Fasting has become very popular in the<br />

health community lately, but it is a practice<br />

that has been around for thousands<br />

of years. It has been introduced into most<br />

religions, and almost always coincides<br />

with the moon calendar and changes of<br />

the season to help the body transition<br />

into a fasting state.<br />

There are a few types of different fasts<br />

(i.e. complete fast, juice fast, etc.), but in<br />

general, all these fasts help to detoxify<br />

the body. Fasting acts as a huge cleanser<br />

because the body does not have to work<br />

hard to digest food, rather it can concentrate<br />

all of its resources on expelling toxins<br />

that are stored in the tissues. This is<br />

why fasting is great for preserving your<br />

health, and can even help speed up the<br />

healing process for many ailments and<br />

conditions. If we look in Mother Nature,<br />

no animal will eat when they are sick,<br />

while humans will force themselves<br />

when they are ill.<br />

However, that being said, you must be<br />

very careful before starting a fasting regimen.<br />

You must know what you are doing<br />

and be aware of what to expect in terms<br />

of symptoms you can have during fasting.<br />

Many people can experience nausea,<br />

vomiting, weakness, and dizziness. Fasting<br />

can be very beneficial to your health,<br />

but if you don’t obey certain rules, it can<br />

do more harm than good. For example, if<br />

you plan to do a prolonged fast, there are<br />

very strict laws that you must adhere to<br />

(i.e. which foods need to be eliminated<br />

gradually before the fast; your regimen<br />

during the fast; which foods to slowly introduce<br />

back into your diet after fasting).<br />

This is why fasting should be done under<br />

the supervision of a health practitioner<br />

that is knowledgeable in this area and<br />

can guide you through the process.<br />

After you have done a few fasts under<br />

their guidance, you should be able to<br />

safely do it on your own!<br />

BENEFITS OF GINGER<br />

The medicinal uses of ginger have been known for at<br />

least 2,000 years in cultures all around the world. Although<br />

it originated in Asia, ginger is valued in India, the Middle<br />

East, Africa, and the Caribbean, among other regions.<br />

The most commonly used medicinal part of the plant is<br />

the rhizome, the root-like stem that grows underground.<br />

It’s a rich source of antioxidants including gingerols,<br />

shogaols, zingerones, and more. Ginger actually has<br />

broad-spectrum antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and<br />

anti-parasitic properties, to name just several of its more<br />

than 40 pharmacological actions.<br />

Today, health care professionals may recommend ginger<br />

to help prevent or treat nausea and vomiting from motion<br />

sickness, pregnancy, and cancer chemotherapy. It is<br />

also used to treat mild stomach upset, to reduce pain of<br />

osteoarthritis, and may even be used in heart disease.<br />

Ginger (like many natural plant compounds) is anti-inflammatory,<br />

which makes it a valuable tool for pain relief.<br />

In 2001, research showed that ginger oil helped reduce<br />

knee pain in people with osteoarthritis (http://www.ncbi.<br />

nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11710709). The pain-relieving potential<br />

of ginger appears to be far-reaching. Along with help<br />

for muscle and joint pain, ginger has been found to reduce<br />

the severity of migraine headaches as well as the<br />

migraine medication Sumatriptan – with fewer side effects.<br />

Here are some other health benefits ginger boasts:<br />

• Nausea and motion sickness: Ginger is well<br />

known for its ability to ease nausea, and it’s helpful<br />

for motion and sea sickness. Women suffering from<br />

morning sickness were given beverages with ginger<br />

during the first trimester of pregnancy, and when<br />

compared with women given a placebo, ginger alleviated<br />

the nausea in a large majority of the cases.<br />

• Diabetes complications: Studies show ginger may<br />

reduce urine protein levels, decrease water intake<br />

and urine output, and reverse proteinuria, which is<br />

kidney damage caused by too much protein in the<br />

urine. Ginger may also protect nerves in diabetics<br />

and lower blood fat levels.<br />

• Arthritis: A placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover<br />

