The kiln, which was manufactured and installed by SII Dry Kilns, has a per-charge capacity of 60,000 board Ryan Peterson feet, and will bring Northern Hardwoods’ monthly drying capacity to 1.25 million board feet. Peterson said, “The addition of this dry kiln will allow Northern Hardwoods to supply even more Premium Michigan Hardwoods, but also allow for more growth into nonnative species like White Oak, Hickory and Walnut.” Northern Hardwoods, a Longyear Company, is an integrated forest products manufacturer, handling every step from timber harvesting to the production of veneer logs and kiln-dried lumber in 4/4 to 9/4 thicknesses. The company specializes in the production of White Hard Maple, but also manufactures Soft Maple, Yellow Birch, Red Oak, White Ash, Birdseye Maple, Basswood and Aspen. The investment moves USNR’s existing operation to a new, expanded facility that will be outfitted to meet the growing needs of that business. The Eugene facility is home to a thriving team that supports and advances USNR’s optimization and veneer handling activities. It’s the U.S. base for USNR’s optimization technology from Hardwood, shop and moulding to green lumber grade scanning to veneer scanning and grading solutions. From logs to lumber and blocks to dry veneer, the Eugene team has a key role in the development of innovations for the solid wood and engineered wood industries. The new facility encompasses more than 60,000 square feet and is situated on 2.1 acres. The majority of the space will house electrical manufacturing, with the remainder for engineering, research and development and training facilities, warehousing and sales offices. The new facility is expected to be operational in January 2019. AN UPDATE COVERING THE LATEST NEWS ABOUT HARDWOOD SUPPLIERS/VENDORS In his new role, Brown is responsible for overseeing all of the day-to-day operations of USNR. Brown began his professional career when he joined USNR as an accounting clerk 32 years ago, and since then has been promoted numerous times. • Eric Brousseau has been appointed to the new position of vice president—manufacturing. In this new role, Brousseau is responsible for overseeing USNR’s manufacturing operations in Woodland, Jacksonville, Plessisville and Söderhamn. • Chuck Van Horn has been appointed as vice president—capital projects. In this position, Van Horn continues to be responsible for overseeing USNR’s capital machinery projects. Since 2015, he has served as USNR’s director of capital projects. The change in his title is being made in recognition of his many significant contributions to the success of USNR during his 28-year tenure, as well as in recognition of the critical role that Van Horn performs within USNR’s management organization. DOUBLE SPRINGS, AL– Jason Johnson, owner of Winston Hardwood Inc., located here, announced that his company recently installed two DH dry kilns, each with a capacity of 60,000 board feet per charge. The kilns were manufactured by Nyle Systems LLC, based in Brewer, ME. The kilns will join an assortment of equipment that is currently in operation at Winston Hardwood’s mill site, which include two headrigs, one being a double cut band with an Opti-Scan 3D system, a line bar resaw, a thin kerf gang, Jason Johnson optimized board edger, automated grading station, precision end trimmer, 38-bay bin sorter and stainless-steel dip tank. Winston Hardwood produces Red and White Oak, Poplar, Ash, Hickory, Walnut, Cherry and other Hardwood species specializing in thick stock.
