We are proud to represent 26 Hardwood associations and interest groups from around the country and we must continue to take every possible opportunity to have our opinion heard and taken into account. In concert with this goal, we will also strive to increase participation from industry members both here in Washington, DC and locally. Our daily contact with elected officials definitely makes a difference, but when Members of Congress are at home they want to hear from their voters. The Hardwood industry will face returning and new challenges on Capitol Hill in 2015. We will continue to fight against unreasonable endangered species regulations related to the Northern Long Eared Bat; this will certainly be a challenge in the first quarter of the year. How the Northern Long Eared Bat is designated and what regulations are put in place to offer protections to the bat population could have devastating impacts on timber harvests and supplies of Hardwood lumber. Working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, its state and local affiliates, and Congress on reasonable action that protects both the bat and our industry has been a top priority in 2014 and will continue into the new year. Although it is not easy to predict exactly what policies will move forward in the legislative process, we will be looking for changes in energy efficiency rules so that they better recognize the benefits of using wood building materials, regulations governing carbon emissions from biomass, potential tax reform measures that could impact the industry, and funding for key programs including export promotion. If Congress moves on a comprehensive transportation bill next year, we will be promoting efforts to include an efficiency provision allowing heavier (not larger) trucks on our nation’s interstate system. One challenge and opportunity that we look forward to is meeting and educating new members of Congress about the importance of the Hardwood industry to the U.S. economy and how federal action can support a growing and thriving community. ■ In Kentucky, sustainability isn’t just for forests.
