Sandys, the Scout Leader and a group of
Scouts, Maggio with - Giugno banners, 2009 presented a 100th Centenary of Scouting Coin, in order to
encourage the formation of a Scout troop
in San Michele. The compere, Mike Connell
of Thurstable School, made the closing
address which was followed by refreshments
provided by local firms and
individuals. At the same time there was
a continuous slide show of Tiptree old
and new, by David Turner, and a selection
of English and Italian folk and pop
music was played. The delegation had the
chance
to talk to many of those present at the
ceremony, who represented many of the
churches, schools and organisations in
Tiptree.
On Thursday the delegation were given
a tour of Colchester town hall and a reception
with the Mayor of Colchester, Mrs
Margaret Fairley-Crowe. Being the oldest
recorded town in Great Britain, Colchester
has a rich regalia and many treasures. We
then departed for Mersea Island, which is
connected to the mainland by a road, The
Strood, which is submerged for a couple
of hours a few times a month when there
is a very high tide. We visited a private
garden, which is open to the public a few
times a year for charity and Valerie James,
the owner who teaches music, played the
piano and sang for us. We then went to the
beach and saw some kite-surfers in action
and then ate fish and chips. The Mayor of
West Mersea took us on a history walk in
the afternoon and we saw fresh fish being
landed on the pier.
I already know many Italians who live
and work around Colchester. Many arrived
as early as the 1950’s but there are
also several Italian shipping agents operating
at the nearby ports of Harwich/
Parkeston Quay and Felixstowe who also
live in the area. As a result of organising
the twinning ceremony, I have met a few
more settled Italians, including Carmelina
Piazza a Sicilian who works in sales for
Wilkin & Sons.
I have a brown turkey fig in my garden,
but I was surprised to find figs growing in
many of the locations we visited. Our figs
ripen from late August and can be sweet
and tasty. Unfortunately the English birds
have also discovered that figs are good to
eat! The yield from our trees can be very
variable. Perhaps we could display some
Tiptree figs at your festival!

Cari Amici,
il tempo era molto caldo per aprile a
Tiptree, le previsioni parlavano di pioggia
durante il periodo del gemellaggio (dal 27
al 30 aprile), ma a parte la pioggia il giorno
dell’arrivo della delegazione, per il resto
c’è stato il sole e le temperature massime si
aggiravano sui 20° C. Grazie al bel tempo
siamo riusciti a completare con successo il
nostro programma delle visite. Nella tarda
primavera e all’inizio dell’estate è un buon
periodo per visitare l’Inghilterra poiché
ovunque è straordinariamente verde, un
ambiente ottimale per le piante e la fioritura
della frutta.
Dopo l’arrivo della delegazione a Londra
Stansted, siamo andati a Perrywood
Nurseries “Tutto per il giardino” a Tiptree
per prendere una tazza di tè e una fetta di
torta. Un’occasione per la delegazione per
vedere l’amore che gli Inglesi hanno per i
giardini. Poi abbiamo visitato la Chiesa di
St. Luke (San Luca), Chiesa di Inghilterra,
a Tiptree. La chiesa ha delle belle vetrate
istoriate, un soffitto a botte che conclude
in una forma come una mezza cupola sopra
l’altare. Il soffitto è bianco con alcuni
dipinti a piccoli motivi. La decorazione in
mattoni è mostrata al buon effetto sopra le
vetrate e le arcate. I cuscini da inginocchiatoio,
realizzati dai membri della parrocchia,
sono ricamati, ognuno con un disegno diverso.
Dopo abbiamo fatto una passeggiata
lungo la strada principale, Church Road,
per vedere la gamma dei negozi. Tiptree è
un distretto rurale nel comune di Colchester
(una Città di dimensioni pari a Brindisi) e
nella contea dell’Essex. Una contea inglese
è come una provincia italiana ma probabilmente
ha più importanza poiché ha una
funzione geografica/statistica. L’Essex è
una delle contee più grandi in Inghilterra.
Il martedì abbiamo visitato Carter’s Vineyard
(il Vigneto) a Nord di Colchester.
Ha solo due ettari in produzione, ma è posto
in un’area più grande di una riserva naturale.
Molte varietà di uve rosse e bianche
sono coltivate per produrre piccole quantità
di vini rossi, bianchi e rosé e lo champagne.
La località non ha l’elettricità o il gas
dalla rete nazionale e dipende dai pannelli
solari, dalla turbina a vento e in mancanza
d’altro un generatore. I canneti sono utilizzati
per pulire l’acqua di scolo. Abbiamo
