As the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO)
celebrates its seventy-fifth anniversary, its
mission to enrich lives through orchestral
experiences that are uncompromising in
their excellence and inclusive in their appeal,
places the RPO at the forefront of
music-making in the UK and internationally.
Typically performing approximately 200
concerts each season and with a worldwide
audience of more than half-a-million people,
the Orchestra embraces a broad repertoire
that enables it to reach the most diverse audience
of any British symphony orchestra.
Whilst artistic integrity remains paramount,
the RPO is unafraid to push boundaries and
is equally at home recording video game,
film and television soundtracks and working
with pop stars, as it is performing the
great symphonic repertoire.
The RPO collaborates with the most inspiring
artists and was thrilled to welcome
Vasily Petrenko as its new Music Director
in August 2021. His appointment stands
as a major landmark in the Orchestra’s history,
signalling its determination to broaden
the audience for orchestral music while enhancing
its reputation as one of the world’s
most versatile ensembles. Vasily Petrenko
made his debut with the RPO at London’s
Royal Albert Hall in March 2016 delivering
a powerful interpretation of Mahler’s Symphony
No.2, ‘Resurrection’. His rapport with
the Orchestra’s players has been reaffirmed
with subsequent London performances,
and forthcoming plans include a series of
Mahler’s choral symphonies at the Royal
Albert Hall, the great works of English composers
at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival
Hall, and tours to Germany and leading
European festivals. Vasily Petrenko joins
a roster of titled conductors that includes
Pinchas Zukerman (Principal Guest Conductor),
Alexander Shelley (Principal Associate
Conductor) and Grzegorz Nowak (Permanent
Associate Conductor).
In addition to the Orchestra’s annual
season of concerts in London’s Royal Albert
Hall, Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall
and its home Cadogan Hall, the RPO is a respected
cultural ambassador and enjoys a
busy schedule of international touring, performing
in the world’s great concerts halls
and at prestigious international festivals.
The RPO is recognised as being the
UK’s most in-demand orchestra, an accolade
that would have pleased Sir Thomas
Beecham, who founded the RPO in 1946.
His mission was to lead a vital revival of
UK orchestras after World War II and form
an ensemble that comprised the finest musicians
in the country. The Orchestra has
since attracted a glittering list of principal
conductors, including Rudolf Kempe, Antal
Doráti, Walter Weller, André Previn, Vladimir
Ashkenazy, Yuri Temirkanov, Daniele Gatti
and Charles Dutoit.
The RPO aims to place orchestral music
at the heart of contemporary society,
collaborating with creative partners to foster
a deeper engagement with communities
to ensure that live orchestral music is
accessible to as inclusive and diverse an
audience as possible. To achieve this, in
1993 the Orchestra launched RPO Resound,
which has grown to become the most
innovative and respected orchestral community
and education programme in the UK
and internationally.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has
always been entrepreneurial and in 1986 it
was the first UK orchestra to launch its own
record label. The RPO has gone on to embrace
advances in digital technology and
now achieves nearly thirty million downloads
of its recorded music each year. The
Orchestra is increasingly active online (rpo.
co.uk) and on social media (@rpoonline)
providing audiences with the opportunity to
engage with the RPO and enjoy ‘behind-thescenes’
insights.
Passion, versatility and uncompromising
artistic standards are the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra’s hallmarks, and as it looks
forward to an exciting future with its new
Music Director, Vasily Petrenko, it will continue
to be recognised as one of the world’s
most open-minded, forward-thinking and
accessible symphony orchestras.
NOTES ON THE PROGRAM
By Julian Haylock
Four Sea Interludes from
Peter Grimes, Op.33a (1945)
Benjamin Britten (1913–1976)
I. Dawn—
II. Sunday Morning—
III. Moonlight—
IV. Storm
Benjamin Britten excelled at virtually anything
he turned his hand to. He was a virtuoso
pianist of profound interpretative insight,
an inspirational conductor, a natural
recording artist capable of exciting in the
studio the same electricity that characterised
his live concerts—and the possessor of
an exalted creative gift.
