuta al 90% di Sacmi. Riedhammer
ha chiuso il 2004 con un fatturato
di 53 milioni di euro, portando così a
circa 120 milioni di euro il fatturato
consolidato dell’area Whiteware.
Anche il mercato della stoviglieria,
dopo anni di arretramenti, ha mostrato
nel 2004 qualche timido segnale di
ripresa dovuto essenzialmente, anche
in questo caso, alla nascita di alcuni
nuovi impianti in Paesi in via di sviluppo.
L’area di business Whiteware si è
confermata attraverso la consociata tedesca
Sama assoluto leader di mercato,
beneficiando in misura netta di tali
segnali positivi.
A confermare la leadership mondiale
del Whiteware anche dal punto di
vista tecnico e tecnologico sono state
nel 2004 le nuove proposte lanciate
sul mercato dalle controllate: la Niv
con la nuova macchina ADM 080, piccola
e flessibile unità monostampo per
il colaggio in alta pressione di lavabi,
cassette e piatti doccia; la Gaiotto con
le nuove soluzioni ad elevatissima
automazione di manipolazione e finitura
robotizzata dei vari articoli sanitari;
In 2004, after years of stagnation, the
tableware market started showing
weak signs of recovery. Once again,
this was largely due to the establishment
of new production facilities in
developing nations. The Whiteware
division took full advantage of these
positive signs through its subsidiary
Germany company, Sama, the undisputed
leader in the tableware market.
Whiteware’s world leadership status
was also underlined from a technological
point of view in 2004, as demonstrated
by new machines designed
and developed by subsidiary companies:
Niv offered the new ADM 080, a
a small yet versatile single-mould unit
for the high-pressure casting of washbasins,
tanks and shower trays;
Gaiotto produced new high-automation
solutions for the robotized handling
and finishing of various sanitaryware
items while Sama put forward
new robotized finishing machines (to
complement isostatic presses) for the
finishing of irregularly-shaped or noncircular
items.
Il settore e l’andamento
della divisione
Nel 2004, il mercato mondiale delle
macchine ed impianti per il Beverage
& Packaging è stato contrassegnato
dalla contrazione della domanda; il caro
euro ha penalizzato le esportazioni
ed eroso la marginalità delle aziende
europee, e si è sommato alla difficile
competizione con i paesi a basso costo
di manodopera. In questo quadro
internazionale poco positivo, la divisione
Beverage & Packaging Sacmi ha
realizzato volumi per 137 milioni di
euro, in leggera flessione rispetto all’anno
precedente.
Industry overview and
division performance
In 2004 the world market for
Beverage & Packaging machines and
plants suffered a drop in demand.
European firms found that the strong
Euro penalised exports and eroded
profit margins: this situation was worsened
by stiff competition from countries
with ultra-low labour costs. Given
this less-than-reassuring international
picture, the Sacmi Beverage & Packaging
division nevertheless managed
to generate sales of around 137 million
Euros, slightly down on last year’s
figures.
A key aspect of 2004 was the significant
fall in sales of plastic and metal
cap production machinery (in which
Sacmi maintains undisputed world
leadership) to the Chinese market, a
result of the credit squeeze imposed
by Beijing. Nevertheless, the wane in
Chinese demand was offset by the
success of Sacmi products in other
prodotti Sacmi in altre aree del mondo
e la crescita complessiva del labelling.
Nel corso dell’anno, inoltre, la divisione
ha operato una forte politica di
espansione riorganizzando la struttura
commerciale, aprendo nuove sedi
nei mercati di riferimento più importanti.
Sono dunque nate Sacmi USA
Beverage; Sacmi West Europe con
sede nei pressi di Tolone (Francia);
Sacmi Middle East con sede a Dubai.
Le nuove società seguono la vendita
delle macchine per le chiusure in
metallo e plastica, per le preforme in
pet, per il riempimento, per l’etichettaggio
e per il confezionamento, garantendo
l’assistenza tecnica Sacmi e
riempimento in asettico, macchine
per capsule in plastica ad altissima
velocità, tecnologie di etichettaggio
tra le più innovative e sofisticate e
nuovi processi per produrre preforme
e relativi sistemi di visione sono le
applicazioni principali sviluppate dal
Gruppo.
tecnologicamente molto convincenti,
sviluppati in sinergia tra il gruppo
Negri Bossi, produttore di presse ad
iniezione, e Sacmi Imola, responsabile
destinate all’imbottigliamento si
sono ridotti e i produttori tedeschi,
attraverso politiche commerciali molto
aggressive, hanno aumentato la propria
quota di mercato affermandosi
come fornitori globali di linee complete.