study published in the journal Osteoarthritis<br />

Cartilage found patients with painful arthritis in the<br />

knee who were given ginger vs. a placebo experienced<br />

significantly less pain and loss of movement<br />

compared to those taking the placebo.<br />

• Cold and flu: Chinese medicine practitioners commonly<br />

prescribe ginger to treat symptoms of colds<br />

and flu. The root acts as an antihistamine and decongestant,<br />

two cold-easing effects that can help with<br />

symptoms.<br />

Ginger is susceptible to heat and oxygen, so handle<br />

carefully when using this herb and store in a cool, dry<br />

place or the crisper bin of the refrigerator for two to three<br />

weeks.<br />

To make a tea, shave the skin from a piece of fresh ginger,<br />

cut off a 2-inch chunk and slice it into 2 cups of water<br />

to simmer covered for 20 minutes. Remove the slices and<br />

pour into a mug and add honey and a squeeze of lemon.<br />

Eat the slices after drinking the tea. Drink up to three cups<br />

of tea per day, before meals.<br />

Ginger capsules or powder are also available. Take at<br />

least 2,000 milligrams three times or more per day with<br />

or without food.<br />

Do not take ginger with blood thinners without first consulting<br />

your health care provider. Ginger may also lower<br />

blood sugar and interact with blood pressure altering<br />

medications, so speak with your physician prior to using<br />

ginger if you take any medications.<br />

REASONS TO DRINK LEMON BALM TEA<br />

• Cold Sore Relief: Due to its anti-viral properties,<br />

lemon balm may help relieve cold sores caused by<br />

the herpes simplex virus! Researchers found (http://<br />

umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/lemon-balm)<br />

that individuals that applied lemon balm topically to<br />

their cold sores and genital sores experienced relief<br />

from their symptoms (i.e. itching, redness, swelling).<br />

The lemon balm also significantly sped up the<br />

healing process of both oral and genital sores!<br />

• Improved Memory: Lemon balm tea is believed<br />

to help improve cognitive functioning and reduce<br />

stress! This makes it the perfect tea to drink during<br />

exam season. Some studies suggest that lemon<br />

balm may even help improve memory and relieve<br />

anxiety in Alzheimer’s patients (http://www.ncbi.<br />

nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17173107).<br />

• Insomnia & Anxiety Relief: Lemon balm is a very<br />

calming herb that helps improve sleep and relieve<br />

stress. When combined with other herbs (i.e. valerian,<br />

hops, & chamomile), it becomes very effective<br />

at treating sleep disorders and reducing anxiety<br />

symptoms.<br />

• Grave’s Disease: This disease is a form of hyperthyroidism,<br />

which is when your thyroid gland produces<br />

an excess amount of thyroid hormone. This causes<br />

your metabolism to speed up, and possible symptoms<br />

include: anxiety; irritability; vision loss; bulging<br />

eyes; irregular heart beats; weight loss; hand tremors;<br />

reddening and thickening of the skin; etc. Lemon<br />

balm may be able to help promote proper thyroid<br />

hormone production and may be a viable treatment<br />

for overactive thyroids. Always check with your physician<br />

before starting any treatment with herbs, especially<br />

if you are on medication.<br />

***Note: Remember to always use loose-leaf tea<br />

instead of tea bags to get the best range of health<br />

benefits!<br />

ENERGY BOOSTING FOODS<br />

Are you trying to cut back on coffee and energy drinks,<br />

but finding it difficult to get through those mid-afternoon<br />

slumps without them? Here are 3 foods that you can eat<br />

instead to give you a natural energy boost to help you be<br />

more alert and get through the day!<br />

• Apples: Apples are a great energy-boosting goto<br />

food when you’re feeling the ‘slump’ at work.<br />

They’re packed with fiber, vitamin C, carbohydrates,<br />

anitoxidants, and natural sugars! Not only are they<br />

healthy for you, but apples will provide a supply of<br />

glucose to your brain and body to help keep you<br />

more alert. Some believe that apples are more effective<br />

than black coffee!<br />

• Green Tea: If you’re finding it especially difficult<br />

to cut your coffee habit, you may find it easier to<br />

switch to herbal teas before trying to go cold turkey<br />

on the caffeine. Green tea in particular is known<br />

for its energy boosting power; however, it still has<br />

a much lower dosage of caffeine than the average<br />

coffee cup. Green tea also contains many nutrients<br />

and antioxidants that help fight against cancer,<br />

protects against diabetes, prevents heart disease,<br />

keeps skin healthy, and even aids in weight loss!<br />

• Hummus + Red Pepper: This combination is great<br />

for an afternoon snack when you’re feeling sluggish.<br />

The high iron content in chickpeas helps boost your<br />

energy and helps stabilize blood sugar levels. Red<br />

peppers are rich in vitamin C and help aid in iron<br />

absorption, which makes it the perfect pairing with<br />

hummus.<br />

BROCCOLI APPLE SALAD<br />

Trying to get your kids to eat more broccoli at meal times? Mix it up with some fruits and a sweet<br />

dressing using this recipe! It’s the perfect blend of sweet, tart, and crunchy, and it’s healthy to boot.<br />

Ingredients:<br />

Salad:<br />

• 4 cups broccoli (cut off stems; chop heads into bite<br />

sized pieces)<br />

• 1 celery stalk (diced)<br />

• ½ cup dried cranberries<br />

• ½ raisins<br />

• ¼ walnuts (chopped)<br />

• ½ apple (chopped)<br />

Dressing:<br />

• ¾ raw mayo (find recipe below)<br />

• ¼ cup raw apple cider vinegar<br />

Raw Mayo:<br />

• ¾ cup water<br />

• 1½ macadamia nuts<br />

• 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar<br />

• 1 teaspoon fresh herbs (basil, oregano, or anything<br />

else you have on hand)<br />

• ½ teaspoon sea salt<br />

• A pinch of cayenne pepper<br />

• Add all raw mayo ingredients to your blender and<br />

blend until mixture reaches a smooth consistency.<br />

• ¼ cup unpasteurized honey (add more to taste)<br />

Instructions:<br />

1. Combine the broccoli, celery, cranberries, raisins, walnuts, and apple in a bowl.<br />

2. Stir raw mayo, honey, and apple cider vinegar in a separate bowl until fully combined to make the dressing.<br />

3. Pour the dressing on the salad, mix until evenly coated, and it’s ready to serve! ( Check out the original recipe<br />

Our daughter, Maggie, was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy<br />

when she was 17 months old, though we expected this diagnosis<br />

much sooner. In the four weeks that we’ve been here, Maggie<br />

and we have learned so much and she has accomplished<br />

amazing things. She can roll, sit and crawl – all the things that<br />

she tried her best to do before but not properly. She can now<br />

transition from the floor to sitting, to being on her knees, to<br />

stand and she is even taking steps with very little support both<br />

with and without a walker. We were told to get a wheelchair<br />

before we came! Overall, we can’t say enough about Natan<br />

and the staff here at Health in Motion. From functional rehabilitation,<br />

to massages, communication and diet advice, they have<br />

it all covered. We’re so grateful God led us here to support our<br />
