Bad, worse,
and the
tourist tax

After surviving five days of
Sanremo Festival (300,000 euros
was the fee Celentano was paid
by RAI) we find ourselves caught
between farcical and ridiculous,
with the news that the RAI licence
fee will have to be paid also
for office computers. Hopefully
good sense will prevail; I am not
planning to pay.
The Monti government is doubtlessly
being assisted by Italian
good luck; born out of emergency,
during its few months of activity
it has gone through a significant
number of parallel events which
have shifted the public’s attention
away from its action, or at
least have relieved its pressure.
By order of occurrence:
The economic crisis in Greece
caused the yield spread between
the German bunds and the Italian
10-year treasury bonds to
shoot up, increasing the cost of
refinancing debt.
The Chamber of Deputies, by
secret ballot, rejected an arrest
warrant for Member of Parliament
Nicola Cosentino, which,
if approved, would have caused
tension between the political parties,
with repercussions for the
government.
The Constitutional Court rejected
the referendums on the
electoral system, which also had
the potential to create friction.
Undersecretary Carlo Malinconico,
in charge of Publishing,
who had stayed at Il Pellicano
Hotel (fabulous!) and whose bill
had been footed by the entrepreneur
Francesco Piscicelli, was
invited by President Monti to
resign from office, thus formally
sending a signal of consistency
(but who had appointed him?).
Downgrading of the Italian
credit rating by the agencies
Standard & Poor’s and Fitch.
Costa Concordia’s tragic accident
off the shore of the Island
of Giglio.
Climatic conditions with Siberian
temperatures and snowfalls
worthy of recording in the
annals.
Also Moody’s (for good measure)
downgraded our debt.
A deterioration of the Hellenic
crisis, with violent episodes and
the setting of fires.
Italy formally entered recession
with a GDP of minus 0.7%
in the last quarter.
Coming to tourism: at the recent
BIT in Milan, a selected elite
of people indulged in self-praise
(we discuss this on other pages)
by uttering the most obvious
platitudes, with Antonio Tajani ,
Vice-President of the European
Commission, stating that “the
Italian travel and hospitality
sector has many unexpressed
potentialities”.
The sector being in need of attention,
for the sake of consistency,
it was recently decided to extend
the application of the tourist
tax to the entire Country! What
other calamity should we wait for,
to get rid of this additional unfair
impost?

Programs, menus and sundry guest
information. Staffs a reception/
hospitality desk, dealing with all
inquiries for non-English-speaking
guests. Translates speeches and

on embarkation, disembarkation

languages lessons for English-speaking
guests, (“German for beginners” etc.)
Socialises with guests, particularly in
the evening.
Skills Necessary: Bilingual fluency.
A good working knowledge of
gastronomic terminology. A pleasant
speaking voice and good microphone
technique. Computer literacy (at present
using PC based Words for Windows
programs). An outgoing personality and
good conversational skills. Immaculate
appearance. Strong Presentation skills.
PHOTOGRAPHER
The ship’s Photographer is responsible
for shooting photographs to the required
standards, processing all photographs
taken by Photographers onboard and
Passengers and selling photographs
and other photo items to Passengers.
This position requires the timely
execution of duties on a regular routine
governed by a daily schedule posted by
the Photo Manager. Unsupervised work
will require a high degree of accurate
and proactive thinking and decision
making.
Employees in the Photography
Department have a very high degree
of interaction and visibility with both
Passengers and other crew members.
Effective and efficient communications
skills and the ability to interact with
people of various nationalities and
cultures are essential.
Equipment Operation – The equipment
this position uses that requires extensive
knowledge
and skill for usage.
Job requirements:
The knowledge of the following photo
equipment is requested: Konica R-1,
QD-21Plus, QD-21 Super, 878 and
808 Minilab systems. Konica KP-50, KP-
46, KP32 Film processors. Nikon, D-1x,
D-1h, D-100, FM3a & FM2n Cameras.
Nikon and SunPak Flash systems.
Bogen/Calumet studio flash systems
and related accessories. IBM computer
systems with HPDesignJet 5000PS widebed
printers, drafting tablets & graphics
applications. Computer networks and
related equipment.
Strong computer skills, proficient in
Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator, Freehand
or similar types of Programs. Digital
cameras (professional grade) Studio
lighting, state of the art Digital Photo Lab
equipment operation and maintenance.
Graphic design and sales experience
are considered a plus.
Prefer at least a two year college
certificate in Photography and/or
related field.
Two years of experience in 35mm color
photography and digital photography,
including all aspects of shooting,
developing and processing, preferably
on a mini-lab. Weddings, Events &
People Photography experience a
plus. Strong customer service and
communication skills are required. Prior
employment in a high volume Mini-Lab
and sales environment is a plus. Must
have strong computer skills.
Experience in quality establishments
and good knowledge of English are
essential.

HEAD WAITER
Job Description:
The Head Waiter assists the Maitre
d´ Hotel in supervising all Food and
Beverage service activities. Responsible
for ensuring that the highest quality of
service is maintained in the assigned
area and that the staff follows the policies
and procedures of the company.
- Supervises all Waiters, Junior Waiters,
Buffet Stewards and Assistant Buffet
Stewards working in the assigned area
within the assigned section.
- Oversees staff in all areas assigned by
Maitre d´ Hotel: ensures all objectives,
including passenger satisfaction, are
successfully met.
- Assists during Food and Beverage
service and takes responsibility for
maximizing revenue.
- Oversees that table settings and all
equipment are used in the correct way.
- Ensures that the staff is familiar with the
content of menus, wine list, and food
and wine pairing.
- Responsible for training and motivating
staff in Food and Beverage and USPH
related issues.
- Reviews the progress of the Waiters
and Junior Waiters and assists the
Maitre d´ Hotel to prepare performance
evaluations.
- Assists with any and all other services
as requested by the Maitre d´ Hotel.
Job Requirements:
- High School, College of Catering/
Hotel Management School.
- Ability to speak and write in fluent
English.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge
of P.O.S. system.
- Excellent knowledge of food, wine and
beverage service.
- Previous experience as Maitre d´ Hotel
on cruise ship with similar high service
standards.
- Ability to handle stress.
- Ability to motivate and train staff in
quality service.
- Ability to communicate effectively with
guests.
- Excellent grooming standards.
Experience in quality establishments

essential.
