BERNHARD HÄRING’S THE LAW OF CHRIST.
REASSESSING ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE RENEWAL
OF MORAL THEOLOGY IN ITS ERA
This article sets out to reassess the contribution of B. Häring’s
masterpiece just over 50 years after its publication. The scope of the
reassessment is limited to placing it within the context of the decade
of its publication. After an Introduction, the author gives his view
of the immediate context of moral theology at the time of the publication
of The Law of Christ. The broad lines of the contribution of
the work are then outlined and a framework of interpretation is
offered. In the author’s view it is the religious nature of morality
and the ‘worship-structure’ of Häring’s thought that are decisive.
The key elements of the internal structure of the work are then
analysed: freedom, conscience and responsibility. A reflection on the
contribution of The Law of Christ in its day and its enduring significance
concludes the article.
Este artículo intenta examinar la contribución de la obra de
Bernhard Häring cuando se cumplen 50 años de su publicación. El
objetivo se limita a colocar el libro -La Ley de Cristo- en la década de
la publicación. Después de la Introducción, el autor ofrece la visión
del contexto inmediato de la Teología Moral al momento de su publicación.
Las grandes líneas del libro quedan enmarcadas dentro de la
interpretación propuesta. En la opinión del autor cuenta mucho la
naturaleza religiosa de la moral y la orientación ‘litúrgica’ del pensamiento
de Häring. Elementos a destacar dentro de la estructura de la
obra son: la libertad, la conciencia y la responsabilidad. Se concluye el
artículo con una reflexión sobre la contribución de La Ley de Cristo
en su tiempo y el significado que aún tiene.
