De combinatie van cultuur, historie en kennis maakt Leiden tot een unieke
toplocatie voor zakelijke bijeenkomsten, organisatoren van congressen
en touroperators. Leiden ligt centraal in de Randstad, tussen de grote
metropolen in. Juist die positie heeft velen al doen besluiten om in onze
stad neer te strijken voor een dag of langer. Ik hoop ook u te kunnen
overtuigen van de voortreffelijke mogelijkheden die wij te bieden hebben.
Wie Leiden kent weet dat zij haar
titel Stad van Ontdekkingen meer
dan waar maakt. Het begint al
met de oudste universiteit van
Nederland waar jaarlijks duizenden
studenten komen studeren.
Leiden was en is nog steeds een
echte kennisstad en heeft al veel
Nobelprijswinnaars voortgebracht.
Nu nog worden er dagelijks kleine
en grote ontdekkingen in Leiden
gedaan. Op de Universiteit Leiden,
in het LUMC en zeker ook op het
Leiden Bio Science Park. Dit park
is inmiddels het meest toonaangevende
lifesciencepark in Europa,
met 145 hectare bedrijven, kennis-
en onderwijsinstellingen, musea
en ondersteunende functies op
het gebied van biotechnologie.
De vele kennisinstellingen in de
stad hebben goede voorzieningen
voor congressen en seminars. Niet
alles onder één dak, maar wel op
loopafstand van elkaar, zijn er vele
prachtige accommodaties om te
overnachten. Dit aantal is overigens
flink gegroeid de laatste tijd.
Daarbij opgeteld de aantrekkelijkheid
van onze historische binnenstad,
meer dan tien musea, bijna
honderd hofjes en ontelbaar veel
monumenten maken het aanbod
van Leiden Stad van Ontdekkingen
compleet.
Leiden is een stad vol mogelijkheden.
Een stad vol slimme en
mooie hersenen, en met passievolle
inwoners en initiatiefrijke ondernemers.
Afgelopen jaren hebben
wij al een warm welkom kunnen

Anyone who knows Leiden knows
that the city truly lives up to its
name of City of Discoveries. To
start with, the city is home to the
oldest university in the Netherlands
where every year thousands
of students come to study. Leiden
was and is still a true knowledge
city, that has produced many
Nobel prize winners. Every day,
discoveries – from the smallest to
the biggest – are made in Leiden;
at the University, at the Leiden
University Medical Center and
certainly on the Leiden Bio Science
Park. This park has developed into
the most prominent life science
park in Europe, with 145 hectares
dedicated to science businesses,
knowledge and educational
institutions, museums and support
organisations in the field of biotechnology.
The many knowledge institutions
for which Leiden is renowned offer
excellent facilities for conferences
and seminars. To complement
these facilities, the city also has a
range of beautiful hotel accommodation
for your overnight stay, with
several new hotels having been added
recently. In Leiden, because
of the unique nature of some of
our venues, our meeting facilities