Britten spent the early part of the Second
World War in North America, where his
intimate friendship with the great British
tenor Peter Pears blossomed. Returning to
England in 1942—he composed both the
Hymn to St. Cecilia and Ceremony of Carols
during the return voyage—Britten was
exempted from military service as a conscientious
objector. It was during his time
in America that the desperately homesick
composer came across a magazine article
by E.M. Forster that began ‘To think of Crabbe
is to think of England’. This was a reference
to the writer George Crabbe whose
poem Peter Grimes (part of an 1810 collec-
Benjamin Britten
tion entitled The Borough), inspired Britten
to compose one of the finest operas of the
twentieth century.
Peter Grimes is a work of such astonishing
maturity and profound emotional resource
that it is easy to overlook the fact
that Britten was still only thirty-one years of
age at the time of its 1945 premiere. The
parallels between the central figure, a roughand-ready
Suffolk fisherman vilified by an
uncomprehending society when his apprentice
is lost at sea, and Britten’s view of his
own station in life are startlingly realised.
Desperate to raise the money to marry Ellen
and in his rush to avoid a party of aggressive
villagers, Grimes later finds himself responsible
for the accidental death of a second
boy, goes mad and commits suicide.
Keen to promote his latest masterpiece,
Britten extracted four orchestral interludes
that punctuate the main action of the opera,
and conducted the first performance at the
Cheltenham Festival on 13 June 1945, just
six days after the opera’s premiere at the
Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London.
The mist-laden stirrings of a new dawn
are magically conjured up by Britten, the
slowly illuminated seascape serving as a
bleak backdrop to the early-morning fisherman
gathering their nets. The French horns
announce the second section, a peaceful
evocation of a village Sunday morning as
everyone makes their way to church. The
music moves almost imperceptibly on to
the same scene lit by moonlight, the magical
scoring for bassoons, French horns and
strings creating an indelible impression of
stillness before the storm breaks, throwing
the raging sea into utter turmoil, punctuated
by torrential outbursts from the brass
and French horns.
Piano Concerto No.1 in
B-flat Minor, Op.23 (1874)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893)
I. Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso—
Allegro con spirito
II. Andante semplice
III. Allegro con fuoco
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky spent most of his
life attempting to reconcile the scorching
inspiration and confidence of his finest music
with a sensitive nature overwhelmed by
insecurity and anxiety. His emotional intuitiveness
was to prove both a blessing and
a curse, for while it helped facilitate some
of the most treasurable music of the Romantic
era, the lukewarm and occasionally
downright hostile reception that greeted
many of his finest scores often resulted in
periods of creative paralysis.
He was constantly plagued by selfdoubts
about his music’s true worth. Time
and time again his correspondence reveals
the repeated cycle of surging confidence
during the composition period—‘this will
e my greatest work so far’—followed by a
corresponding dip in mood during which he
would invariably insist that his talent had
‘dried up’, or that he was ‘played out’.
Tchaikovsky began work on his B-flat
minor Piano Concerto in November 1874
and, fired by a seemingly unstoppable flow
of blinding inspiration, had it completed
within the month. Understandably excited
by his new creation, he played it through to
his friend, the distinguished pianist and pedagogue
Nikolai Rubinstein (the Concerto’s
intended dedicatee), who promptly tore the
score to shreds: ‘It appeared that my concerto
was worthless,’ ranted Tchaikovsky,
‘that it was unplayable, that the passagework
was so commonplace, unskilfully written
and awkward that it would be impossible
to put it right; that the composition itself
was bad and trivial; that I had stolen this bit
from here and that bit from there; that were
only two or three pages worth keeping, and
that the rest would have to be scrapped or
completely rewritten.’ To his eternal credit,
Tchaikovsky changed not one single note.