In questo scenario, Sacmi Filling -
controllata con sede a Parma - ha
puntato, nel corso dell’anno, a completare
la gamma delle nuove macchine
destinate alle acque piatte, alle
bevande gassate e sensibili ed alle
tecnologie per il riempimento in aset-
areas of the world and the excellent
overall performance of labelling.
Moreover, over the course of the year,
the division implemented a policy of
expansion and reorganised its sales
structure, opening new branches on
key reference markets. Hence 2004
saw the establishment of Sacmi USA
Beverage, Sacmi West Europe with
offices in Tolone (France) and Sacmi
Middle East, based in Dubai.
These new companies manage the
sale of machines for metal and plastic
caps, PET pre-forms, filling, labelling
and packaging. They ensure that
customers are provided with Sacmi
technical assistance and readily available
spare parts.
Sacmi knows that it can only regain
ground by focussing on technological
innovation. Consequently, 2004 proved
to be another year characterised
by intense R&D in all Beverage &
Packaging areas, the focus being on
aseptic filling, very high speed machines
for plastic caps, highly innovative
and sophisticated labelling technology,
new pre-form production processes
and relative vision systems.
Over the year the division built its first
lines for the production of PET preforms.
Developed together with the
Negri Bossi group (producers of
injection presses) and Sacmi Imola
(die makers), they produced extremely
encouraging results.
In the closures industry efforts were
made to improve the degree of technological
competitiveness. This led to
the introduction of the new TVC031, a
combi machine for the folding and slitting
of anti-tamper bands. At K2004 -
the number one trade fair for the plastics
industry - Sacmi presented the
CCM 003, a compression press for
plastic cap producers; essentially a
more evolved version of previous 32
cavity machines, it is, in fact, the
fastest machine on the market (in
terms of moulding time/cycle) and
also the most economically advantageous.
World bottling machine output slumped
in 2004; German manufacturers
implemented aggressive sales policies
implemented aggressive sales policies
that succeeded in augmenting their
market share and reinforcing their role
as suppliers of complete lines. Given
this scenario, Sacmi Filling - a subsidiary
based in Parma - focussed on
completing its range of still mineral
water, fizzy drink and juice bottling
machines and developing aseptic filling
technology. These new projects
25

tico.
negli ultimi 3 anni, in circa 200 aziende
di tutto il mondo.
Nel packaging, Inpak Imola si è trasformata
in Sacmi Packaging, nuova
società divenuta il fulcro delle attività
Sacmi nel mercato delle macchine per
il confezionamento. Il volume delle vendite
nel 2004 è più che raddoppiato
rispetto all’anno precedente, grazie
alla rinnovata gamma di macchine formatrici,
incartonatrici e palettizatori, e
ad un’efficace politica di vendita su
nuovi mercati come Repubblica Ceca,
Spagna, Turchia, Centro e Sud America,
nonchè all’acquisto del ramo d’azienda
di Carle & Montanari preposto
alla produzione di macchine confezionatrici
per cioccolato e caramelle.
Le incartatrici, prevalentemente impiegate
dal settore dolciario, hanno registrato
risultati in netta crescita rispetto
al 2003 grazie soprattutto al completamento
di un’importante commessa
per una società leader italiana nella
produzione e confezionamento di pro-
dotti alimentari. Inoltre un impianto con
sette linee per la confezione automatica
in scatole in banda stagnata è stato
fornito allo stabilimento di Codigoro di
Conserve Italia, il leader europeo per la
produzione di prodotti ortofrutticoli conservati
che ha formalizzato nel 2004
l’acquisto della Cirio De Rica.
Infine nel settore delle macchine form
-fill-seal, prodotte dalla Benco Pack, il
giro d’affari risulta allineato ai valori
dell’anno precedente. Buone prospettive
Donalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken e
Pizza Hut - vengono prodotte con tecnologie
made in Sacmi.
aim to allow the Group to compete on
an even footing with major international
plant builders. Towards the end of
2004, at the Chicago-held PMMI fair
and the Salon de l’Emballage in Paris,
Sacmi Filling aroused keen interest
within the industry by presenting its
new Volo Mas and Solo Mas filling
units.
On the labelling scene 2004 saw SCM
merge with Sacmi Labelling to form a
single entity capable of supplying
machines for every stage of the labelling
process, whatever the container
type. At the industry’s key trade fairs,
held in Chicago and Paris, Sacmi
Labelling presented the latest version
of Opera, the ultra-fast roll-fed singlestation
labeller that, over the last three
years, has been installed in some 200
companies all over the world.