geschiedenis van
Leiden
De geschiedenis van Leiden gaat ver terug; al ver voor onze jaartelling
woonden mensen aan de oevers van de Rijn. Omstreeks 1200 had de
nederzetting zich zodanig ontwikkeld dat de graaf van Holland de inwoners
stadsrechten gaf; de stad Leiden was geboren. Aan het eind van de
vijftiende eeuw was Leiden de grootste stad van het graafschap Holland.
Dit was voor een groot deel te danken aan de internationale lakenindustrie.
De voorspoed die Leiden in die tijd doormaakte, weerspiegelt zich in
bouwwerken als de Hooglandse Kerk en de Pieterskerk.
Leidens Ontzet
Vanaf de zestiende eeuw keerde
het economisch tij. Het was de tijd
van de Hervorming en protestantse
stromingen werden fel vervolgd.
Leiden sloot zich in 1572 aan bij
de Nederlandse opstand tegen
de Spaanse overheersing en werd
door de Spanjaarden belegerd.
De inwoners vielen ten prooi aan
ziekte en honger en bijna was
Leiden in handen gevallen van de
Spanjaarden, maar op 3 oktober
1574 vluchtten de Spaanse
troepen en trokken de troepen van
Willem van Oranje Leiden binnen.
Zij deelden voedsel uit: een half
brood met kaas en haring voor
iedere inwoner. Deze bevrijding,
Leidens Ontzet, wordt tot op de
dag van vandaag gevierd met een
gigantisch volksfeest. Als dank
voor het heldhaftige verzet
dat de stad tijdens het
geschiedenis van Leiden
beleg bood, stichtte Willem
van Oranje op 8 februari 1575
de Universiteit Leiden.
De Leidse sleutels
Leiden is de Sleutelstad. Overal
in de stad duiken de sleutels
weer op. Dat is al zo sinds 1293,
toen op de officiële documenten
van de ‘stadt Leyde’ steeds vaker
een stadszegel sierde met Petrus
daarop. In zijn hand draagt de
apostel een sleutel. De combinatie
tussen Petrus en een sleutel is
een bekende. Hij gaat terug op
een Bijbeltekst (Mattheüs 16 vers
19) waarin Jezus tegen Petrus
zegt: “Ik zal u geven de sleutels
van het koninkrijk der hemelen.”
Al in 1121 lieten de graven van
Holland een kapel bouwen die
gewijd was aan Petrus en Paulus,
de huidige Pieterskerk.
Rembrandt van Rijn
Rembrandt van Rijn werd op
15 juli 1606 geboren in de
Weddesteeg in Leiden en woonde
er de eerste 26 jaar van zijn
leven. Dat waren belangrijke
jaren. Hij leerde op de Latijnse
school de klassieken en besloot
vervolgens schilder te worden.
Eenmaal volleerd vestigde hij
zich in Leiden als zelfstandig
schilder. In zijn Leidse
atelier is menig meesterwerk
ontstaan. In Museum
De Lakenhal hangt een
schilderij uit de Leidse periode
van de schilder.

History of Leiden
Leiden’s history stretches back a long way; long before our calendar
started, people had settled on the banks of the Rhine. By 1200 the
settlement had grown to such a size that the Count of Holland gave the
people city rights, heralding the birth of the city of Leiden. At the end of
the fifteenth century, Leiden was the biggest city in the county of Holland,
mainly due to the international cloth industry for which the city was famous.
The prosperity enjoyed by Leiden in this period is reflected in such imposing
buildings as the Hooglandse kerk and the Pieterskerk.
The Relief of Leiden
In the sixteenth century, the
economic tide turned. It was the
era of the Reformation, when
Protestant movements were
fiercely persecuted. In 1572,
Leiden joined the Dutch revolt
(led by the Prince of Orange)
against the Spanish invaders,
and the city was beseiged by the

Spanish. The citizens fell prey to
disease and hunger, and Leiden
almost fell into the hands of the
Spanish, but on 3 October 1574
the Spanish invaders fled and the
troops of the Prince of Orange
entered the city. They distributed
food to the starving citizens: half
a loaf of bread with cheese and
herring for every person. This
liberation, the Relief of Leiden,
is still celebrated every year, right
up to the present day, with a
gigantic local party. As a reward
for the city’s resistance during the
Spanish occupation, William of
Orange founded Leiden University
on 8 February 1575.
The keys to Leiden
Leiden is the City of Keys; the
motif of keys can be seen all
over the city. This dates back to
1293 when a city seal depicting
Saint Peter featured on official
documents of the ‘stadt Leyde’. In
his hand the apostle carries a key.
The combination of Saint Peter
and a key is a well-known symbol
taken from the Bible (Matthew,
16, v. 19), when Jesus says to
Peter: ‘I will give you the keys to
the City of Heaven.’ As early as
1121 the Counts of Holland had
a chapel built, dedicated to Saint
Peter and Saint Paul. This is the
present Pieterskerk.
Rembrandt van Rijn
Rembrandt van Rijn was born on
15 July 1606 in the Weddesteeg
in Leiden, where he lived for the
first 26 years of his life. These
were important years for him.
He studied classics at the Latin
school, then decided to become
a painter. Having trained under
Jacob Isaacsz Swanenburg,
Rembrandt set himself up in
Leiden as an independent artist.

binnen handbereik, waarvan een

de binnenstad, maar bijvoorbeeld
ook in het Bio Science Park, waar
het gonst van de vernieuwingen
dankzij de samenwerking

