leadership of His Highness the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Promoting the health of the Qatari people always comes into our focus. This
takes place at a time when the Qatari citizen is very open to the various fields
of science and knowledge, and getting access to the correct information has
become a difficult task. This is due to the false and misleading information
flooding our minds every day.
“It is crucial that all operations be performed by a highly
experienced and specialized surgeon in a specialized
multidisciplinary unit or center,” Al Emadi said.
“Sometimes I feel like I’m the fattest person
in the country. Dieting does not work and
there is never enough time to exercise. My
only way out is to cut off my stomach. That is
what I will do this summer,” Hamed said.
According to the March 2014, World
Obesity Report, Qatar ranks fourth in the
number of overweight and obese males
and first in the number of females, with 40
percent of the population overweight and
another 35 percent obese.
Bariatric surgeries are a part of the National
Social Health Insurance System (SEHA)
for obese Qatari nationals, according to the
Supreme Council of Health (SCH). Last year
Hamad Medical Corporation conducted
900 surgeries and over a thousand were
conducted in private hospitals.
Dr. Mohammed Al Emadi, chief bariatric
surgeon at Al Emadi Hospital, explains that
“surgical therapy should be considered for
individuals who have a body mass index
(BMI) of greater than 40 kg/m2 or have a
BMI greater than 35 kg/m2 with significant
co-morbidities and can show that dietary
attempts at weight control have been
ineffective.” He adds that fitness for both
surgery and anesthesia are also considered.
“It is crucial that all operations be
performed by a highly experienced and
specialized surgeon in a specialized
multidisciplinary unit or center,” Al Emadi
said.
Al Emadi graduated from Royal College
of Surgeons (Ireland). He founded Al Emadi
Hospital and is the chairman of the board of
directors, performing the highest number of
bariatric procedures in the Middle East.
Restrictive bariatric procedures, such as
the gastric banding and the gastric sleeve,
decrease the size of the stomach, which
makes the people who undergo the procedure
feel full with smaller amounts of food, while
still getting the nutrients. Malabsorption
surgeries limit the amount of nutrients a
body can absorb, as it removes or rearranges
the digestive system, but they are usually
performed with a restrictive procedure, such
a gastric bypass.
Yousef Mohammed, 21, underwent the
gastric sleeve operation a year and a half ago,
and he lost 55 kilograms. He chose to undergo
this surgery because he tried dieting and
exercising, but did not lose weight, he also
read about the procedure and said that he
found that it had no side effects. “I have more
confidence, as the change of my body and
the way I look allow me to do things I was
not able to do before, like wearing summer
clothes and playing,” said Yousef Mohammed.
The Supreme Council of Health (SCH)
issued National Guidelines on Weight
Loss Surgery in July 2014, which state that
operations should not be, “mere cosmetic
procedures, but should rather be only
performed for medical reasons.”
“In our center, we start with a
restrictive procedure, the Laparoscopic
Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), followed by a
malabsorptive procedure (Mini Gastric
Bypass) later, if necessary, as a revisional
procedure.” Al Emadi said.
In Qatar, the restrictive process of sleeve
gastrectomy is the most common procedure
performed, as it allows the body to still
absorb nutrients, unlike other procedures
that restrict food from the intestine. SEHA
does cover other forms of procedures as
Al Emadi explains that SEHA covers
primary surgeries that include, sleeve
gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass,
laparpscopic adjustable gastric banding,
gastric mini bypass, staged restrictive and
malabsorptive procedure, and the endoscopic
intragastric balloon. It also covers the
revisional surgeries of this list.
While some decide to undergo bariatric
surgeries to look better or to improve their
self-esteem, others go through it to deal with
everyday pain or to fight off chronic diseases.
Most patients who undergo weight loss
surgeries have a significant decrease in blood
pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Ali Mohammed, 37, started having
disturbed sleeping patterns in 2011, due to
juggling marriage, work and studying. Within
three years, he gained over 30 kilos. Then, he
started getting skin abscess and underwent
seven operations to remove the large ones
as they appeared. After his sixth surgery,
doctors discovered that he was diabetic.
Due to the lowered immune system,
many overweight diabetics suffer from
skin abscesses, which is a condition where
the skin gets inflamed as the body fights
off bacteria trapped under skin folds. This
inflammation is caused by the body fighting
off these bacteria. Dead cells and hair follicles
gather around as well, causing pressure on
the skin thus causing pain.
Ali Mohammed underwent the gastric
sleeve operation eleven months ago and
has stopped getting the large abscesses. He
According to the SCH,
16.7 PERCENT
of the Qatari population is
diabetic, so its 2014 Strategic Plan
places special focus on raising
awareness, providing proper care
and decreasing the amount of
obese people by three percent,
which will help in decreasing the
numbers of diabetics.
“I now eat because
it is an obligation,
and I have to remind
myself to drink.”
has also become more energetic, yet he has
lost the feeling of hunger and thirst. “I now
eat because it is an obligation, and I have to
remind myself to drink.” He explains that
these eating habits cause constipation, which
leads to severe cases of hemorrhoids.
El Emadi says that there are a number
of risks a person should consider before
undergoing a bariatric surgery. While
some face non-specific perioperative
complications, the instances of these
complications can be decreased through
the use of Low Molecular Weight Heparin
LMWH prophylaxis, which are anticoagulant
medications. Others suffer from surgery
specific complications, such as nausea,
malnutrition and excess skin.
6
HEALTH AND LIFE
G.H., 21, is a female student who also
underwent a gastric sleeve procedure in
Qatar. She had the surgery in 2013 and lost a
total of 25 kilograms.
After the surgery, G.H. realized that there
were side effects on her studies, “I am
always sleepy. I can’t study and I have no
concentration,” and on her health, “I am still
suffering from stomach burns when I eat
certain food, such as spicy food, and I have to
take vitamins to maintain my performance."
Al Emadi explains that there are
contradictions that should be considered
before undergoing bariatric surgeries.
“They include, but are not limited to,
unacceptable risk of cardiac complications,
poor myocardial reserve, significant chronic
obstructive airways disease or respiratory
dysfunction, non-compliance of medical
treatment, significant psychological
disorders, or significant eating disorders,” he
said.
There are also a risks of complications
that need to be considered by the specialized
multidisciplinary team and understood by
the patient before undergoing the surgery.
“Bariatric surgery carries the potential for
serious complications, morbidity and possible
mortality,” El Emadi said.
While bariatric surgeries may help some
people overcome health issues, such as
obesity and type two diabetes, it may not
be for everyone. People should consult
with a physician first to discuss the weight
loss options that are most suitable for their
specific health conditions.

