2. SUMMARY
The main activity of JSC “GEOTERMA“ is preparation of hot water. This activity takes place in Klaipeda
geothermal demonstration plant. Four absorption heat pumps extract energy from 38 o C geothermal water
which is boosted by three natural gas hot water boilers. The heat energy is then supplied to the local district
heating system.
Company has the capacity to extract about 250 m 3 /h of geothermal water, but injection is limited to about
110 m³/h. In such situation, Company decided to use part of geothermal water (up to140 m³/h) for other
purposes, one of them – health treatment. This way was formulated the common goal of this project – start
using geothermal water in balneology.
Geothermal water, its possibilities of using
Geothermal water is ground water that is heated by the earth’s energy. Geothermal waters usually contain
many salts, chlorine, calcium, magnesium, iron etc.
Geothermal water is usually used for the following purposes:
• Space heating by geothermal heat pumps;
• Agricultural drying, greenhouse heating;
• Aquaculture pond heating;
• Industrial uses;
• Bathing and swimming;
• In balneology (therapeutic use);
• Space cooling, air conditioning.
The importance of geothermal water in health care and wellness sectors
The use of geothermal water provides significant long-term advantages for heath care and wellness sector
companies worldwide.
Health care and wellness tourism is one of the fastest growing forms of tourism worldwide. This growth,
which is related to the increasing needs of people to maintain or improve their health and welfare, stimulates
the growth of the range of services supplied. One form of these services involves balneological procedures,
for which geothermal water is used. In order to remain competitive company in the growing rapidly market,
more and more companies are seeking for opportunities to use geothermal water to provide health and
wellness services, thereby improving their business prospects.
The main advantage of the geothermal water is related to its therapeutic and healing features. Geothermal
water procedures help to stimulate heart activity and improve nervous system. It also helps to treat particular
diseases, health problems. In addition to these features, geothermal water provides pleasant experience,
improves mental and physical health, helps to relax and avoid the negative consequences of stress.
The features of geothermal water extracted by Company
In order to extract water, Company uses wells of Klaipeda geothermal demonstration plant. Water from these
wells is characterized by its thermal features (about 38 0 C) and significantly high general mineralization
(nearly 96 g/l).
In the end of 2011, Company initiated a study on the impact of extracted water on human physiological
parameters. According to preliminary findings of this study, geothermal water procedures help to improve
the activity of human heart muscle, to normalize heart rate (its remain lower for a longer time then using
normal tap water). In this way water helps for a person to relax better, also to reduce negative effect of
stress.
The target market of geothermal water
Considering the features of water extracted by Company, current market condition as well as trends
worldwide and in Lithuania, it is predicted that geothermal water could be attractive to health care and
wellness companies, which use (or could use) water for the treatment or as a way to prevent diseases.