In the packaging field Inpak Imola is
now Sacmi Packaging, a new company
that is the hub of Sacmi’s packaging
machine operations. Thanks to a
renewed range of forming, cartoning
and palletizing machines and effective
sales policies in new markets such as
the Czech Republic, Spain, Turkey and
Central-South America 2004 saw
sales more than double with respect
to the previous year.
This expansion was also the result of
the purchase of a branch of Carle &
Montanari that produces chocolate
and sweet packaging machines.
Wrapping machines, mostly used in
the confectionary industry, enjoyed
significantly more success than in
2003, mainly thanks to the completion
of an order for a leading Italian food
producer-packager. A production plant
with seven automatic canning lines
was supplied to the Codigoro facility
belonging to Conserve Italia, Europe’s
leading producer of preserved fruit and
vegetable products which, in 2004,
took over Cirio De Rica.
The market for the form-fill-seal
machines made by Benco Pack generated
results similar to those achieved
in 2003. Thanks to a new aseptic
range with shrink-wrap sleeve labelling
that is arousing considerable interest
among the big international cheese
producers, expectations for 2005
are running high.
Over the course of 2004 Benco Pack
also became the official filling machine
supplier to Gyma-Teampack, the French
company that produces ketchup,
mayonnaise and sauce sachets for
some of the world’s most famous fast
food and catering chains such as
McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken
and Pizza Hut.
fino allo stoccaggio finale.
Gram Equipment ha inoltre studiato
diverse soluzioni innovative assieme ai
produttori di gelato industriale per creare
prodotti nuovi e accattivanti attraverso
l’utilizzo di riempitici speciali e
l’inserimento nel gelato di ingredienti
originali e invitanti.
interna, destinata a produrre i
primi risultati nel corso dell’esercizio
2005.
Fondata nel 1907, Carle & Montanari è
un punto di riferimento internazionale
nelle macchine per la lavorazione e la
confezione del cioccolato. L’anno si è
chiuso con una buona performance
grazie soprattutto alla commercializzazione
di macchine per la confezione e
l’incartamento del cioccolato e all’andamento
dell’export.
provenienti dai mercati dell’Estremo
Oriente.
pomodoro, sta ulteriormente diversificando
la propria offerta, sviluppando
tecnologie delle linee di trasformazione
della frutta tropicale - destinate
soprattutto ai mercati del Sud Africa e
Tampa-based American branch, which
manages the North American market.
During 2004 Gram perfected a line
with an astounding hourly output rate
- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - of
38 thousand pieces: this is designed
to produce on-stick ice creams and
biscuit ice-creams such as Magnum
(Unilever), Mega (Nestlè) and Maxi-
Bon (Nestlè). The production lines
made by this world-leading Danish
firm are installed in numerous European
factories and are able to process
the product from forming to final storage.
Working together with industrial
ice-cream manufacturers, Gram Equipment
has also come up with several
other innovative solutions that provide
new, exciting products via the use of
special fillers and the insertion of original,
inviting ingredients in the icecream.
With total sales at 37 million Euros, the
business generated by chocolate
machines fell just a little short of
expectations, largely because of flagging
demand and a protracted period
of internal reorganisation, expected to
start producing results during 2005.
Founded in 1907, Carle & Monta-nari
plays a key role in the international
chocolate-making and wrapping
machine industry. The year closed on
a high note largely thanks to the success
of its chocolate wrapping and
packaging machines and good performance
on the export front. For Carle &
Montanari the year 2004 was characterised
by a reinforced standing on
traditional markets such as Italy and
USA and new, fast-expanding markets
such as Iran and Russia.
Focussing on technological and product
innovation, the company has
developed a new generation of mobile-mould
modelling systems that introduce
original maintenance and sanitisation
concepts, new solutions that
enhance quality and cut running costs
on existing machinery and a new
range of wrapping machines.
Good division performance was largely
attributable to machines and feed
systems for fruit and vegetable processing
plants; these generated sales
volumes of over 22 million Euros,
mostly due to a sharp rise in orders
from the Far East.
In 2004 Fbr-Elpo, a specialist in
systems for the fruit and vegetable
canning industry, strengthened its
market standing and achieved total
sales of 21.7 million Euros (+48% in
two years). Exports generated 90% of
company revenues, with China playing
an especially important role (this
country alone accounted for 55% of
the total).
