Jones Jr., a lifelong Memphian, recently passed away. He was born on April 2, 1930. He attended The Training School (now Campus School) and was selected to be on the All-Memphis Basketball team. Jones graduated from Central High School, where he was President of Henry W. Jones Jr. both the Student Body and Honor Society. He was captain of their basketball team, which went to the state championship. Jones graduated from Washington and Lee University, where he played college basketball. He was Valedictorian of his class of 1952, as well as President of SAE fraternity. He was selected for numerous honorary societies, including Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation, Jones served in the United States Navy for three years as a First Lieutenant during the Korean War. After returning to Memphis, he joined Cathey-Williford-Jones Hardwood lumber company. In the following years, Jones was a leader in the lumber industry, serving as President of the Southern Hardwood Association and President of the Lumberman’s Club of Memphis. He was honored by receiving the Wilson Award for Lumberman of the Year. He served as President of the National Hardwood Lumber Association, a group of 1,100 members in both the U.S. and Canada, helping to bring their national headquarters to Memphis. In 2000 Henry purchased the Hardwood Market Report, staying active in the lumber industry until his retirement. Jones was a devoted, lifetime member of Idlewild Presbyterian Church and was active in various civic organizations and a dedicated volunteer. Jones is survived by his beloved wife Carol, with whom he shared 65 wonderful years of marriage; his son, Henry W. Jones III; two daughters: Caroline J. Winters and Dot J. Hammons (John); six grandchildren: Josh Winters (Katie), John Hammons (Josie), Rachel Hammons (fiancé Will Parks), Madeleine Peery (Travis), Caroline Jones and Henry Jones; four great- 102 OCTOBER 2018 n NATIONAL HARDWOOD MAGAZINE

Henry Winkelman Jones Jr. - Continued grandchildren: Anna Caroline Winters, Jackson Winters, Elizabeth Hammons and Pearson Hammons; and his brother, Terrell C. Jones (Mary Ann). He was predeceased by his parents Henry W. and Dorothy Jones, and son-in-law Chuck Winters. After a private burial, the family recently received friends at Idlewild Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Idlewild Presbyterian Church (1750 Union Ave., Memphis, TN 38104), The Trezevant Foundation (177 N. Highland St., Memphis, TN 38111), or Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services–Crosstown Garden (3185 Hickory Hill Rd., Memphis, TN 38115). n James Lanier Gray James Lanier Gray, born in Pontotoc County, MS, on March 5, 1930, passed away recently. He graduated from Ecru High School in 1948, where he was class president and went on to attend Holmes Jr. College on a basketball scholarship. Gray graduated from the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) Inspector Training School in 1950 before serving in the Korean War. He worked as lumber buyer and manager of Memphis Hardwood Flooring from 1966 to 1997 in Potts Camp, MS, during which time he served as director of the NHLA Board from 1977 to 1983. Gray enjoyed tennis and was an active member at the Racquet Club of Memphis. He lived in Germantown, TN, for over 33 years before retiring to Pickwick Lake to enjoy his love of boating on the Tennessee River. Gray is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Lynn Lorick Gray; three children, Karen Watson (Chuck) of Germantown, TN, Carol Smith of Florida, and Jeff Gray (Carlene) of Nashville, TN; sister, Gloria Holcomb of Pontotoc; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A private funeral service was held and the family requested that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital: 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105. n Changing World.
