10 DOUBLE DUTCH 2009│7 working Night of the Queen 25 April 2009 Wining and dining with the (Dutch) stars Before kicking off your shoes and hitting that dance floor, together with the DBAV, the Orange Committee has organised a very special socalled walking dinner. Dutch top chef Julius Jaspers and his two (also top chef) friends, Ron Blaauw, 2 Michelin stars, and Alain Caron are coming to Ho Chi Minh City especially to cook this charity dinner. The funds raised during the dinner are meant for the renovation of a new orphanage, Sunray, in D3 HCMC, run by Julius Jaspers. Julius Jaspers is the culinary director of Studio Bazar, a small chain of kitchen-stores in Amsterdam. He has travelled to Vietnam many times since 1992 and is very fond of the booming city of Saigon. He decided he wanted to return something to the city where he was always able to find things for his shops. From the beginning, his heart went out to the children of HCMC. In those days, the streets of Ho Chi Minh City were filled with thousands of children scraping together a little money by selling postcards and cigarettes to make themselves a living. They often did not have a home to go to by the end of the day. Girls especially, were in danger of ending up in prostitution. Julius decided to do something for these children. Studio Bazar financed the building of a brand new “safehouse”, and committed itself to paying all operating costs for the next ten years. In October 1998, the house was officially opened and named “Sunflower”. Since then, thirty girls between the ages of five and nine have moved in. They have exchanged their life on the streets for a child’s life as it should be: free of worry. They can attend school, play and be sure of healthy nutrition and a roof over their heads. The daily care is in the hands of two supervisors, a manageress and, obviously, a cook. After Sunflower, 3 more orphanage homes were realised and looked after by his friends. In addition to the financial support, Julius is also involved in offering healthcare and education to all the boys and girls in his orphanages. All in all very worthwhile causes. A new project in D3 HCMC, called Sunray, which houses 30 boys, is now in dire need of renovation and financial support for the next 10 years.
