commanders. At this election, the army commander (Beglerbegi) of that time, Sayf al-dîn
Ayaba, had the primary role. However, Sayf al-dîn Ayaba’s role and influence on Anatolian
Seljuk rule was not limited only with this. After getting most of the dignitaries and army
commanders under his influence and control, he also desired to establish his hegemony on the
entire Anatolian Seljuk administration. However, Sayf al-dîn Ayaba could not find an
easygoing and obedient character on the personage of ‘Alâ al-dîn Kayqubâd. Thus, the struggle
of hegemony that had started between the Sultan and the Beglerbegi and his team got
increasingly violent and in the end, came to a dangerous phase in which both sides tried to get
rid of each other. Sultan ‘Ala al-dîn Kayqubâd, acting faster on that matter, purged this power
that had formed in front of his hegemony and while saving his life and rulership, also secured
his administration in a safer and healthier structure.