De life sciences zijn in Leiden
geconcentreerd op het Leiden
Bio Science Park. Het Leiden
Bio Science Park is het grootste
life sciences kenniscluster
in Nederland met zo’n zestig
gespecialiseerde biotech bedrijven
en kennisinstellingen. Het bestaat
sinds 1984 en is ongeveer 110
hectare groot, een gebied groter
dan de Leidse binnenstad.
Op het park bevinden zich biotech
bedrijven in allerlei soorten en maten:
van starters tot multinationals,
van bedrijven die zich specialiseren
in de research tot productiebedrijven
en toeleveranciers.
Universiteit Leiden
De Universiteit Leiden is een internationaal
vermaarde onderzoeksgerichte
universiteit. In enkele
tientallen onderzoeksinstituten
voert men wetenschappelijk
onderzoek uit op uiteenlopende
vakgebieden. De Leidse onderzoekinstituten
maken vaak deel uit
van landelijke onderzoekscholen,

Het Leids Universitair Medisch
Centrum (LUMC) is een van de
acht universitaire medische centra

de kwaliteit van de gezondheidszorg

als internationaal een leidende rol
blijven spelen. Het LUMC biedt
specialistische behandelingen

concentrated in the Leiden Bio
Science Park. This park is the
largest life sciences knowledge
cluster in the Netherlands, with

The park has been in existence
since 1984 and occupies some

Museum De Lakenhal
Ervaar de stadscultuur van Leiden

De Lakenhal, ooit centrum van de

glas en zilver bewonderen.
Molenmuseum De Valk
‘De Valk’ is een stellingkorenmolen
uit 1743. De huidige stenen
stellingmolen is de derde molen
die op deze plek heeft gestaan.
Sinds 2 juni 1966 is de molen
in gebruik als gemeentelijk
molenmuseum. Sinds 2000 is
De Valk weer maalvaardig. De
zeven verdiepingen zijn allen
toegankelijk voor bezoekers.

Dinosaur skeletons, masterpieces by Rembrandt and Lievens, Wajang dolls from Indonesia, medical history from

De Valk windmill museum
‘De Valk’ is a flour mill dating from
1743. The present stone windmill
is the third mill to have stood on
this site. The mill, that started
milling grain again in 2000, has
been in use since 2 June 1966 as
a municipal museum. The complete
mill, with its seven floors, is
open to visitors.

Hortus botanicus Leiden
Meer dan vier eeuwen verzamelen,
verzorgen en bestuderen hebben
deze prachtige studietuin van de
Universiteit Leiden voortgebracht
met planten uit alle windstreken.
De parel van de Hortus is de
Victoria amazonica, de reuzenwaterlelie.
Wandelend door de tuinen
komt u boomreuzen tegen, zoals
de Ginkgo biloba uit 1785. Ook
de Clusiustuin, een reconstructie
van de eerste tuin uit 1594, en de
Japanse tuin mag u niet missen.

More than four centuries of collecting,
cultivating and studying
have produced Leiden University’s
wonderful teaching garden with its
plants from all corners of the world.
The prize exhibit of the Hortus is
the famous Victoria amazonica, the
giant water lily. Strolling through
the garden you’ll come across
giant trees like the Ginkgo biloba
planted here in 1785. Make sure
you don’t miss the Clusius garden,
a reconstruction of the first garden
created in 1594, and the tranquil
Japanese garden.

Pilgrim Fathers lived while in
Leiden, and you will be able to
learn about the history of their
Leiden period (1608-1620). In
1620, the Pilgrims left from the
Rapenburg via Delfshaven and
Southampton for America, to
found a new nation there.

