Abstract
Climate change is increasingly becoming a hot topic for the skiing resorts in Sweden since in
the worst case scenario the snow season in the Swedish mountains in just a few decades could
be shortened by one or several months. Therefore, it may be in the interest of companies in
the ski industry to work on sustainable development within the company by taking an interest
in environmental issues and reducing the resorts negative impacts on the environment.
The report attempts to answer the questions: Where in the resort do environmental problems
arise? Is it possible to operate more environmentally friendly? Are there any benefits with an
environmental effort? What are the opportunities in the current situation?
Based on literature studies and contacts with staff at different skiing resorts, an environmental
investigation is presented with suggestions to strategies and methods to improve the
environmental management of the resorts.
The results show that environmental problems are different from resort to resort, depending
on the size and location. Ski resorts are assessed to either have no environmental scheme at
all, or have an environmental scheme that is not fully established in the company.
To improve the environmental situation, the report suggest an environmental investigation of
the resorts should be conducted of the resorts activities and to also implement an
environmental management system to structure and provide a foundation for more efficient
environmental activities. Thereafter a resort should use the technical solutions available on the
market today and make demands to suppliers to promote development.
