In Jan., 2013, NTI learnedthe narwhal Integrated Fisheries ManagementPlan was approved by the NWMBand DFO Minister Keith Ashfield. Themanagement plan was developed by DFOin consultation with NTI, RWOs andHTOs in an attempt to establish a totalallowable harvest for narwhal thatrespects Inuit harvesting rights while promotingthe sustainable harvesting and tradeof narwhal. NTI played a major role in developingthe management plan over the lasttwo years. NTI believes the plan respectsInuit harvesting rights. The managementplan governs the harvest of narwhal inNunavut and will be implemented throughthe establishment of total allowable harvestsfrom the summering stocks of narwhal.Regional workshops were conducted inthe winter and spring of 2013, with the goalof putting the new system in place by thetime of the summer harvest.Struck and Loss WorkshopThe NWMB and the RWOs organized athree-day workshop in Mar., 2013, onstruck and loss of beluga, narwhal and walrusin Iqaluit. There were 12 Inuit huntersfrom three regions invited to attend theworkshop.