Fbr-Elpo’s core business is the development
and production of high capacity
aseptic systems, mostly for milk
and cream. The company, also a
world-leading manufacturer of tomato
processing systems, aims to diversify
further by developing tropical fruit
processing technology (mainly for the
South African and Egyptian markets);
it is also developing an innovative
aseptic filler that uses welded closures
as opposed to caps.
Another key component of the division
is Raytec Vision, a producer of
“industrial process controllers” that,
dell’Egitto - e allo sviluppo di una
riempitrice asettica innovativa che utilizza
chiusure con saldatura al posto
del tappo.
Del perimetro della divisione fa parte
anche Raytec Vision, società che
opera nei “controllori di processo”
industriali. Le applicazioni Raytec
stanno riscuotendo un notevole interesse
da parte delle aziende alimentari,
in forza di soluzioni tecnologiche
estremamente innovative come le “selezionatrici
ottiche ed a raggi x”, applicate
sia nella selezione delle materie
prime che in fase di trasformazione.
Nel 2004 ha installato negli Stati Uniti
la sua prima ispezionatrice per prodotti
liquidi “in tubo”. Pur essendo uno
start-up, Raytec ha raggiunto, nell’ultimo
in particolare i “nasi elettronici” sviluppati
in cabina. Sono inoltre state sviluppate
interessanti applicazioni anche
nel campo della salute umana in
collaborazione con un’università di
New York.
E’ proseguito infine lo sviluppo di
sistemi di visione per il controllo delle
caratteristiche esterne dei prodotti,
destinati soprattutto all’industria della
cioccolata, della selezione della frutta
e negli impianti di imbottigliamento, e
degli “analizzatori NIR” per il controllo
delle caratteristiche interne dei prodotti
ortofrutticoli.
by offering extremely innovative hightech
optical and X-ray sorters for the
quality control of raw materials and
semi-finished items, aroused considerable
interest within the food industry.
The first in-pipe control system for
liquid food products was installed in
the USA in 2004.
Despite being at the start-up stage,
2004 saw Raytec generate revenues
of 5.4 million Euros.
In 2004 the Sacmi Group perfected a
number of high-tech control and
inspection systems designed to help
the food industry achieve the key
goals of product quality, safety and
traceability. These systems enjoyed a
warm welcome on both European and
global markets. Applied in Food
Processing and a growing number of
other fields, this technology includes
the “electronic noses” that Sacmi has
developed over the last few years. In
2004 this ground-breaking technology
attracted interest from major players
not only in the food industry but
also in the automobile and aeronautical
sectors: a joint project for the
monitoring of car interiors was set up
with FIAT and a similar project for air
quality control inside airliners was carried
out with the European Airbus
Consortium. Moreover, interesting
applications in the health field were
developed in collaboration with a university
in New York.
Development of vision systems for the
control of product exteriors continued,
mostly being aimed at the chocolate,
fruit sorting and bottling industries.
NIR systems for the control of the
internal characteristics of fruit and
vegetables were also upgraded.
Plastics division
Il settore e l’andamento
della divisione
Il settore delle macchine per la produzione
di manufatti in plastica sta attraversando
da alcuni anni una situazione
di difficoltà con volumi in costante
diminuzione. La delocalizzazione produttiva
dei particolari in plastica -
soprattutto nelle aree a basso costo
della manodopera - sta determinando
un forte mutamento degli scenari di
mercato per lo spostamento degli stabilimenti
produttivi nelle aree dell’Est
in Cina.
Questa evoluzione, che si somma al
dollaro debole, sta rapidamente eliminando
gli impiantisti più piccoli e
meno competitivi, a favore di chi -
come Sacmi - sta invece presidiando
con forza il mercato. Nel corso del
2004, le aziende del Gruppo Sacmi
sono dunque riuscite ad aumentare
volumi e quote di mercato, in contro-
Industry overview and
division performance
With constantly diminishing volumes,
there were no signs of any let-up in
the slump that has been afflicting
makers of plastic manufacturing machines
for some years now. Re-location of
plastic producers to other countries
where labour costs are much lower is
causing sweeping change within the
market, with factories being moved to
Eastern Europe and a new network of
sub-suppliers appearing in the Far
East, mostly in China.
These changes, together with the
effects of a weak dollar, are rapidly eliminating
smaller, less competitive
firms to the benefit of those who, like
Sacmi, are able to exert a certain
influence on the market. Over 2004,
then, companies in the Sacmi Group
managed to run against the trend by
increasing both volumes and market
shares, thus confirming the positive
outlook for the division.
tendenza rispetto al settore, confermando
le buone prospettive della Divisione.
