Fasting has become very popular in the
health community lately, but it is a practice
that has been around for thousands
of years. It has been introduced into most
religions, and almost always coincides
with the moon calendar and changes of
the season to help the body transition
into a fasting state.
There are a few types of different fasts
(i.e. complete fast, juice fast, etc.), but in
general, all these fasts help to detoxify
the body. Fasting acts as a huge cleanser
because the body does not have to work
hard to digest food, rather it can concentrate
all of its resources on expelling toxins
that are stored in the tissues. This is
why fasting is great for preserving your
health, and can even help speed up the
healing process for many ailments and
conditions. If we look in Mother Nature,
no animal will eat when they are sick,
while humans will force themselves
when they are ill.
However, that being said, you must be
very careful before starting a fasting regimen.
You must know what you are doing
and be aware of what to expect in terms
of symptoms you can have during fasting.
Many people can experience nausea,
vomiting, weakness, and dizziness. Fasting
can be very beneficial to your health,
but if you don’t obey certain rules, it can
do more harm than good. For example, if
you plan to do a prolonged fast, there are
very strict laws that you must adhere to
(i.e. which foods need to be eliminated
gradually before the fast; your regimen
during the fast; which foods to slowly introduce
back into your diet after fasting).
This is why fasting should be done under
the supervision of a health practitioner
that is knowledgeable in this area and
can guide you through the process.
After you have done a few fasts under
their guidance, you should be able to
safely do it on your own!
BENEFITS OF GINGER
The medicinal uses of ginger have been known for at
least 2,000 years in cultures all around the world. Although
it originated in Asia, ginger is valued in India, the Middle
East, Africa, and the Caribbean, among other regions.
The most commonly used medicinal part of the plant is
the rhizome, the root-like stem that grows underground.
It’s a rich source of antioxidants including gingerols,
shogaols, zingerones, and more. Ginger actually has
broad-spectrum antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and
anti-parasitic properties, to name just several of its more
than 40 pharmacological actions.
Today, health care professionals may recommend ginger
to help prevent or treat nausea and vomiting from motion
sickness, pregnancy, and cancer chemotherapy. It is
also used to treat mild stomach upset, to reduce pain of
osteoarthritis, and may even be used in heart disease.
Ginger (like many natural plant compounds) is anti-inflammatory,
which makes it a valuable tool for pain relief.
In 2001, research showed that ginger oil helped reduce
knee pain in people with osteoarthritis (http://www.ncbi.
nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11710709). The pain-relieving potential
of ginger appears to be far-reaching. Along with help
for muscle and joint pain, ginger has been found to reduce
the severity of migraine headaches as well as the
migraine medication Sumatriptan – with fewer side effects.
Here are some other health benefits ginger boasts:
• Nausea and motion sickness: Ginger is well
known for its ability to ease nausea, and it’s helpful
for motion and sea sickness. Women suffering from
morning sickness were given beverages with ginger
during the first trimester of pregnancy, and when
compared with women given a placebo, ginger alleviated
the nausea in a large majority of the cases.
• Diabetes complications: Studies show ginger may
reduce urine protein levels, decrease water intake
and urine output, and reverse proteinuria, which is
kidney damage caused by too much protein in the
urine. Ginger may also protect nerves in diabetics
and lower blood fat levels.
• Arthritis: A placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover
study published in the journal Osteoarthritis
Cartilage found patients with painful arthritis in the
knee who were given ginger vs. a placebo experienced
significantly less pain and loss of movement
compared to those taking the placebo.
• Cold and flu: Chinese medicine practitioners commonly
prescribe ginger to treat symptoms of colds
and flu. The root acts as an antihistamine and decongestant,
two cold-easing effects that can help with
symptoms.
Ginger is susceptible to heat and oxygen, so handle
carefully when using this herb and store in a cool, dry
place or the crisper bin of the refrigerator for two to three
weeks.
To make a tea, shave the skin from a piece of fresh ginger,
cut off a 2-inch chunk and slice it into 2 cups of water
to simmer covered for 20 minutes. Remove the slices and
pour into a mug and add honey and a squeeze of lemon.