De Burcht
Het hart van Leiden wordt gevormd
door de Burcht. De Burcht
van Leiden is één van de oudste
nog bestaande voorbeelden van
een mottekasteel in Nederland.
Het is een kunstmatig opgeworpen
heuvel (motte) met (aanvankelijk)
een houten burcht. In 1203 is hier
gevochten om het graafschap van
Holland. De Burcht is vrij toegankelijk
en als u de steile trap heeft
weten te bedwingen wacht een
prachtig uitzicht over de Leidse
binnenstad als beloning.
Rapenburg
Deze gracht, het Rapenburg, werd
niet lang na 1200 gegraven om de
nog jonge stad Leiden goed te kunnen
verdedigen. In de 17de eeuw
groeide hij uit tot de belangrijkste
en meest chique gracht van de
stad. Hier woonden rijke handelaren
en beroemde hoogleraren, zoals de
arts Herman Boerhaave (Rapenburg
33). Deze ‘notabelen’ lieten er
fraaie herenhuizen bouwen. Volgens
sommige 18de-eeuwse aardrijkskundigen
was het Rapenburg zelfs
het mooiste plekje ter wereld!
Hooglandse Kerk
Vlakbij de Burcht staat de
Hooglandse Kerk, een imposante
laatgotische kruisbasiliek in het
hart van Leiden. De Hooglandse
Kerk is zonder twijfel één van de
mooiste en meest imponerende
kerken van Leiden. Opvallend
is het lijnenspel van de gotiek
en de enorme ramen geven een
uitbundig overweldigend licht in
de grote ruimte.
De kerk wordt geroemd om zijn
elegantie. Het vensteroppervlak
is het grootste in Nederland.
Het brede dwarsschip is met
zijn 65,70 meter het breedste
gotische dwarsschip ter wereld en
geeft een beeld van de geplande
opzet van een immense kerk, die
zich na voltooiing zou kunnen
meten met de grootste gotische
kathedralen van Europa.

Langs Leidse Hofjes Leiden telt
maar liefst 35 hofjes, vrijwel allemaal

The Citadel
The Citadel stands at the heart of
the city, and is one of the oldest
remaining examples of a motte
fortress in the Netherlands. It
comprises a man-made mound (a
motte), originally with a wooden
fortress. In 1203 this is where the
struggle for the county of Holland
was fought. The Citadel is open to
the public, and if you’re prepared
to negotiate the steep stairs, you
will be rewarded with a breathtaking
view over Leiden.
Rapenburg
This canal, Rapenburg was dug
not long after 1200 to provide
the still young city of Leiden with
good defences. In the 17th century
it became one of the principal
and most fashionable canals in
the city. Rich merchants and
celebrated professors lived here in
imposing mansions. According to
some 18th-century geographers
Rapenburg was the most beautiful
spot on earth!
Hooglandse Kerk
Not far from the Citadel you will
find the Hooglandse Kerk, an
imposing late Gothic cruciform
church in the heart of Leiden.
It is without doubt one of the most
beautiful and imposing of Leiden’s
churches. The remarkable Gothic
lines and the enormous windows
bathe the massive interior space
with an overwhelming light. The
church is renowned for its elegance
and has the largest expanse of
windows in the Netherlands. The
transept at 65.7 metres wide is
the broadest Gothic transept in the
world and gives a clear impression
of just how immense the completed
structure would have been.
It was planned to rival the largest
Gothic cathedrals in Europe.

Museum Boerhaave is the Dutch National
Museum for the History of Science and
Medicine. In 1931 it opened its doors.
Since 1991 Museum Boerhaave is
located in the former Caecilia Hospital, in
the centre of Leiden. This historic building
has had various functions over time. The
original nunnery of St Caecilia dates from
the early 15th century. In 1635 it became
an University hospital. It was here, around
1720, that Herman Boerhaave gave his
famous sickbed lessons that drew medical
students to Leiden from around the world.
After extensive restoration, the building
has been used as a museum. One of the
Boerhaave rooms is used for congresses
and events. The Anatomical Theatre and
the lovely garden can also be used to

Gravensteen
Het Gravensteen is een van de
oudste en meest interessante
gebouwen van Leiden. Eeuwenlang
was het een gevangenis. De oudste
kerker, rond 1200 gebruikt door
de graven van Holland (die er
indertijd direct naast woonden),
is nog steeds te vinden in de voet
van de robuuste vierkante toren in
het midden van het complex.

Het SieboldHuis biedt het mooiste
uit het oude en nieuwe Japan in
een Hollands huis met historische
allure; prenten, lakwerk en
keramiek, fossielen, herbaria,
geprepareerde dieren, munten,
kleding, oude landkaarten en
honderden andere schatten zijn
tussen 1823 en 1830 in Japan

Academisch Historisch Museum
Het Academisch Historisch

De Bibliotheca Thysiana, bij

behuizing bewaard is gebleven.