Il 2004 ha visto una crescente integrazione
tra le controllate del gruppo
Negri Bossi, azienda leader in Italia
Come previsto, dopo
due anni dedicati ad un’intensa attività
di ristrutturazione del gruppo, i dati
2004 evidenziano la crescita dei ricavi,
ottenuta nonostante la difficile situazione
di mercato, ed un pieno ritorno
alla redditività.
Nel 2004 il Gruppo, nella divisione
Plastic, ha sviluppato una serie di nuovi
prodotti tra cui la serie Bi-Power,
macchine ad iniezione a due piani di
alto tonnellaggio dalle 1.800 tonnellate
alle 6.000 tonnellate. Una versione
a massimo tonnellaggio è già in produzione
e verrà consegnata nel giugno
2005 a un importante cliente italiano.
Sempre nel 2004 sono stati realizzati i
primi impianti per la produzione delle
pre-forme con stampi a multicavità
prodotti dalla Sacmi di Imola, a conferma
del grado di integrazione raggiunto
dal Gruppo. Infine la tradizionale
gamma delle macchine idrauliche
ed elettriche è stata migliorata nelle
performance e nella gamma per assecondare
la crescente domanda di
impianti ad alta tecnologia. I mercati in
prospettiva più interessanti sono: i
paesi dell’Est Europeo, la Russia,
l’India e il Nord America.
L’obiettivo di Negri Bossi è mantenere
la propria posizione di leadership in
Italia, di consolidare la buona quota di
mercato in Europa e di espandere l’attività
a livello mondiale, in particolare
in aree geografiche in forte crescita
Uniti. In collaborazione con la società
del Gruppo Sacmi, Gaiotto Automation,
nel 2004 la società ha presentato
nuove isole automatizzate, nelle quali
la pressa ad iniezione viene assistita
da robot antropomorfi, proponendosi
come referente esperto di trasformazione
integrata.
The year 2004 was also characterised
by growing integration between the
subsidiaries of the Negri Bossi group.
Italy’s leading designer and marketer
of plastic injection moulding machines
(quoted on the Star section of the
Italian Stock Exchange), the group
closed 2004 with sales of 117.8 million
Euros (+11.2% compared to 2003).
As expected, following two years of
intensive internal re-organisation, data
for 2004 showed increased revenues
despite the difficulties within the market,
and a full return to profitability.
Over 2004 the Plastics division carried
forward a number of new projects:
these include the Bi-Power series,
two-tier high tonnage injection machines
ranging from 1800 tons to 6000
tons. A higher-tonnage version has
already gone into production and will
be delivered to a key Italian customer
in June 2005.
Highlighting the high degree of integration
that now exists within the
Group, 2004 also saw completion of
the first pre-form production plants
with multi-cavity dies made by Sacmi
Imola. Finally, the performance of the
traditional electrical and hydraulic
machine range was improved and the
range itself was extended to meet the
growing demand for high-tech
systems. At present the most promising
markets appear to be Eastern
European nations, Russia, India and
North America.
Negri Bossi’s goal is to maintain its
leadership in Italy, reinforce an already
significant market share in Europe and
expand operations at global level,
especially in fast-growing markets
such as Russia, Turkey and the USA.
Working in collaboration with the
Sacmi Group, 2004 saw Gaiotto
Automation present new, automated
production islands with injection presses
and anthropomorphic robots as
part of its plans to become a key supplier
of integrated manufacturing solutions.
The year 2004 saw continued good
performance from Bm Biraghi, widely
esteemed for its ability to provide
customised systems and its commitment
to the development of evermore
specialised technology such as
the moulding of liquid silicon, two-
Nel 2004 sono continuate le buone
performance del marchio Bm Biraghi,
da sempre apprezzato nelle soluzioni
fortemente personalizzate e anche per
l’impegno nello studio di tecnologie di
trasformazione sempre più specialistiche
come lo stampaggio di silicone
liquido, di bicolore/bicomponente, di
materiali termoindurenti con tecnologie
tradizionali o transfer e di PET per
la produzione di preforme. La società
ha puntato, inoltre nel 2004, al settore
della produzione di elettrodomestici,
realizzando numerose isole di lavoro
completamente automatizzate.