Eat the slices after drinking the tea. Drink up to three cups
of tea per day, before meals.
Ginger capsules or powder are also available. Take at
least 2,000 milligrams three times or more per day with
or without food.
Do not take ginger with blood thinners without first consulting
your health care provider. Ginger may also lower
blood sugar and interact with blood pressure altering
medications, so speak with your physician prior to using
ginger if you take any medications.
REASONS TO DRINK LEMON BALM TEA
• Cold Sore Relief: Due to its anti-viral properties,
lemon balm may help relieve cold sores caused by
the herpes simplex virus! Researchers found (http://
umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/lemon-balm)
that individuals that applied lemon balm topically to
their cold sores and genital sores experienced relief
from their symptoms (i.e. itching, redness, swelling).
The lemon balm also significantly sped up the
healing process of both oral and genital sores!
• Improved Memory: Lemon balm tea is believed
to help improve cognitive functioning and reduce
stress! This makes it the perfect tea to drink during
exam season. Some studies suggest that lemon
balm may even help improve memory and relieve
anxiety in Alzheimer’s patients (http://www.ncbi.
nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17173107).
• Insomnia & Anxiety Relief: Lemon balm is a very
calming herb that helps improve sleep and relieve
stress. When combined with other herbs (i.e. valerian,
hops, & chamomile), it becomes very effective
at treating sleep disorders and reducing anxiety
symptoms.
• Grave’s Disease: This disease is a form of hyperthyroidism,
which is when your thyroid gland produces
an excess amount of thyroid hormone. This causes
your metabolism to speed up, and possible symptoms
include: anxiety; irritability; vision loss; bulging
eyes; irregular heart beats; weight loss; hand tremors;
reddening and thickening of the skin; etc. Lemon
balm may be able to help promote proper thyroid
hormone production and may be a viable treatment
for overactive thyroids. Always check with your physician
before starting any treatment with herbs, especially
if you are on medication.
***Note: Remember to always use loose-leaf tea
instead of tea bags to get the best range of health
benefits!
ENERGY BOOSTING FOODS
Are you trying to cut back on coffee and energy drinks,
but finding it difficult to get through those mid-afternoon
slumps without them? Here are 3 foods that you can eat
instead to give you a natural energy boost to help you be
more alert and get through the day!
• Apples: Apples are a great energy-boosting goto
food when you’re feeling the ‘slump’ at work.
They’re packed with fiber, vitamin C, carbohydrates,
anitoxidants, and natural sugars! Not only are they
healthy for you, but apples will provide a supply of
glucose to your brain and body to help keep you
more alert. Some believe that apples are more effective
than black coffee!
• Green Tea: If you’re finding it especially difficult
to cut your coffee habit, you may find it easier to
switch to herbal teas before trying to go cold turkey
on the caffeine. Green tea in particular is known
for its energy boosting power; however, it still has
a much lower dosage of caffeine than the average
coffee cup. Green tea also contains many nutrients
and antioxidants that help fight against cancer,
protects against diabetes, prevents heart disease,
keeps skin healthy, and even aids in weight loss!
• Hummus + Red Pepper: This combination is great
for an afternoon snack when you’re feeling sluggish.
The high iron content in chickpeas helps boost your
energy and helps stabilize blood sugar levels. Red
peppers are rich in vitamin C and help aid in iron
absorption, which makes it the perfect pairing with
hummus.
Our daughter, Maggie, was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy
when she was 17 months old, though we expected this diagnosis
much sooner. In the four weeks that we’ve been here, Maggie
and we have learned so much and she has accomplished
amazing things. She can roll, sit and crawl – all the things that
she tried her best to do before but not properly. She can now
transition from the floor to sitting, to being on her knees, to
stand and she is even taking steps with very little support both
with and without a walker. We were told to get a wheelchair
before we came! Overall, we can’t say enough about Natan
and the staff here at Health in Motion. From functional rehabilitation,
to massages, communication and diet advice, they have
it all covered. We’re so grateful God led us here to support our
little Maggie. Thank you so much!
