Table II shows the labour force participation rates of women and men. This table<br />

presents explicitly that participation of women into labour is considerably low. Interestingly,<br />

the gap between women’s and men’s labour force participation rates widens<br />

enormously in urban areas compared to rural areas. In parallel with the findings of<br />

Table II, Graphic I on unemployment and gender relation and Graphic II on gender<br />

related unemployment in non–agricultural sectors re<strong>ve</strong>al that women in Turkey experience<br />

a higher le<strong>ve</strong>l of unemployment than male counterparts. Especially in nonagricultural<br />

sectors, female unemployment rate surpasses male unemployment rate<br />

dramatically. Low unemployment rate among the women in Turkey is considered to<br />

represent “…a rare exception to the worldwide increase in female employment in<br />

that during the last two decades…” (Bugra and Yakut, 2010, p.518)<br />