SUMMER FEATURE
Is my Child Safe in the Sun?
SMART PARENTING
IN THE SUN
With summer approaching many parents are planning "fun in the sun" events,
where children can get their dose of vitamin D. Parents usually bring along
sun block with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30, because they care for
their children’s safety. Seldom do they realize that that is not enough.
8
HEALTH AND LIFE
Do not forget to protect your child’s eyes. This can be achieved through
wearing a hat as well. Better yet, buy your child a pair sunglasses that
have a UV absorption of 400 nanometers or more. Of course sunglasses
are more suitable for older children, who agree to keep them on.
Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of all
cancers worldwide and the number of cases
continues to rise. According to the Qatar Supreme
Council of Health, the sun has become
the fifth largest cause of cancer amongst
Qatari citizens and residents. An increasingly
cosmopolitan population is flocking to the
beaches despite scientific evidence that radiation
burns the skin and causes cancer. The
depleted ozone layer no longer protects us as
it did when our parents were growing up.
A moderate amount of sunshine is good
for growing children who have a right to be
outside in fresh air. By taking the right precautions,
they can enjoy the sunshine without
the risks.
› Getting the Right
Amount of Sunshine
Our bodies need an optimum amount of
sunshine to produce Vitamin D. This helps
them extract calcium and phosphorous from
food and build healthy bones. We can also
get Vitamin D from meat, eggs and oily fish.
However, it is even healthier for kids to be
outside playing in fresh air for short periods.
The optimum amount of time to expose
them to sunshine depends on their
complexion. While 10 to 15 minutes without
sunscreen is sufficient for light-skinned
people, those with dark complexions can
tolerate 20 to 30 minutes. The best advice
is to follow common sense. If your child’s
skin feels hot when you touch it, goes red or
becomes sensitive then you are over-doing
things and you should cut back on time spent
in the sun.
Modest exposure without burning skin
builds melanin, the skin’s natural defense.
Protect your children from over-exposure
to sunlight especially between 10 a.m. and 4
p.m. when the sun is high up in the sky.
Remember that ultraviolet radiation is
present even on cloudy days when you cannot
see the sun. If in any doubt, apply sunscreen
and protective clothing. Sunscreen should be
at least 30 SPF, and clothing should be tightly
woven, long sleeved and not see-through. If
you can see through the clothing, then the
rays can go through it. Nowadays many stores
offer clothing and swimwear that is 50 SPF or
more. Make sure your child wears a hat or sits
in a shaded area if you are out in the sun for
long periods of time.
Do not forget to protect your child’s eyes.
This can be achieved through wearing a
hat as well. Better yet, buy your child a pair
sunglasses that have a UV absorption of 400
nanometers or more. Of course sunglasses are
more suitable for older children, who agree to
keep them on.
› How to Know if Your
Children Got too Much Sun
Sunburn kills the cells directly beneath the
skin just like any other first-degree burn. The
immune system responds to the attack by
directing more blood to the affected area, and
opening up tiny blood vessels so white blood
cells can gain access and remove the damage.
Blood is warm. This is the heat you feel when
you touch sunburned skin.
› The Longer-Term
Effects of Sunburn
The sun gives off ultraviolet radiation that
causes sunburn and can damage living
human tissue. Excessive exposure over
lengthy periods is the leading cause of skin
deterioration that is often appears later in
life. Depletion of the protective ozone layer
in the atmosphere is admitting increased
amounts of ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
This means that what was trendy 20 to 30
years ago is not necessarily safe now.
› Recommended Sunscreens
Not every sunscreen in the market is what it
claims to be. In the latest Consumer Reports
annual sunscreen test, only seven out of 20
tested products passed their criteria and
earned a recommendation to be used.
“Consumers just need to be careful when
they buy sunscreen, that they are looking at
the labels and questioning the information
they are reading,” says Trisha Calvo,
Consumer Reports deputy editor.
Optimum amount of
time to expose them to
sunshine depends on their
complexion
10 - 15 MINUTES
without sunscreen is sufficient
for light-skinned people
20-30 MINUTES
without sunscreen is sufficient
for dark-skinned people
Protect your children from
over-exposure to sunlight
especially between
10 AM – 4 PM
30 SPF
Sunscreen should be at least
30 SPF, and clothing should be
PREVENTION
HOW TO SAVE
YOURSELF FROM THE
SUGAR
EPIDEMIC
Forget ebola and climate change; the biggest threat to your health is circulating
in your bloodstream right now. Do you know how much sugar is in YOUR blood?
A Sweet
Nightmare
Did you know that
mishandling your blood-sugar
could be making you FAT? It
may also make you age badly
and increase your risk of
depression and infertility.
Why isn’t there more attention directed to this? The truth is that there
are massive economic interests in the food industry, and they are
making money on your declining health. Sugar is added to almost
everything you might put in your mouth. It is a little known fact that
sugar is one of the most addictive substances to the human brain.
It used to be America that had the highest number of obese people,
but the Arab world is now taking the lead. A study published in 2014,
in Lancet, showed that that the Middle East and North Africa have the
highest rates of obesity in the entire world; among adults, 58
percent of men, and 65 percent of women are overweight or obese!
Obesity and type 2 diabetes are closely linked and the number of
people suffering from type 2 diabetes in Qatar has skyrocketed; in
2014, the number was 16.3 percent and it keeps rising.
So what is the link between a diet rich in sugar, obesity and
diabetes? It all starts with a complicated concept called insulin
resistance and the way to get there is a premium membership
on the sugar run-away train.
The Sugar
Run-Away Train
Carbohydrates from vegetables,
whole-wheat bread and brown rice
are broken down in the intestines.
They are then absorbed slowly into the
bloodstream, keeping your blood-sugar
steady, at an optimal level. Vegetables
should be a part of your everyday diet, as
the slow absorbing carbohydrates from
vegetables keeps your sugar
levels steady, your energy levels up
and keeps you satisfied for longer.
The Dark Tunnel
Before the introduction of highly processed food in our everyday
diet, type 2 diabetes was a disease of the elderly. The disease
is caused by the wearing out of the pancreatic functions and
laziness in the body’s response to insulin by the body’s cells.
However, soda, cakes, pasta, crisps and french fries
— all the stuff that you are bombarded with in advertising
and TV-commercials — make your body react VERY
differently. They make your blood-sugar peak, giving you
a 'high' resembling that of narcotics.
