WHO’S WHO IN HARDWOOD PURCHASING MICHAEL BONIN is owner of Custom Millworks, located in Westlake, LA. Custom Millworks is a manufacturer of straight-line and radius mouldings, interior and exterior doors, radius and rectangular transoms, and wood siding. The company purchases approximately 160,000 board feet per year of Hardwood lumber including Appalachian Red Oak, Maple, and Poplar (FAS, 4/4 through 8/4, 8 to 12 percent moisture content. Poplar is rough cut, while everything else is hit and miss). Sapele, Mahogany, Afrormosia, and Cypress are also purchased by Custom Millworks. Bonin graduated from Sulphur High School in Sulphur, LA, in 1979, and attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. He has held his present position with the company since 2007 when Custom Millworks opened its doors. Currently Bonin handles purchasing of materials for the company, as well as job quotes and overseeing daily operations. Custom Millworks is a member of the Louisiana Home Builders Association and the National Federation of Independent Business. Bonin is a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, snowskiing and hunting. He has been married to Darlene for 26 years and the couple has one daughter, one son and one granddaughter. Mulvain Woodworks is a manufacturer and sawmill purchasing approximately 150,000 board feet of Hardwood lumber from outside sources each year. Products include mouldings, stair systems, interior millwork, mantels, and unfinished Hardwood flooring. Species include Walnut, Cherry, Red and White Oak, Hard Maple, Ash, Hickory, and Nick Cook Poplar (high grades 4/4, 5/4 and 8/4, hit/miss planed). The company also offers some Hardwood lumber, kiln-drying, as well as the ability to take a customer’s own log and manufacture custom orders from it. Cook graduated from Boylan Catholic High School, Rockford, IL, in 2002, and from Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI, in 2008. He has worked for the company for 3 1/2 years, with nine months spent in his present position. Cook handles lumber purchasing along with customer service (social media, phone and email, walk-ins, payments and quotes). Cook previously worked for a local sawyer from 1998 to 2002 stacking lumber. A BRIEF SKETCH OF THE LEADING PURCHASING EXECUTIVES IN THE HARDWOOD INDUSTRY Caperton Furniture Works manufactures solid Hardwood furniture, including beds and dressers, dining sets, coffee tables, and side and end tables, among others. Walnut (FAS 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4), Maple (No. 1 Common, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4), Cherry (No. 1 Common 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4) and Poplar (FAS 4/4) are among the species handled by the company. Yearly lumber purchases total approximately 1.3 million board feet. Frank graduated from Egg Harbor Township High School, Egg Harbor Township, NJ, in 2005, and plans to graduate from Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, Martinsburg, WV, in 2015. He has worked at Caperton Furniture Works for four years, and since March of 2014 has worked as lumber purchaser and overseeing the rough end mill. Frank’s first position in the forest products industry was in Hardwood flooring installation. Other positions held within the industry include general construction and furniture building. Frank enjoys composing music and coaching his son. He has been married to Athena for three years and the couple has one son and one daughter. HG Johnson is a manufacturer of stair treads, mouldings, rosettes, vents and specialty items, purchasing approximately 360,000 board feet of Hardwood lumber per year. Species include Red and White Oak, Hickory, Alder, Poplar, Cherry and Walnut, with grades including No. 1 and Better, 4/4 and 5/4, rough, 6 to 8 percent dryness. Johnson graduated from Upper Lake High School, Upper Lake, CA, in 1956. His first position in the forest products industry was as a sawyer in a large sawmill in California from 1956 to 1960. Johnson has held the position of owner and general manager of HG Johnson for 25 years, handling lumber purchasing along with daily operations. Previous positions in the industry include operating a moulder along with machinery for dry kilns. In his spare time Johnson enjoys bluegrass music. He has been married to Rose for 55 years and the couple has five sons and two daughters, as well as six granddaughters and four grandsons. For more information contact 417-476-5131. Allen Kellogg ALLEN KELLOGG is president of Kellogg Hardwoods Inc., located in Bethel, CT. Kellogg Hardwoods manufactures custom mouldings, wide plank flooring and engineered flooring. The company purchases approximately 250,000 board feet of various domestic Hardwoods and softwoods per year, including American Cherry, Ash, Birch, Hickory, Maple, Red Oak, and eastern and heart pine, among others.
