DOMESTIC GODS
or HOPELESS SLOBS
Are you a ‘domestic
God’ or a ‘hopeless
slob’ Do you help with
the domestic chores What do
you do, how much and how often
What about your parents, do they
share the work in the house equally
And what about your grandparents
Two sides of the coin
Some men and women seem to disagree on
who bears the heaviest burden at home.
A recent survey found that irish men spend
an average of seven hours a week vacuuming,
washing and ironing, and are more likely to
help their spouse with other domestic chores
than their European neighbours.
they do more mopping than Scandinavian
men, who rack up only five hours of domestic
chores a week, and over twice the amount of
Eastern European men, who spend less than
three hours a week helping with housework.
However, irish women work even harder.
they spend a staggering 17 hours making sure
their homes are spic and span – despite the
reported help from their partners. And the
survey shows that across the entire continent,
women do at least twice as much housework
as men.
But the question is: Do irish men take the
overall responsibility to ensure the housework
gets done or are they still in the cave when it
comes to domestic chores
Below a man and a woman – both irish –
debate the issue that’s dividing the nation.
GODS – says Philip Nolan
We have definitely arrived in a new age, the
age of the Domestic God. No more can women
claim sole bragging rights on multi-tasking,
even if for many of them the talent appears
to stretch no further than being able to
drive, apply make-up and use a mobile phone
at the same time.
there are men, lots of men – ordinary
men like you and me – who wield their vacuum
cleaners like lances, as they declare war
on dust. And they can prepare a three-course
meal in less than an hour.
there appears to have been some surprise
at a survey showing that irish men are
more helpful around the house than any of
their European counterparts even though
this news will not come as a surprise to men
themselves.
While women still do more about the
house than men, we guys are catching up,
spending around seven hours a week on the
household chores.
it is, after all, only fair that if the burden
of actually paying for the house – and all the
costs that go along with it – has devolved from
being the sole responsibility of the traditional
breadwinner, then he in turn should take on
a share of the work within the home.
i think men should cook and women
should bake. i have no interest whatsoever in
making cakes or breads.
indeed, i think we use the pregnancy euphemism,
a bun in the oven, for a reason
– women seem to relish the idea of mixing
ingredients to give life to something perfect,
like a soufflé or brownie. it almost feels like a
surrogate birth.
Men, on the other hand, like to burn meat,
and – most of all – ignore the instruction
manual, casually glancing at a recipe before
trusting to intuition.
We had friends over this week and i prepared
a three-course meal and i did the washing-up
too, not, i add, because i had to, but
because i wanted.
i don’t see the big deal and clearly lots of
other men don’t either.
of course, women may scoff and say, these
are things we’ve known for generations.