The blood sugar levels then drops fast, making your
energy levels crash. You feel weak and hungry, and the
craving for more sugary food is almost impossible to
withstand. Recognize the feeling?
When your diet is full of processed food and sugar, the
body is overwhelmed, and the blood-sugar levels quickly
rise. The changes that take place in type 2 diabetes are
a result of the body’s systems being on high alert all the
time.
So how does insulin resistance come into the picture?
Insulin resistance is a pre-stage of type 2 diabetes in
which the pancreas is exhausted from producing large
amounts of insulin and is not able to fully control the
blood-sugar levels. It is a strong warning sign that your
body is not coping well with your life-style.
11
SUMMER ISSUE 2015
The high blood-sugar levels resulting from a diet
combined with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
leads to sugar molecules attaching to — and damaging —
different structures in the body.
The damage caused by sugar-molecules to nerves and
blood vessels, causes numbness of the feet and damage
to the inner part of the eye.
It also speeds up the aging process in the skin. The risk
of heart attack and stroke increases and females with
insulin resistance may have difficulty getting pregnant.
DISEASE PREVENTION
Giving up Your Membership
Knowing that fast carbs, sodas and candy are bad for you are not enough. Sugar
is addictive and giving it up is a tough business. The blood-sugar peaks give your
brain instant satisfaction and the fast lows leave you craving more. The key lies
in understanding how the sugar run-away train is tricking your brain and to be
proactive when it comes to your food-choices.
Choose slow absorbing carbs
and combine them with healthy
fats and proteins that make you
more satisfied and slow down
the absorption of sugar from the
Don’t fill your plate with
them to a quarter of the plate.
Another quarter should be
reserved for good protein, and
Care for your muscles; they utilize
sugar from the blood and help keep
blood-sugar levels stabile. Spreading
exercise over the day is an option for
busy people. Morning gymnastics,
taking the stairs and playing with
the children goes a long way. An old
Chinese saying claims that walking 100
steps after every meal will make you
live to see your 99th birthday.
Avoid crash diets. They lower
the blood-sugar and deplete
the body’s carbohydrate-stores;
the craving for a quick fix in the
form of something sweet will be
almost impossible to withstand.
Moreover, crash-diets will
usually leave you even heavier
than before the diet.
To be sure to avoid those
blood-sugar lows. Don’t let
too much time pass between
meals. You should never skip
breakfast, and always plan for
a healthy snack between lunch
and dinner.
Giving up on bad sugar is not easy.
But, like any addiction, the first days and
weeks are the hardest. Keeping your
blood-sugar stable is the only way to
combat your sugar addiction. Start today,
and instead of living in fear of what your
next health exam might reveal, you will
soon be counting down pants sizes!
Have an emergency snack in
your bag for when the sugarcraving
hits you. Natural nuts
and a fruit are a good choice.
Boiled potatoes are a better
option than mashed or fried
potatoes, especially if you keep
the skin on.
Eat vegetables before
a meal rich in carbs.
It has been shown in
studies to keep the
blood-sugar stable.
Another tip is eating
fresh lemons or drinking water
with a teaspoon
of vinegar before a meal.
It makes the absorption of
carbs from the intestines
slower and your blood-sugar
levels more stable.
DISEASE PREVENTION
OSTEOPOROSIS
The woman merely bent down to pick a fallen stick, but then, she
couldn’t straighten up. Unexpectedly, a bone in her back had given way.
The pain was excruciating.
She had an extreme case of
osteoporosis, a disease in which
bones lack calcium and become
weaker, as well as more hollow
and fragile. Did you know that
osteoporosis can affect any
woman over the age of 50,
anywhere in the world? Men are
not spared either, especially if
they are in their seventies. And,
the worst part is that most people
don’t even know that they have
this silent disease, until it is too
late!
Osteoporosis is a health and
lifestyle problem that you may
already be familiar with. What
you may not have realized is that
osteoporosis is actually pretty
common. According to a recent
study in Qatar, the prevalence of
osteoporosis in postmenopausal
women was 12.3%. The good
news is that osteoporosis is to a
large degree preventable. I am
a physician and a grandmother
and this article is here to help
you prevent, or if need be, timely
treat osteoporosis.
SUMMER ISSUE 2015
Keep reading, we are going to tell you exactly
what you can do to prevent yourselves all this trouble.
Who is Most at Risk
of Osteoporosis?
What You Can Do by Yourself
The answer is simple — prevent
adopt the following four important basics:
01
Women over
fifty, of any
race.
05
02 03 04
All people
with a small
frame and low
bone mass
but especially
women over
50 who are of
Asian origin.
Men over
seventy and all
people with a
family history of
osteoporosis.
People who
smoke.
Those who take steroid medications for arthritis
or asthma or for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.
They should go for periodic bone density scans.
Why Must You Make an Effort?
It is important to make an effort, because the consequences of
osteoporosis can be horribly unpleasant and awful. Why go through
that when you can prevent it? Or, if you already have fragile hollow
bones and low bone density i.e., osteoporosis, you have treatment
options available, to increase the bone density or even lay new bone
when the bone loss is extraordinarily severe. You do not need to
despair, all you need is awareness . . . and action!
We all want and need to be functional in life or at the very least physically
independent. Who wants to become disabled or go through life in excruciating
pain, suffering with deformity? Why not take a few simple steps to
prevent or timely treat osteoporosis, right now? One of the complications and
corollaries of unmanaged osteoporosis can be unexpected fractures, which
are painful and disabling, and often require exorbitantly expensive treatments
down the road like hip replacement surgery.
Diet: rich in
calcium and
vitamin D.
Eat healthy
foods, that
are preferably
natural and
fresh.
Weight bearing
exercise, sports
and/or work.
Plenty of
sunshine.
Eat less salt, so you do
not lose in your urine,
the calcium that you
needed to maintain
stronger bones. What
is the relation? A diet
high in salt makes you
lose calcium, that is
definitely an added
drawback!
If an adult suffers a fracture, they might want to check if they are suffering from
osteoporosis.
How Much Calcium
and Vitamin D
Do You Need?
> Vitamin D, 600-800 international
units, for most adults.
> Breast feeding mothers and those
who are expecting, need 1000-
1200 IU of Vitamin D.
> Adults need at least 1000 mg of
Calcium daily.
> Women after menopause, nursing
and expecting mothers, and
adolescent girls, need about 1300
mg per day.
You should focus on a diet rich
in calcium, but supplements
are available if you need to
boost your intake
So, go ahead
plan and act!
Foods that
Help Prevent
Osteoporosis:
Fish particularly
cod, sardines,
salmon, and shrimp.