Bm Braghi ha raggiunto un volume
d’affari di poco superiore ai 20 milioni
di euro, crescendo del 30%; Oima si è
invece attestata su un fatturato di 15
milioni di euro (+ 40% rispetto all’anno
precedente).
company also focussed on meeting
the needs of electrical appliance
manufacturers, producing numerous
fully automated work islands.
Bm Braghi achieved sales of just over
20 million Euros, up 30% on the previous
year; Oima, instead, saw revenues
jump to 15 million Euros (+ 40%
Italiansped, la società del Gruppo
Sacmi attiva nei servizi di spedizione
internazionale e nella logistica ha realizzato
nel 2004 un fatturato di circa 37
milioni di euro, con un incremento del
26,8% rispetto all’anno precedente.
Con 59 addetti ed una rete di quattro
sedi in Italia - Imola, Milano, Genova e
esterne.
L’incremento di fatturato nel 2004 è
stato in gran parte legato alla espansione
e alla diversificazione dei servizi
small and medium-size companies) so
that they now account for 21% of the
Engineering department the range of
services is now a comprehensive one.
New business areas being developed
by Protesa - which will move to new,
extended premises in 2006 - include
machine tool maintenance, installation
and control services.
Italiansped, the international Sacmi
Group shipping and logistics company,
generated revenues of around
37 million Euros in 2004, 26.8% more
than in 2003. With 59 employees and
a network of four Italian branches
(Imola, Milan, Genoa and Bologna)
and four overseas offices, more than
44% of Italiansped’s business was
generated by services provided to the
parent company, Sacmi Imola. About
12% was accounted for by services to
other Group companies and 43% by
business with external companies.
The increased revenue of 2004 was
largely achieved by expanding and
diversifying services offered: these
now include maritime transport, logistics,
air freight, land freight and other
offerti, che oggi comprendono spedizioni
marittime, logistica, spedizioni
aeree, altre spedizioni terrestri e servizi
di trasporto a favore dei settori meccanico,
ceramico, della metalmeccanica,
dei macchinari e, dal 2004, anche
dei prodotti di largo consumo. Nel
corso dell’anno, la società ha consolidato
un importante contratto per la
gestione della logistica di Nike Italy.
Logistica e trasporto aereo rappresentano
le principali aeree di sviluppo del
business della società.
Prototipo, costituita nel ‘96, ha progressivamente
e costantemente incrementato
la sua presenza sul mercato
Ict. Il fatturato della società, nata per
erogare consulenza informatica, nel
2004 è stato pari a 11,6 milioni di
euro, sostanzialmente in linea con il
risultato dell’anno precedente. I ricavi,
realizzati per il 48% dall’attività intragruppo
e per il 52% da attività svolte a
favore di altre aziende, sono derivati
per il 70% da servizi.
Nel 2004 il numero dei dipendenti di
Prototipo ha raggiunto le 65 unità, il
capitale sociale i 500.000 euro, il patrimonio
netto 1 milione di euro. Nello
stesso periodo, per dare risposta alle
esigenze del mercato e migliorare
ulteriormente il livello di servizio offerto
alla clientela, ha raddoppiato gli
investimenti per i servizi di Hosting
(Outsourcing) e nella formazione.
Anche nel 2004 è proseguita inoltre
una attenta politica di diversificazione
delle attività anche potenziando la ricerca
e sviluppo. Oltre a fornire beni e
servizi alle società del Gruppo Sacmi,
Prototipo ha incrementato in maniera
rilevante il numero dei propri clienti
anche in settori diversi quali la pubblica
amministrazione, la sanità, la moda,
i servizi e la ristorazione.
transport services for the mechanics,
ceramics, engineering and machinery
industries and - as of 2004 - basic
commodities. During the year the
company also strengthened its logistics
business with Nike Italy. The
most promising areas for future development
are logistics and air freight.
Prototipo, established in 1996 to provide
consultation services, steadily
extended its activities on the IT market.
In 2004 revenues totalled 11.6
million Euros, essentially the same as
in the previous year. Income, 48% of
which is generated by intra-Group
activities and 52% by business with
other companies, mostly comes from
services (70%).
In 2004 the number of Prototipo
employees rose to 65, corporate capital
to 500,000 Euros and net worth to
1 million Euros. Over the same period
investment in Hosting (Outsourcing)
and training was doubled to meet
market needs and enhance the level
of customer service.
Throughout 2004 the company augmented
research and development
efforts as part of an ongoing diversification
policy. In addition to supplying
goods and services to the Sacmi
Group, Prototipo also extended its
customer portfolio to cover areas such
as public administration, health, fashion,
services and catering.
