Mai mult, am extins observaţii anterioare (Bigand et al., 2005), care au arătat că nu există diferenţe semnificative între muzicieni şi non-muzicieni în ce priveşte emoţiilor induse de muzică. În plus, în contrast cu majoritatea studiilor anterioare, noi am utilizat ca şi stimuli piese muzicale întregi sau fragmente muzicale lungi, coerente din punct de vedere muzical şi dramatic, crescând astfel validitatea externă a rezultatelor obţinute. În ce priveşte mecanismele prin intermediul cărora muzica induce emoţii, din câte ştim până acum, studiul în care am manipulat empatia (studiul 4) este primul studiu care implică din punct de vedere cauzal empatia cognitivă în geneza emoţiilor muzicale şi susţine perspectiva conform căreia acest mecanism este o cale centrală prin care muzica induce emoţii. 34