Liver.
Spinach has
both calcium and
magnesium.
Milk and
Yoghurt.
Egg yolks.
Mushrooms.
Fortified cereals and
orange juice.
HEALTH AND LIFE
The World
Health Authority
estimates that
nearly
10%
of the earth’s
population have
diabetes
2 Million
people die
each year from
this disease.
Type 1
Diabetes is an
autoimmune disease
that develops early in
life where the immune
system damages the
pancreas.
What Is Diabetes?
Type 2
Diabetes is
predominantly due
to over consumption
of sugar,
carbohydrates and
processed foods.
30%
In 2006,
the World Health
Survey exposed
diabetes as one
of the major
health challenges
for Qatar.
Nearly
30 percent
of Qataris over
45 years
of age have
diabetes.
Although the two
diseases share the
same name, they are
VERY different.
Type 1 diabetics need
to take insulin, usually
as an injection. Type 2
diabetics are usually
prescribed pills or
dietary changes to
manage their condition.
According to the
World Health
Organization,
90 percent
of diabetics
are in fact Type 2,
this means that they,
like many others,
may be eating far
too much sugar.
When you eat sugar,
your body responds
with the hormone insulin,
which helps absorb the
sugar providing you
with energy. Insulin
also directs the body to
convert any ‘spare’ sugar
to fat, which it stores all
over your body.
When you eat too
much sugar, especially
over a long period of
time, your body can
stop responding as it
should. This is called
insulin resistance, which
frequently leads to
diabetes. Most diabetes
medications focus on
the insulin resistance,
instead of looking
for root causes. Our
bodies were simply not
designed to consume a
lot of sugar and store it
in vast amounts as fat!
Every day more
people are diagnosed
with the disease but
it doesn’t have to be
this way. We explore
how Ramadan can
reduce YOUR risk of
developing diabetes.
Why Do We Eat
So Much Sugar?
Over 75 percent of processed
foods contain added sugar, even
when they don’t taste sweet.
It adds shelf-life and increases
your appetite. Sugar acts just like
a drug in the brain and makes us
crave more. The economics of
sugar are immense: add more
sugar, and people eat more,
vastly increasing profit.
Diabetes isn’t the only disease impacted by our
sugar-coated diet. Studies show sugar relates to
cancer, cardiovascular problems, Alzheimer’s
and many more modern ‘lifestyle diseases.’
FOOD & DIET
GENERAL
What Does Fasting Do?
Imagine racing around in your car, driving really fast, the engine
starts to overheat. What would be the first thing you do? Stop! Let
the engine rest and cool down. So, what do we need to do for the
body? Exactly the same thing; stop and rest!
If you have a diet high in refined sugars or a family history of diabetes, then a period of
fasting could help you regain control of your body. Fasting during Ramadan gives your body
a break from the high-sugar ‘grazing’ diet of fast food and snacking, reducing the number of
hours spent eating and changing the type of foods eaten. That can have a big impact.
What Does Sugar Do?
Your body is like an engine. When you
eat the correct ‘fuel’ for your bodyengine,
all is well. Fruit and vegetables
contain a little natural sugar, balanced
out with fiber and other nutrients.
Processed foods, however, have superconcentrated
refined sugars, simple
carbohydrates and starch with very
little fiber to balance out the effects.
When you eat the concentrated sugars in
processed foods, they make your body-engine
work REALLY hard. The sugar-fuel is so potent the
body doesn’t have time to react calmly; it panics and
releases LOADS of insulin to cope. This high dose
of insulin increases fat storage and you can rapidly
gain weight.
The body-engine is pretty amazing. It CAN
cope with super-charged-sugar fuel, but only
occasionally. Just like your car! You CAN drive
really fast, but if you ALWAYS drove really fast,
revving the engine as much as possible and racing
around, you would wear the engine out. It is the
same for your body.
When you eat more sugar than you need the insulin
tells your body to store it as fat. However, the body
doesn’t want to store all this fat, it has no choice.
Everything you eat has to go somewhere!
Your genetics, combined with your diet,
will help determine how much sugar can be
safely consumed and stored as fat, BEFORE
you risk developing diabetes.
Reduce Weight —
this links to MANY
positive health
effects, including
reduced diabetes
risk. You can lose
8 percent of your
weight during the
month of Ramadan.
How Does Fasting Help Me?
Reduce Insulin
Production
— giving the body
a well-deserved
break, releasing
stored fat.
Improve
Cholesterol
— 20 percent
reduction in
‘bad’ cholesterol
and 15 percent
increase in ‘good’
cholesterol.
Numerous health benefits
link to fasting. It is also a time of
spiritual and physical purification in
many religions. Specifically,
Ramadan can help you
01 02 03 04 05
Improve
Blood Sugar
Control — an
improvement
equivalent to
nearly 12 percent
in just one month.
Increase
Insulin
Sensitivity
— up to 20 percent
improvement in
insulin sensitivity.
To achieve the observed benefits, the pre-dawn SUHOOR meal should contain limited
carbohydrates and focus on proteins and fats to slow digestion and sustain you throughout the
day. After breaking the fast at IFTAR with dates and plenty of water, avoid the temptation to
binge, as you risk undoing the benefits this period of food modesty offers.
Don’t become
the next statistic
Type 2 diabetes is not random; it is not by
chance that you develop the disease. For
some people years of sugar abuse only
becomes apparent in later life, for others the
sugary side effects can start in childhood.
Your health is your responsibility.
What you choose to eat has a major
impact on YOUR body. Taking the time
to rethink your food strategy could
prevent you developing one of the
many lifestyle diseases killing society.
You CAN defeat diabetes and you can
keep your health into old age. What are
YOU going to eat tonight?
Disclaimer:
Type 1 and unstable Type 2 diabetics
are strongly advised to seek the council
of a doctor or diabetes professional
before they initiate any dietary change
to see if modifications to medications or
other precautions are warranted. Type
1 diabetes should not attempt fasting
without strict medical supervision.
AVOID
VITAMIN DEFICIENCY
THE WARNING SIGNS
Recent Studies have shown that 41 percent of Americans are deficient in
vitamin D and that up to 39 percent are low on B12.
In Qatar, more than half the Population maybe severely deficient in at least one vitamin. For
example, according to one study, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among Qatari
children (11-16 years) was (68.8%). Another study recorded its high prevalence among health
care professionals. Are YOU a silent sufferer of vitamin deficiency, and how could you tell?
