Šogad vētras bojājumimums izmaksāja $85,000, no kuriem $24,000 apdrošināšananesedza. Pagājšgad sniega un ledus bojājumi izmaksāja$155,000, no kuriem $20,000 netika atmaksāts. Šie skaitļineieskaita laiku un darbu, ko mūsu paši talcinieki undarbinieki ieguldīja šajos projektos.Kad šo pieminu, vairums cilvēki atbild, paldies Dievam parVairāki cilvēki man šovasar prasija, kā man patīk penzija. Andrejs Dumpisadministrātorsl a t v i e š u c e n t r s G a r e z e r s5 7 7 3 2 L o n e T r e e R d .T h r e e R i v e r s , M I 4 9 0 9 3g a r e z e r s @ g a r e z e r s . o r g2 6 9 . 2 4 4 . 5 4 4 1G Z r e d a k t o r e | G Z e d i t o r : M ā r a K o r e ( m k o r e @ g a r e z e r s . o r g )f o t o | p h o t o s : L i e n e D i n d o n e , L ī g a E j u p e , M ā r a K o r e , A s t r a R e v e l i ņ a , D z i d r a T r o p aw w w . g a r e z e r s . o r g6 Gaŗezera ziņas
Dear friends of Garezers,In this issue of GZ you’ll see a recap of many of the „off-season”or „auxilliary” activities that happen here. These events, such as the 3x3 camp, exhibits, parties and other functions, are not officially organized by Garezers, and do not happenduring our main summer season, but they expand and enrichGarezers’ culture and community. An important part of our fabric here is the „Ciems” community. After the extensive storm damage, we felt it was theright thing to do what we could to help Ciems clean up andrebuild its Park. Garezers donated labor and use of equipment;Garezers Board President Karlis Vizulis, on behalf ofFriends of Garezers, and I personally contributed to help thiscommunity, whose members have donated their time andmoney to help Garezers for the past 20+ years. This time of year, we are busy shutting down Garezers’ facilitiesfor the winter, but at the same time already planning fornext summer. We are currently preparing for our strategicplanning session this weekend, as well as our budget meetingat the beginning of December. After two years in this job, I find budgeting and planning tobe the most frustrating of my tasks. So much so that at timesI just want to scream. But instead, I suck it up, make a plan, keep my head up and try to get it done. So far that hasworked – not as well I would have liked, but it has worked.Of course, the to-do list is always larger than the budget. Butthe nature of Garezers makes the budgeting process evenmore difficult, since there are so many expensive but unplannedrepairs. These are above and beyond the „normal”unplanned expenses such as repairing and/or replacingwater heaters, kitchen equipment, water and power lines, and dealing with the many large and small crises that springup during the summer.Because we have so much acreage and so many buildings,we are especially prone to weather damage. This year wehad $85,000 in damages from the tornado, of which $24,000was not covered by insurance; last year we had $155,000 indamages from ice and snow, of which $20,000 was not covered. This does not include the value of the work done at ourspring and fall „talkas,” nor by our facilities workers duringthe season. Most people’s response to this is, thank goodness for insurance. But as any home- or car owner knows, insurancecomes at a cost. After these large claims, we have had tochange insurance carries at an increase of about 30% orabout $8,000 to our annual premium. My response, more often, is thank goodness for volunteers. At last spring’s „Supertalka” we had a small army of eagerhelpers with chainsaws, while this fall we had a much smallergroup, but they were able to accomplish an impressive list oftasks, including removing the docks; repairing the roof of thewood storage building; repairing and replacing the Garezerssign on Hoffman Rd.; installing drywall in the Kronvaldabuilding; and generally cleaning up the Dzintari, GVV andDining Hall areas.Having too many expenses and not enough revenue is notunique to Garezers – it is something that every level of society, from individuals all the way up to the federal government,is facing in today’s economy. Garezers is fortunate tohave such dedicated volunteers, donors, and families involvedin making sure that Garezers surivives and succeeds. This is not a handful of people, it is the efforts of the entireGarezers community. I’m very grateful for everyone’s support.Next summer’s major event – the Song Festival – will happenoutside of Garezers, and our budget needs to accomodateand reflect that. We will have additional expenses, such astransporting all of GVV’s 100+ participants to Milwaukee, while revenue will likely decrease, as we will „lose” visitorsduring the July 4th long weekend. At the same time, programtuition will not be increased, and we will be looking at tieringGBD and GBD fees to be more affordable for families whowant to have their children stay longer at Garezers.Prioiritizing capital projects for 2012 is in the works as well, and we will update you on the status of projects budgeted in2011 in the upcoming Garezers Annual Report in January.Several people asked me this summer how I liked retirement.Retirement, I asked? Well, this is not a real job, is it? At timeslike these I chuckle to myself and think, I sure hope this isn’twhat retirement feels like!Andy DumpisExecutive Directornr. 1227