The Concerto was eventually premiered
in Boston, and such was its resounding success
that even Rubinstein quickly admitted
his initial error of judgement, and played
no small part in establishing Tchaikovsky’s
early reputation by taking the work on a celebrated
world tour. In a letter to his patron,
Nadezhda von Meck, Tchaikovsky revealingly
summed up his thoughts on the Concerto:
‘It is a struggle between two forces
of equal standing... a powerful orchestra,
commanding inexhaustible resources
of tone colour, against which the small,
inconspicuous, but intelligent opponent
pits its all and triumphs—provided the pianist
is talented!’
Edward Elgar’s output during the 1890s,
save for the delightful Serenade for Strings
(1892), was dominated by choral music, including
the two oratorios, The Black Knight,
and The Light of Life. Despite their relative
success, Elgar still urgently sought the recognition
that could only be won by an indisputable
masterpiece. In 1899 he effectively
hit the jackpot with his Variations on an
Original Theme ("Enigma"), the instant success
of which ensured that he went into the
new century an international celebrity.
The Variations are in effect a series of
character portraits dedicated ‘To my friends
pictured within’. Elgar began the work with
the most humorous of intentions: ‘I’ve written
what I think they [his friends] would
have written, if they were asses enough to
compose.’ Yet, as he later pointed out, he
‘continued in deep seriousness’. Not all is
deep introspection, however, as is hilariously
illustrated by Elgar's tone-deaf architect
friend’s valiant attempts at playing the
piano (Variation 7, Troyte Griffith), and his
fond portrait of George Robertson Sinclair’s
bulldog (Variation 11) as it falls in the River
Wye and scrambles to get back out again.
Hew David Steuart-Powell’s habit of running
his fingers over the piano keys as a prelude
to chamber music sessions with Elgar and
friends is also gently sent-up in Variation 2.
The more cryptic headings for each
variation were successfully decoded long
ago—the ravishing Nimrod variation (No.9),
for example, alludes to Elgar’s publisher at
Novello, August Jaeger (‘Jaeger’ in German
means ‘hunter’, hence the reference to the
Biblical ‘Nimrod’). Variation 13 is marked
purely with asterisks, and many now believe
that they refer to one Helen Weaver, a music
student to whom Elgar was once engaged
and utterly heartbroken at losing. Elgar
and his wife also make appearances at
opposite ends of the work: Variation 1 is
headed C.A.E. (Caroline Alice Elgar), and
the rip-roaring finale (Variation 14) E.D.U.
(Elgar himself).
Rather more perplexing is the ‘Enigma’
Edward Elgar
of the title which refers to a theme that apparently
forms a ‘silent counterpoint’ to
the one we actually hear at the beginning.
Auld lang syne and God Save the Queen are
particular favourites, although recent years
have witnessed a whole series of ingenious
solutions. Elgar himself left us almost totally
in the dark: ‘The Enigma I will not explain
—its “dark saying” must be left unguessed,
and I warn you that the apparent connexion
between the Variations and the Theme is often
of the slightest texture; further, through
and over the whole set, another and larger
theme “goes” but is not played.’
I
t was March 6, 2020 when we last gathered together at the Granada Theatre
and CAMA was presenting an historic concert in celebration of the 100th
anniversary of the first concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Santa
Barbara. It was a marvelous occasion—then the COVID‐19 pandemic hit only a few days
later and concerts state- and nationwide were cancelled.
Following the longest period of “dark stages”—19 months!—in CAMA's long history,
we were at last able to present a special performance by Les Violons du Roy with
mandolinist Avi Avital on October 19, 2021 at the Lobero Theatre. Not even World War II
had caused such a prolonged interruption of CAMA’s live performances. We were thrilled
that so many of our patrons were able to join us for the “welcome back” performance.
We are all so delighted to be back in our theaters, continuing CAMA's long tradition of
bringing the world’s finest classical artists to everyone in our community.
CAMA's Board of Directors and staff thank you all who have supported CAMA over these
past two years. Your heart-warming and generous support has enabled us to come
through the past many months carrying the bright torch of our mission to bring the
finest in classical music to our community. We are most sincerely grateful.
Avi Avital performing with Les Violons du Roy at the Lobero Theatre for CAMA ⫽ October 19, 2021