Doctors practicing traditional Chinese
medicine are able to base a diagnosis on
the smell and appearance of a person
alone. Our inner well-being is often
reflected by our outer appearance, and a
diet lacking in essential nutrients will affect
your mood, as well as your looks. Although
there are no sure signs of vitamin deficiency,
the following can be an indicator that you
need to improve your diet or — as an end
resort — complement it with a vitamin pill:
But, if you are wondering about those white spots on your nails
you can stop worrying; they are not indicators of vitamin deficiency,
instead, they are caused by minor trauma against the nail-root.
Pale skin can indicate
anemia due to lack in
iron, vitamin B9 or B12.
20
HEALTH AND LIFE
Poor night vision
can be a sign of vitamin
A deficiency.
Frequent leg cramps
and a tingling
sensation in the feet
and toes could indicate a
vitamin B1 deficiency.
Cracked lips
can be a sign that
you need extra
B2 or B12.
Could You Be at Risk?
Although vitamin deficiency can cause serious illness and impact health
negatively, one needs to be aware of the fact that vitamin pills, like
pharmaceuticals, are a multimillion dollar industry. People who are not part of
the groups below should be able to cover their need by improving their diet.
The following groups should take extra care to get the nutrients they
need through a diet rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants; they
might also consider adding a vitamin supplement:
Pregnant women need
extra folic acid (also called
vitamin B9). They also
have an increased need
for the mineral iron which
can be found in green leafy
vegetables and meat.
People with low calorie
intake (under 2200 kcal
for men and under 1700 kcal
for women). A diet low on
calories needs to be packed
with vitamins; the lower the
quantity, the greater the
quality needs to be.
People with diseases
affecting the gastrointestinal
system
(for example celiac disease,
or inflammatory bowel
disease) have a high risk
of deficiency for various
vitamins.
Smokers need extra
vitamin C.
Vegans need extra B12,
since this vitamin is mainly
found in animal products.
Vitamin D is synthesized
in the skin with the help of
sunlight. Elderly people
and young children that
spend a lot of time indoors
need to get extra vitamin
D. This is also the case for
veiled women who don’t
expose their skin to the sun.
A Jar or the Plate?
The best way to get your vitamins is
through a diet dense in nutrients.
Fruit and vegetables contain
thousands of substances, such as
phytochemicals and antioxidants,
and can reduce your risk of cancer
and cardiovascular disease.
Vitamin pills should be viewed
as a supplement, rather than a
replacement; the health benefits
you get from a well balanced diet
can’t be gained from a pill.
Are your bones aching
in the morning? This
can be a sign of vitamin
D deficiency, the most
common vitamin deficiency
in developed societies.
NATURAL REMEDIES
Getting What You Need From Your Diet
Take a look at the vitamin-wheel. It’s a good tool for making sure you are not missing
out on essential nutrients. If you are part of any of the groups mentioned above, look for
foods that contain high amounts of the vitamin that you have an increased need of.
The following tips can help you
improve your health and avoid
vitamin deficiency:
Aim to eat fish two times a week.
Try to include fatty fish like salmon
that are high in vitamin D and
omega-3 fats.
The recommended five servings
of fruit and vegetables a day is
an absolute minimum. The higher
your intake of fruits and greens, the
lower your risk of being overweight,
or developing cancer, heart disease
and other health problems. Vary
your intake with vegetables and
fruits of different color. Peppers and
kiwi are especially rich in vitamin C;
blueberries and gojiberries contain
high amounts of antioxidants.
A way to get those goodies in, if
you’re not a fan of fruits and greens,
is to consume them in the form of
smoothies. Green leafy vegetables
such as kale and spinach (rich in
vitamin A, B, C and K as well as
calcium and iron) can be added to
a smoothie, for extra nutrition. Nuts
and seeds — that lower the glycemic
index and keep your blood sugar
stable — can also be added to a
smoothie.
Sneak them in: Put vegetable
sticks on the table to snack on before
mealtime. Also, try making a healthy
dip out of avocado or yogurt; this is a
super way to encourage children to
eat their greens.
Choose the right combinations.
For example foods rich in vitamin
C help aid in the absorption of iron,
while dairy products can make
absorption harder. Tomatoes and
avocados are another good combo.
Vitamin D is a hot topic in research
right now with studies indicating
a protective effect against type 2
diabetes, autoimmune diseases and
cardiovascular disease. Get some
time outdoors in the sunshine
every day to boost the production
of vitamin D and improve your mood.
The best investment in your
health is the choices
that you make at the dinner
table. Following a greener diet
will soon make a difference in
the way you feel and look.
Investing in Your Health
THE
Fruit and vegetables should make
multitude of natural antioxidants,
phytochemicals and vitamins
contained in fruits and greens
can’t be replaced by the high levels
of synthetic vitamins found in pills;
these should rather be viewed as a
supplement to a healthy diet.
The best investment in your health
a clear link between eating processed food and an
increased risk of depression.
How Big is the Problem?
More than 350 million people suffer from depression. If you experience
sadness, guilt or low self-worth, you are not alone. The condition brings with it
many symptoms, from a loss of pleasure in life, to feeling suicidal. Desperate to
improve the happiness of the planet, the World Health Organization has been
analyzing mental health all over the globe to find the source of the sadness.
What they found was quite surprising! Depression is a disease of affluence.
It was the RICHEST countries who were the MOST depressed.
So, is it money causing all the problems?
No! It was the poorest people in these rich countries who were suffering
morethe most. Confused? Don’t worry, the clever folk at Deakin University
figured it all out and now you can be in on the secrets to a happy life.
What they found was very clear: our diet
has changed dramatically but our genetics
have not.
We have evolved very little since we lived in
trees and caves. However, in the last 50 years
we have experienced unprecedented changes
in what we eat. The industrialization of
farming and food production means our food
is not like our ancestors’. Food processing
manufacturers preserve our food, by adding
extra chemicals and cheap sugars. This
increases the profit margin for food producers
and supermarkets, but WE are suffering the
costs.
Professor Felice Jacka
Western
Diet or
Wholesome
Diet
We Are What We Eat
Your body needs the right nutrients to function effectively.
Processed and packaged foods are convenient and cheap,
but they are lower in nutrients. Processing strips out all the
best bits which nature has carefully crafted.
Using high heat and pressure, combined with chemical catalysts, our food
has changed from something synthesized from plants, to products that no
longer resemble them at all. We are only nowjust starting to see the long
term impact of these high calorie and low nutrient foods which drive the vast
profits of the food and drink industries.
Food processingmanufacturers
preserves our food, withby adding
extra chemicals and cheap sugars.
