THE LIBRARY IN 2004
The University Library devoted a number
of deeds to mark the occasion of 425th anniversary
of Vilnius University. The Library
had to deal with problems that were
brought forward by the 2004 plan of activities:
design project of the new Library building
in Saulëtekis Avenue, computerization,
projects, safeguarding and promotion of cultural
heritage, staff management, library automatic
fire alarm system, repair works of
the Library premises.
Works of projection of new Library building
moved on when the Lithuanian government
allocated 800.000 LT. Together with
the Vilnius University Maintenance and Service
Board and public enterprise Statybos
literatûros ir projektø biuras a new investment
project of Vilnius University Library
building was prepared and a tender was announced
for the correction of this project.
The tender went to the company Ekoprojektas
and at present the designing work of the
new Library building is underway; a time
table of work has been made.
13 computerized workplaces have been
arranged additionally in the reader’s area
using funds of VU and United Nations development
programs. Assisted by the closed
stock company Technaorbis the Library
had prepared a computer net updating project
whose implementation was incorporated
in one of the Library projects of structural
funds. The database of the University
staff created by VU Computing Centre and
the Board of Personnel enabled to serve the
members of the University community by
means of computer since November 2004.
In 2004 upon joining libraries of three
faculties (Communication, Law, and Economics)
the Saulëtekis Information Centre
(SIC) was founded. Open stacks, computerized
workplaces, and aesthetical surroundings
offer perfect conditions for studying.
At the end of 2004 a Commission formed
by the decree of the Rector to assess the
activities of VU faculty libraries accomplished
the analysis of their work and submitted
principal strategic directions of modernizing
faculty libraries to the VU Senate
Commission.
We are greatly troubled by the absence
of fire alarm system in the repository of printed
and written heritage of national significance.
For several years already attempts have
been made to start projection of such
system however in 2004 no funding was yet
received. By the decree of the Rector the
Assessment Commission was formed which
besides VU Library officers included Director
of Lithuanian Art Museum R. Budrys,
VU Prof. D. Kaunas, a jurist consult of
the Governmental Archives Department R.
Kraujelis, and the head of the Rare Book
Department of the Library of the Lithuanian
Academy of Sciences Dr. D. Narbutienë.
The assessed value of old collections
of VU Library amounted to 2,7 milliard LT.
Approaching 425th jubilee of the University
the premises of the Library were renovated:
