VIETNAM: Aquaculture Update HANOI: New plan to increase the use of bio-technology in order to boost the aquaculture industry approved by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. According to the newspaper Vietnam News, the new plan calls for qualitative and quantitative improvements in seafood farming, disease treatment, aquatic feeds and processing to ensure the fisheries sector’s production will increase by 30 per cent over the next year. In 2006, total aquaculture production in Vietnam was 1.69 metric tons (MT), an annual increase of 16%, whereas shrimp production leaped to 355,000 MT and the Pangasius production reached 825,000 MT (2,2 times higher than 2005). A major objective in the new plan is to set up a network of small- and medium-sized bio-technology enterprises in all fields of aquatic product farming and processing, in order to establish a stable supply of large aquatic products with high quality breeds free from diseases and which is suitable to the environment. A close cooperation among research institutes such as Mekong Rice Research Institute, the Can Tho and An Giang universities, the Southern Fruits Research Institute and HCMC-based bio-technology research agencies and authorities from the Mekong Delta provinces which concentrate major aquaculture activities, is proposed by experts. Vietnam – a global aquaculture nation still unknown to Norwegian companies Vietnam is now the third largest fish producer in the world, both in terms of catches and aquaculture production. In particular, the country has managed to develop commercial volume production of shrimp, catfish and clams. But the output from marine fish farming has not developed at the same speed. The country is in need of more advanced technologies. According to experts, some problems have been identified as hindering factors: - Lack of documented technologies - Lack of stable seed supply - Lack of availability of skilled workers and production management - Diseases and insufficient knowledge of how to prevent them - Lack of market access - Lack of insurance - Lack of financing Nr. 12 - 2007 31.08.2007 The success of Norwegian fish farming in the sea can therefore certainly be advantages compared to other nations when entering the market. Innovation Norway Hanoi creates meeting places As an active promoter of Norwegian technologies and know-how, Innovation Norway Hanoi has repeatedly created meeting places to both Vietnamese and Norwegian companies/organisations in the Marine/Aquaculture sectors. For the second time Innovation Norway Hanoi this Summer organised a comprehensive marine study tour in Vietnam, aiming to exchange knowledge/ideas for future cooperation between Norwegian and Vietnamese companies in the marine sector. The Vietnamese participants in the marine study tour were policy makers from central and provincial levels, scientific communities, fish farmers, fish processors, fish traders and advisors to the sector. Participating companies included six representatives from Fiskeriforskning, Pharmaq, Akva Group, University of Bergen in conjunction with Fiskeriforskning and Innovation Norway in Bangkok. The study tour this year took place from June 9 until June 14 in Southern Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh city surroundings; and meetings with research institutes and policy makers. Nr. 12 - 2007 31.08.2007 Norwegian seminar attracted large audience A Norwegian seminar on "Sustainable Development of Fish farming and Optimization of Fish Surplus Utilization" at Vietfish 07 was organised and attracted a large group of Vietnamese audience from around 50 companies. Participating companies also took part in the Catfish conference, the first ever event for people around the world who are interested in the Vietnamese catfish. The companies responded that the outcome from the trip was very fruitful for them. For the coming year we will seek to attract a larger number of companies. Vietnamese delegates to AQUANOR 2007 As initial further steps, from August 13-17, a group of 4 Vietnamese delegates from the local authority, business community and research institutes were invited to take part in AQUANOR 2007 to learn about the Norwegian technologies and know-how and to explore business opportunities. The delegation had serious discussions with companies in marine feeds, byproducts, breeding and farming technologies. Together with Akva Group, we also arranged a wide-ranging study tour for the delegation. The tour went to two companies which are among the most professional and profitable of Norwegian fish farmers, processing companies Leroy Midnor and Hitramat. The trip to Norway has brought a comprehensive knowledge about the Norwegian aquaculture sector, and at the same time has revealed potential business opportunities for Norwegian technologies for the Vietnamese market in the marine farming. The Norwegian fish sector on its part should realize that the Vietnamese processing sub-sector offers great potential for subcontract cooperation for reprocessing of seafood, given its high skills and cheap labour, and international standards in hygiene and food safety. Financial Support to Search for Partner Innovation Norway Hanoi is now cooperating with the Innovation Norway offices in Trøndelag, Hordaland to bring more attention from Norwegian companies. The Innovation Norway Hanoi office has also recently launched a new program – the “Trade and Industry Program” which is a modified match making program providing some financial support to Norwegian companies wanting to find Vietnamese partners and vice versa. Participating companies from the study tour agreed that Norwegian companies must be more active in promoting themselves as well as their technologies and know-how internationally if they don’t want to be left behind other nations. At least in the Vietnamese market this will be essential for success.
