to many different areas of the brain. Another very unique study analyzed

if having background music affected group creativity in the workplace,

especially for generating ideas and brainstorming during work meetings.

It was found out that background music, especially upbeat tunes,

decreases judgemental behaviour during creative meetings and group

tasks, and inspires group members to share their unique perspectives, no

matter how different they are. It also simply increases the creative

outcomes from the group, perhaps related to the new ideas floating

around (Hosseini, 2019). There are some findings where individuals’

complex task performance is reduced with music, but this field requires a

lot more research, and with new tools such as fMRI technologies, it will

be much easier to see how music stimulates the human brain and affects

people.

One other important task of music is to shape people’s personalities,

and reflect it to those around them within the society. It’s been found that

“People who prefer certain styles of music tend to exhibit specific

personality traits”. Some personality traits such as empathizing with

others have connections to mellow but emotionally rich music, simply

indie-rock or country as well as folk music. People who are called

systemizers, however, they prefer complex and energetic music that is

upbeat and positive, such as house music and dance music (LA Times,

2021). This is perhaps related to how music creates our place within

society. Music is something that is done spontaneously by human beings,

without actually being affected by others. Even the choice of music we

have is not affected by other people, especially if we are listening to it

alone. Therefore, music, by using many human cognitive abilities and

communication functions, defines our social self, linking our experiences

with the artist.. Schulkin and Raglan (2014) even found out that human

beings’ social capability was increased by listening to music. The

research shows that people who listen to music more than others have a

more defined personality, with visible traits and have less problems

communicating with others around them. This is perhaps related to music

not only using the numeracy language but also spatial cognition and

analysis of a person’s place in society.
