Starting from Dante Alighieri, Florence has always<br />
been historically ungrateful towards its most renowned<br />
citizens. After about ten years “debating”, postponing<br />
and changes in plans, finally this September Franco<br />
Zeffirelli’s museum school, better known as International<br />
Centre for Performing Arts, opened in the ex-law courts in<br />
piazza San Firenze. The opening ceremony was a true event<br />
as befits the Maestro. This is a place which has no equal<br />
in the world both for its exhibiting role and for the interesting<br />
vocational training and documentation activity. “All<br />
the papers, notes and drafts regarding my work are part of<br />
my archives which I chose to donate to Florence”, stated<br />
Franco Zeffirelli, “creating a Foundation so that my city,<br />
holder of priceless and unmatched artistic and cultural values,<br />
can dispose of a capital regarding performing arts”.<br />
The exhibition, educational, coaching, concert and filming<br />
research activities are spread on two floors, on an area of<br />
about 3,700 sq.m. The museum, situated on the first floor<br />

e cambiamenti di programma, finalmente questo mese di<br />
settembre ha aperto nell’ex tribunale di piazza San Firenze<br />
la scuola museo di Franco Zeffirelli, meglio definito come<br />
Centro Internazionale per le Arti dello Spettacolo. Già la cerimonia<br />
inaugurale è stata un vero evento come il Maestro<br />
meritava. È un luogo questo che non ha eguali al mondo sia<br />
per il suo ruolo espositivo che per una interessante attività<br />
formativa e di documentazione. “Tutte le carte, gli appunti<br />
e i bozzetti che riguardano il mio lavoro fanno parte del mio<br />
archivio che ho scelto di destinare a Firenze - ha affermato<br />
Franco Zeffirelli - creando una Fondazione perché la mia<br />
città, depositaria di valori artistici e culturali impagabili e<br />
ineguagliati possa disporre di un patrimonio delle arti dello<br />
spettacolo”. L’attività espositiva, didattica, formativa, di ricerca<br />
concertistica e cinematografica si estende su due pia-<br />

sketches, drawings and costume designs<br />
which the Maestro made and<br />
collected during his nearly 70 years<br />
of career. The exhibition space, divided<br />
in prose theatre, opera and music<br />
and cinema, illustrates in themes<br />
the development of theatre settings<br />
and filming productions integrated<br />
with photos of scenes. The permanent<br />
exhibition will be regularly sided<br />
with important temporary exhibitions<br />
narrating the extraordinary<br />
work by scenographers and costume<br />
designers from Renzo Mongiardino<br />
to Danilo Donati to Piero Tosi. There<br />
will also be the didactic part involving<br />
all that is relevant in the world<br />
of theatre and filming. The first<br />
course kicks off next November. But<br />
it will also be a Research Centre with<br />
in-depth studies and documentations<br />
of the show business. Complementani,<br />
in una superficie di circa 3.700<br />
metri quadrati. Il Museo, ubicato<br />
al primo piano dell’edificio, ospita<br />
oltre 250 opere di Zeffirelli tra bozzetti<br />
di scena, disegni e figurini di<br />
costumi che il Maestro ha realizzato<br />
e collezionato nei sui quasi 70 anni<br />
di attività. Il percorso espositivo,<br />
suddiviso in teatro di prosa, opera e<br />
musica, e cinema illustra per temi gli<br />
sviluppi degli allestimenti teatrali e<br />
delle produzioni cinematografiche,<br />
integrandosi con foto di scena. Alla<br />
mostra permanente si affiancheranno<br />
periodicamente importanti esposizioni<br />
temporanee che raccontano<br />
lo straordinario lavoro di scenografi<br />
e costumisti da Renzo Mongiardino<br />
a Danilo Donati e Piero Tosi. Ci<br />
sarà poi l’attività didattica che contemplerà<br />
tutte le discipline del mondo<br />
del tetro e del cinema. Il primo<br />
corso partirà il prossimo novembre.<br />
Ma sarà anche un Centro di ricerca,<br />