This increases the profit margin for
food producers and supermarkets,
but WE are suffering the costs.
The researchers found that although
different countries once had very
different diets, there was one thing in
common. All the countries studied
that were found to have higher
rates of mental health problems,
consumed typical Western food
(processed and packaged) in
addition to their ‘natural’ diet.
The key factor in the risk of
depression and mental health isn’t
what you eat, but what you DO
NOT eat. Individuals who eat less
processed food have MUCH lower
rates of depression and mental
health problems.
Why Are We Eating so
Much Processed Food?
Most processed food
also has added sugar.
This tricks our brains and
makes the food actually
become addictive!
Our brains evolved methods to help our ancestors
survive food shortages: we experience ‘pleasure’
when we eat sweet foods. This makes us eat
more of them and store up the excess as fat. Most
people eating Western diets don’t experience
food shortages but our brains still operate the
same way.
Unfortunately the food industry knows this! Sugar
creates addiction which equates to profit. Just
have a look at some food labels yourself. Sugar is
listed under many different names to protect the
industry’s dirty little secret.
Professor Jacka publicly stated that processed
food is causing the decline in mental health. It is
addictive, heavily advertised, widely available,
quick and convenient. In many places, it is the
ONLY food that is available.
Can it be this simple?
YES! Until now, depression research
has been focused on treatments.
Medications can reduce symptoms but
they also have side effects and don’t
tackle the underlying problem.
The pharmaceutical industry makes
billions of dollars from mental health.
Nobody thought to investigate
our diet instead!
What Can I Do to
Prevent Depression?
THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE . . . .
…..FEED YOUR BRAIN!
By making dietary changes,
you can DRAMATICALLY reduce
your chances of suffering from immediate and
long-term mental health problems.
STEP #1
CUT OUT THE
JUNK!
Plants are nature’s medicine and are packed
full of nutrients and anti-oxidants which
repair the body. The fiber also helps keep
your gut healthy. Inflammation, due to leaky
gaps between cells in the gut, is a major
factor in many modern diseases.
Read labels and avoid heavily
processed foods. If you don’t
understand the name of an ingredient,
don’t eat it! Eat meals made from fresh
ingredients.
STEP #2
EAT MORE FRUIT
AND
VEGETABLES
Decide to be different!
If you want to feel happier and protect
your mental wellbeing, then you need to
make changes. Cutting out processed
foods, with hidden sugars, can improve
your mood and mental clarity in just a
couple of weeks. Why not recruit your
friends to support your new initiative?
Let’s all be happier together!
STEP #3
EAT MORE
HEALTHY FATS!
Your brain is made of fat. Avocados, nuts, seeds,
coconut and oily fish are all excellent sources of
healthy fats. Depression is also associated with a loss
of sex drive. Since hormones are made from fat, if
you want that loving feeling back, try a dish of fish and
avocado. It might not sound sexy, but trust me, it is!
Life doesn’t have to be depressing,
give yourself permission to be happy.
Maybe you are ready to even try it
now? Allow yourself to smile. Smile
with your mouth. Smile with your eyes.
Smile with your heart and the next time
you eat, smile at your food.
AGING - ANTIOXIDANTS AND AGING DIET
LOOK
FEEL
YOUNGER
MORE THAN JUST AN
ANTIOXIDANT DIET!
It’s important to embrace the natural
changes that occur as you age, but whether
you are still in your twenties, or knocking on
the eighties, there’s no need to look or feel
any older than you really are. Some of the
lifestyle choices we make on a daily basis
can lead to faster aging and put our body
at a disadvantage over time.
So what can you do to help protect yourself from
the aging process? It’s actually quite simple. Rather
than advising just another set diet, it involves an
all-around lifestyle that takes into account what
you eat and how you live. Let’s take a look.
26
HEALTH AND LIFE
The Natural Aging Process
Growing old is normal. Your cells start to slow down,
and the results show in the way your skin looks. You
start feeling more tired, and your organs begin to
function differently or cause problems.
Why does this happen?
A big factor that speeds up the process of aging is
free radicals. These are essentially oxygen atoms
in your body that have been changed and become
unbalanced. They then want to balance out again
and do so by stealing parts of other cells in your
body. Studies suggest that up to 5% of the total
oxygen intake has the ability to turn into free radicals
by forming a highly damaging superoxide radical via
electron escape. The problem is that the affected
cells often need the parts that were stolen from
them and don’t function as well without them. That is
when problems start to emerge in your body and, in
particular, you might notice signs of aging.
Where do free
radicals come from?
It’s natural for your body to have some free
radicals; you actually need some for your
body to function properly. It only becomes
a problem if there are too many.
They are made from the oxygen atoms in your
body from a range of different activities you might
do on a daily basis. Here are some things that may
cause free radicals in your body.
Growing old is normal.
our cells start to slow down
and the results show in the way
your skin looks, the way you feel
more tired and your organs may
begin to function differently or
cause problems.
> Smoking
> Alcohol consumption
> Exposure to sunlight
> Air pollution
> Stress
If these all lead to the production of free radicals
and set off the aging process, it makes sense to
avoid an excess of these things. Some of them
may be okay in small doses — it’s actually really
important to get some sunlight for a dose of
vitamin D — but when there’s too much, it damages
our cells and leads to faster aging.
Antioxidants
and Free Radicals
You might have heard about antioxidants
and the way they can hinder the aging
process. How exactly can they help?
Antioxidants work in the body by neutralizing
free radicals. This means that they stabilize the
unstable atoms, so they can’t cause any damage
to the cells in your body.
What type of foods contains antioxidants?
Fortunately for us, you can consume them
in your diet from a range of different fresh
ingredients.
Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, copper, zinc
and selenium are all important vitamins and
minerals that are antioxidants. It is possible to
get these from taking a dietary supplement, but
research shows that it is much better to include
them as a part of your natural diet.
Phytochemicals, which are natural compounds
that are found in plants, also play a major role.
These include:
> Lycopene in tomatoes
> Anthocyanin in cranberries
> Lutein in spinach and corn
AGING - ANTIOXIDANTS AND AGING DIET
ADVANCED GLYCOSYLATED END-PRODUCTS (AGES) AND
Different Cooking Methods
What you eat isn’t the only thing you need to worry about;
it’s also important to think about how you cook it.
A Guide
to Healthy
Eating
There are a lot of things to
consider when trying to consume
the best diet possible to help your
body stay young and fresh.
Here are a few vital steps
you can follow:
01
Aim to eat at least 5
servings of vegetables each
day (even more is better!)