The Gravensteen is one of the oldest
and most interesting buildings
in Leiden. For centuries it was a
prison. The oldest dungeon, used
in around 1200 by the Counts of
Holland (who lived in the adjacent
building), can still be seen at the
foot of the robust square tower in
the centre of the complex.
SieboldHuis
The SieboldHuis offers the best
of ancient and modern Japan in
a charming and historic Dutch
house: prints, lacquer work and
ceramics, fossils, herbaria, mounted
animals, coins, clothing, old
maps and hundreds of other treasures
collected in Japan between
1823 and 1830 by German doctor
Philipp Franz von Siebold.

The Academic Historical Museum
dates back more than seventyfive
years and is located in the
Academy Building. The Academy
Building, originally constructed
in the early sixteenth century as
the convent church of an order of
Dominican nuns, has been part
of Leiden University since 1581.
The rich history of the university is

The Thysiana Library, bequeathed
by Leiden scholar Joannes
Thysius (1622-1653), is the only
library in the Netherlands from

is still preserved in its original

thousands of pamphlets covering
all fields of knowledge dating
from the fifteenth, sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries.

of recreatiegebied Kaag en Braassem
waar je kunt zwemmen, varen, recreeren,
zelfs een cruise maken.’

Leiden, de ligging De ligging
van de stad Leiden is ideaal: op
steenworp afstand van grote centra
als Den Haag en Amsterdam.
De stad is internationaal bereikbaar,
met de luchthaven Schiphol
op 20 minuten en het kleinere
Rotterdam Airport op 25 minuten
afstand. Tevens vindt u op een
tiental kilometers van Leiden de
Noordzeekust en bent u ook zo in
het gebied van het Groene Hart.
Auto Met de auto is Leiden goed
bereikbaar. Leiden is gelegen tussen
de snelwegen A4 en A44. De
binnenstad is weliswaar autoluw,
maar tegelijk liggen in een cirkel
rond het historische hart meer dan
3000 parkeerplaatsen voor bezoekers,
verspreid over verschillende
parkeergarages en grote en kleine
parkeerterreinen.
Parkeerterrein Haagweg (tip)
Het grootste parkeerterrein van
Leiden ligt aan de Haagweg en
functioneert als een volwaardig
transferium. Zowel overdag als
‘s avonds rijden (gratis) pendelbusjes
van het parkeerterrein
naar alle plekken in het centrum
en uiteraard ook weer terug.
Voor groepen zijn er speciale
afspraken te maken, zodat u altijd
verzekerd bent van vervoer naar

Openbaar vervoer Leiden is
uitstekend te bereiken met het
openbaar vervoer. Vanuit diverse
richtingen stoppen er treinen
op station Leiden Centraal. Vanuit
dit station loopt u zo de binnenstad
in. En de bussen rijden met
een hoge frequentie naar vrijwel
alle plekken in de stad.

is ideally located within a short
travelling distance of major
centres such as The Hague and
Amsterdam. The city can also be
reached easily by international
visitors, with Schiphol just 20
minutes away and Rotterdam’s
smaller airport at 25 minutes
distance. Leiden is within ten
kilometres of Holland’s North Sea
coast, and the Green Heart of the
Netherlands is also close at hand.
By car Leiden is located between
the A4 and A44 motorways, which
makes it easy to reach by car. The
city centre is a pedestrian-only
area, but visitors will find space
for more than 3,000 cars in the
many small and large car parks
and garages spread around the
periphery of the centre.
Haagweg car park
(recommended for visitors)
Leiden’s biggest car park is on

the Haagweg, and provides full
park-and-ride services to the city
centre. During the daytime and in
the evenings, shuttle buses will
take you from the car park to all
the main spots in the city - and
bring you back, of course. Special
arrangements can be made for
groups, so that you can always be
sure of transport to the city centre.

Public transport Leiden is easy
to reach by public transport.
Trains from all directions stop
at Leiden Central Station, and
the city centre is just a short
walk from the station. Or, if you
prefer, there is a frequent bus
service from the station to almost
anywhere in the city.
