Projects, personnel management
VU Senate Commission Work group for Library
affairs (chairman – vice-dean of the VU
Faculty of Law Dr J. Galginaitis) together
with the Board of managers of the Library
attends to the planning, organization, management
and control of the Library work.
The activities of two work groups set in 2003
– Group of projects, improvement and development
of the Library work and Group of
the strategy of continual education and in-service
training served the purpose. This year
their members alongside to their direct work
also took an active part in decisions concerning
optimisation of library administration
and management. The Senate Commission
Work group for Library affairs discussed
issues of Library funding and possibilities
of usage of copied material necessary
to the readers.
Special attention was accorded to the
management of projects and public relations
as well as to in-service training. At
the end of 2004 a Department of Public Relations
was formed from inner reserves of
VUL, i.e., three staff members resigned,
and on this basis a new structure was established.
Applications to European structural
funds had to be a priority work of the
Group of projects, improvement and development
of the Library work. Two preliminary
applications for the project Information,
competence, success have been prepared
as well as an application for the Investment
Project of reconstruction of unused premises
of Vilnius University Library asking
for support of preparation of technical documentation.
The Project of renovation and
modernization of Lithuanian libraries of state
significance was prepared complementing
the Program of renovation and modernization
of libraries administered by the Ministry
of Culture, and the project Odysseus
devoted to integrate disabled academic
youth in the academic community of VU
and financed by UNESCO. Projects devoted
to safeguard and promote cultural heritage
were also prepared: Monuments of
Old Hebrew writings (for the Program of
Research Centre for Jewish History and
Culture of Eastern Europe), Digitisation of
personal photonegative archive collection of
Prof. resolves Kudaba, and Vilniaus þinios
full text database creation (both for the Seimas
of the Republic of Lithuania programme),
Equipment for safeguarding and promotion
of cultural heritage held at Vilnius
University Library (for the Japanese Government
Culture Support Program). Three
projects have already received funding for
implementation.
Group of the strategy of continual education
and in-service training prepared strategy
of in-service training of VUL staff and
drew up a plan of activities. The aim of
these activities is to deepen competence
of librarians enabling them to serve the readers
with qualitative interactive information
sources; it requires cultivation of special
skills and improved motivation of the
staff. VUL officers took part in courses of
computer literacy as well as in theoretical
and practical courses devoted to information
search in free access and subscribed
databases. In future special attention is to
be paid to faculty libraries and to improving
the qualification of their staff. It is
planned to include the whole faculty library
collection in the electronic catalogue and
to implement the reader service sub-system