02
Eat a variety of different
vegetables in your diet. The
more colorful your plate is,
the healthier it is because
it contains a spectrum of
phytochemicals!
Don’t overcook your
food or use
03
really high
temperatures. Sometimes
crunchy, raw vegetables are
a great option.
Make sure you drink plenty
of water
04
to stay hydrated.
A COMPLETE LIFESTYLE
APPROACH
In fact, a lot of recent evidence has
shown that the way you cook food
can reduce the intake of advanced
glycosylated products (AGEs),
which can lead to diabetes and
premature aging.
High levels of AGEs are found in many
processed foods that are high in fat and
sugar, as well as foods that come from
animals and are high in protein. Limiting
your intake of these foods can be good
step to reducing your AGE intake.
The amount of AGEs in food can
also increase substantially when the
food is cooked, particularly when
it is cooked with methods at high
temperatures like frying or baking.
This is why it can be a good idea to
cook foods rich in AGEs at lower
temperatures for a longer period of
time, for example with a slow cooker.
28
HEALTH AND LIFE
Focusing on your diet alone simply isn’t
enough to give your body the boost it
needs to fight off aging – both the way it
makes you look and feel.
Instead, a complete lifestyle approach is the best
way to combat age. The real secret is to follow your
instincts. You know what’s good for your body.
> Avoid or reduce your exposure to alcohol,
smoke, pollution and harmful sun-rays.
> Maintain a healthy work-life balance to
keep your stress levels in check.
> Eat foods that you know are good for you
— fresh produce is best.
> Opt for foods that contain antioxidants to
help control free radicals in your body.
> Avoid highly processed foods and those
with a lot of fat or sugar.
> Use cooking methods that help to
enhance the flavor of your food, without
changing their healthy properties.
In the end, it’s important to realize that aging is
natural; it will — and should — happen eventually.
But, the things you eat and how you live affect this
process, so it is possible for you to take control and
do the best for your body.

SLEEPING DISORDERS
THE MYSTERY OF SLEEP
Sleep and dreams have mystified humans throughout
time. In ancient Greek mythology, they were thought to be
delivered by the God Morpheus. Elsewhere in the world,
Native-Americans supposedly protected themselves from
nightmares by catching them in the web of dream-catchers.
Many cultures believe that dreams can be used to predict
the future or that they can be sent to you as a warning from
the spirit world. Some even say that the soul separates from
the body during night. Others believe that sleep is needed
because that is when the soul connects with God.
The benefits of night sleep are emphasized in the Quran
which also notes the importance of conforming to the
patterns of light and darkness. The Prophet Muhammad
(pbuh) promoted taking naps at mid-day which is a
common practice for many Muslims.
WHY DO
WE SLEEP?
The research and technology reached in this modern
day and age have not definitively explained why humans
need to sleep. But perhaps the key to understanding
why we sleep lies in observing what happens when we
do. During sleep the brain is highly active, although it
works in a different mode from that of being awake. The
sleeping person goes through 90 minute cycles of light
sleep, deep sleep and dream-sleep also known as rapid
eye movement (REM) sleep. Deep sleep is believed to
be essential for rejuvenating the body and dream-sleep
important to consolidate memories and processing
events that happened during the day. The brain also
has its own clock, the circadian clock, which tells the
body when it’s time to sleep. During the dark hours the
production of a hormone called melatonin increases,
which makes the person tired and sleepy.
SLEEPING TOO LITTLE,
SLEEPING TOO MUCH
Studies have shown that a good night’s sleep will improve
athletic and academic performance as well as the ability
to handle relationships. However, there is a large interindividual
variability in the need for sleep. During pregnancy,
for example, the need to sleep increases because of the
strain placed on the woman’s body as it builds a new life.
You might also have noticed an extra need for sleep when
you are sick, as it fuels the healing process.
Although a small percentage of individuals might get away
with fewer hours and yet feel fine, most persons will function
their best when they are getting the amount of sleep
recommended by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF):
04
EXERCISE
Exercising is good for the overall
health of the body and will increase
energy levels. Avoid exercising the
last couple of hours before going to
bed, as this can affect your ability to
relax and sleep.
05
DRUGS AND STIMULANTS
DRINKING
Try not to drink anything two hours
before bedtime to avoid getting
your sleep interrupted by the need
to visit the bathroom.
03
Alcohol, cigarettes and coffee are all things that
can disturb your sleep. If you can’t eliminate
them completely try cutting them out in the
evenings. Sleeping pills should only be used as
emergency help during short periods of time, as
they disturb the natural sleeping pattern.
NAPPING
Long naps late in the afternoon can
disturb the sleep pattern and create
difficulty falling asleep at night. Try to
keep naps short and ideally placed
around noon.
06
07
LIGHTING
08
09
NOISE
Try to eliminate noise in the sleeping
quarters. If this is not possible, invest
in earplugs or a fan that can help
drown disturbing sounds.
TIMING
By following the natural sleep rhythm
dictated by the circadian clock the body will
get optimal rest during its sleeping hours.
The body gets its most beneficial sleep, deep
sleep, between midnight and 2 a.m., so ideally
it is best to go to bed by10 p.m.
Light is an important factor that helps the body adjust the
circadian clock. Dimming the lights about an hour before
going to bed will send a signal to the brain that it’s time to
sleep. Try to avoid strong lights after bedtime, invest in a night
lamp for bathroom visits or to use when tending to young
children. Blue light, from cell phones and digital devices, can
disturb sleep and should not be kept in the bedroom.
10
PREPARATION
Organizing your activities for the next
day, packing your bag and putting
out the clothes to wear before going
to bed can help you relax and avoid
worrying about tomorrow.
12
REGULARITY
Make an effort to go to bed and
rise from sleep around the same
time every day. Keeping to the
same sleeping schedule both
working nights and weekends will
help combat the Monday morning
tiredness.
11
BEDROOM
The bedroom should only be used for sleeping,
not for watching TV, working or talking on the
phone. An important rule is to try leaving the stress
and worries of the day outside the bedroom. To
ensure the highest quality of sleep, the bedroom
should be kept cool as the body temperature drops
during sleep. Avoid having a digital clock next to
your bed as watching it can cause stress if you are
experiencing problems falling asleep.
POSITION
To avoid a stiff neck and tender
muscles, make sure your pillow
isn’t too large or too flat as this will
put strain on the neck. If you are
sleeping on the side, putting a pillow
between the legs can help alleviate
back pain.
