221 ‘PRIDE WAS THE FIRST TIME I WASN’T AWARE OF MY QUEERNESS’ RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bob the Drag Queen Text: Martijn Tulp 008
Interview / Bob the Drag Queen After a lackluster season 7, the eighth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race was back in full form. 30-year-old Bob the Drag Queen (real name: Christopher Caldwell) took this year’s crown and we got a chance to speak with her about the prize, PrEP and purses. Congrats on your big win! What have the reactions been like so far? ‘Well, people were really nice to me beforehand, and they’re still really nice to me now.’ didn’t know people were being mean to me. I thought everyone was nice.’ What was the most challenging part of being on the show? ‘There were a lot of challenges, so it’s hard to pinpoint just one thing. There were a lot of different things that were difficult about being on the show, like being away from home. When you’re there, you’re not really with anyone, and you don’t have any of your stuff with you. None of your things that make you ‘you’, like your phone, your friends, your family, your support unit. You don’t have any of that with you when you’re taping the show, you’re just left to your own devices.’ Was it anything like you expected? ‘Derrick Barry and I had quite the journey’ Except for (fellow Drag Race alumni) Raven? ‘You know, I don’t really know Raven, we’re not really friends. She tweeted something a bit mean about me, I just responded in the way that I thought was appropriate. But I don’t hate her, we’re not enemies. We don’t really know each other.’ You’ve said on the show that RuPaul’s Drag Race inspired you to do drag. Which of the early contestants were especially inspiring to you? ‘Bebe Zahara Benet was really a big inspiration. I liked Bebe because she was the one on TV who kind of looks a little like me, doing what I want to do, and who dominated the contest. And Nina Flowers, because I hadn’t seen anyone doing drag the way she does it, so I was really impressed by her. I really like those two a lot.’ What was it like for you to watch the show as it aired? ‘It was exciting. I thought it was a little bit surreal, to be honest. But it was amazing to see what people said about me on the show. I was kind of surprised, because when we were taping the show I didn’t get to see any of that. It was also a shock, because I ‘There’s nothing like it. I have never experienced anything like it in my life, I can tell you that. It was a completely unique and new experience. When I talked to any of my friends who have done reality TVshows before, they all said that they’ve never done anything quite like this.’ I have to ask about Derrick Barry. Before the season started airing, Derrick posted the cast picture, with you cut off, with the hashtag #memorabledrag. [laughs] It was really interesting to watch the dynamic you two had on the show, and of course she’s appeared in your video for ‘Purse First’. So what is your relationship like now? ‘Derrick and I are friends. Derrick is probably one of my best friends from the show, actually. We text back and forth. We’ve certainly been on an emotional rollercoaster. You have to remember that once the show started airing, there was so much outside stuff coming in at us. People would come up to me and go ‘fuck Derrick Barry, right?’. So I hear that a few times, and I think to myself ‘yeah, maybe, fuck Derrick Barry’. But I actually like Derrick Barry, he’s such a good friend of mine. But we had quite the journey.’ 221 009
