ABSTRACT<br />

The Turks started to settle in Rumelia since 1353. During this period lasting about<br />

500 years, the culture of Turks became permanent. The Turks and the other nations<br />

living in <strong>Balkan</strong>s li<strong>ve</strong>d together peacefully.<br />

Ottoman Empire, which had been constantly de<strong>ve</strong>loping and growing since the<br />

conquest of Rumelia, li<strong>ve</strong>d the period of the conquest of <strong>Balkan</strong>s and reached its largest<br />

boundaries. The period of withdrawal which began with the decline and fall of Ottoman<br />

Empire brought the migration problem.<br />

The mass immigrations from <strong>Balkan</strong>s to Anatolian started as a consequence of<br />

1787-1792 Ottoman –Russian War. The immigrations after 1877-1878 Ottoman- Russian<br />

War formed one of the most important chains of Turk’s immigration history.<br />

The second huge immigration came about after the oppressions during the <strong>Balkan</strong><br />

Wars at the beginning of the 20 th century. The committees were set up to sol<strong>ve</strong> the<br />

problems of the immigrants coming from Rumelia. For immigrants land was provided to<br />

settle and they were supported to build their houses. Besides, in order to lead a more<br />

comfortable life, they were exempted from taxes and military services. The hospitals<br />

were built because of the health problems. Having been provided with farming tools and<br />

seeds and all the other needs, they were encouraged to take part in production. The<br />

immigrations from Rumelia to Turkey continued after <strong>Balkan</strong> Wars.<br />