PREGNANCY
HEALTH
STOP GESTATIONAL
DIABETES FROM
PREGNANCY
AFFECTING YOUR
Our bodies naturally produce a
Sharing your body with your baby, throughout pregnancy,
is an experience like no other. It is a tremendous
responsibility to make sure that they enter this world as
healthy as possible. Recently, more and more women are
experiencing symptoms of diabetes during pregnancy,
which can be harmful for both you and your baby.
Fortunately, it is actually quite easy to reduce
your risk of developing gestational diabetes,
and stop it from affecting your baby.
Let’s take a closer look at how.
What is
Gestational Diabetes?
Gestational Diabetes is when
a pregnant woman has symptoms
of diabetes, due to unnaturally
high levels of glucose in her
bloodstream. This happens to
3–10% of expectant mothers,
a number that continues to rise.
substance called insulin that helps
to control glucose levels. When you
eat a sugary snack, your body starts
to produce more insulin, to keep the
glucose levels in check. When you
haven’t eaten a meal for a while, the level
of insulin in your blood drops to keep
your glucose levels balanced.
The hormonal changes during
pregnancy, combined with a diet
high in sugar, can cause the insulin
in your body to stop controlling
your glucose properly. This can be
worrying as too much glucose in
your blood can lead to gestational
diabetes, and affect the health of
both you and your baby.
32
HEALTH AND LIFE
Here are some things
that put you at a higher
risk for getting diabetes
while you are pregnant:
Are you at Risk?
Some women are more likely to get gestational diabetes, while they
are pregnant, than others. This doesn’t mean that you will get it, just
that you should take care to try to prevent it and watch out for symptoms
so you can stop it from causing harm to your baby.
birth weight or a
stillbirth
If you think you might be at a higher risk, you should talk to your doctor about your concerns
and the possibility of being tested for gestational diabetes. It is better to know if you have it so
that you can make changes to protect the health of you and your baby!
What
harm can it
cause?
There are serious effects if you have
gestational diabetes, and it is not
managed properly.
For your baby, this can lead to a large birth
weight and other birth traumas, such as
shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus
injury. Straight after birth, your baby will be
more likely to have low blood sugar levels,
which can result in jitteriness, low body
temperature and tiredness.
It is also more likely that you will
need to give birth via Caesarean
section, and you will be at a higher
risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes
later on in life, as well. This can be
an ongoing health condition that
requires drastic dietary changes
and often medication to manage
the symptoms.
HOW CAN YOU
TRY TO PREVENT IT?
There are several things that you
can do to try to protect yourself
from gestational diabetes.
Exercise for at least
30 minutes
each day. Physical activity
doesn’t have to be high
intensity; as long as it gets
your heart pumping, even
a brisk walk counts!
> Limit the amount of sugary and highly
processed foods that you eat. Many foods that
contain a lot of sugar don’t actually taste sweet,
so it is always best to read the food information
label to be sure.
> Focus on eating regular meals that are high
in fiber, including whole grains and lots of
vegetables.
HOW DO YOU KNOW
IF YOU HAVE IT?
Many women don't suffer symptoms
and need to be tested to find out if they
have gestational diabetes. This test
is usually done between 24 and 28
weeks into their pregnancy.
If you are at a particularly high risk, you
may be tested earlier, but it is
routinely done at this time.
> Your doctor will explain to you how the test
works although usually the level of glucose
in your blood is tested about an hour after
drinking a sugary beverage. If you have higher
glucose than usual, more tests will be done to
confirm the diagnosis.
> Occasionally, some women also experience
symptoms such as increased thirst and
urination although many women who don’t
notice this may also have gestational diabetes.

Aging is inevitable, and unfortunately it comes
with a host of physical and mental changes — most
of which are not very welcome. Where your
muscles were once strong and your joints mobile,
aging can leave you feeling weak, tired
and stiff. This often makes leading an active,
independent, productive life very difficult. While
medical science can prolong life, daily quality often
suffers, and I’m sure you know at least a few older
people who hardly ever leave their homes. Many
spend most of their time sitting in front of the TV.
You do not have to be a
victim of the aging process!
The Aging process
In simple terms, aging occurs when cellular
breakdown (catabolism) outpaces rebuilding
in the body (anabolism). This results in
several changes that, I’m sure you’ll agree,
are far from desirable:
You can meet it head on, and take steps to preserve
your physical and mental faculties so that you can make
your golden years as active and productive as possible.
> Weaker, smaller muscles.
> Reduced heart and lung fitness.
> Reduced bone density and strength that
may lead to osteoporosis.
> Impaired balance and co-ordination
which may lead to suffering a fall.
> The dreaded middle age spread — weight
gain caused by muscle loss, reduced
metabolic rate and lowered activity
levels.
While aging and its associated physical
changes is inevitable, they can be slowed to a
crawl if you remember this one, vital principle
— use it or lose it.
HEALTH AND LIFE
Use It or Lose It
Your body is a master adapter,
by which I mean it gets very good
at doing whatever you do frequently.
If you spend all day sitting in a chair
watching TV, that’s exactly what your
body will get good at doing.
However, if you get up, get out and exercise, your
body will adapt to whatever type of workout you
perform, and your fitness and health will
improve — whatever your age.
Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the man who invented
the term aerobics, who is considered to be the
godfather of modern exercise science, once said,
“We do not stop exercising because we grow old —
we grow old because we stop exercising.” which is
the philosophy of use it or lose it in a nutshell.
Many older people consider exercise to be an
activity only suited to the young, when in fact,
the opposite is true. Up until the age of 40 or so,
anabolism naturally outpaces catabolism and
markers like muscle mass, strength and bone mass
naturally peak. However, once that threshold is
crossed, age-related catabolism starts to speed up.
Exercise can significantly slow the physical
and mental declines commonly associated
with age, so that strength, fitness and mobility are
preserved.
Physically demanding activities
such as gardening and household
chores can also help build allaround
strength — especially
if you are unused to regular
exercise.
According to the
American Heart
Association, you should
build up to around
150 MINUTES
of cardiovascular
exercise per week
Types of Exercise and
Their Benefits
There are several types of exercise that you should
include in a well-rounded exercise program, and each one
offers different age-related benefits.
01 02
Strength Training involves lifting weights,
doing body weight exercises, using rubber
resistance bands or otherwise placing your
muscles under load. This will preserve or even
improve your strength which will make virtually
every physical task easier and less tiring. Lack
of strength can impair your ability to walk, get
out of bed, climb stairs or get out of a chair so
strength training is essential for maintaining an
active, independent lifestyle. Strength training
can also: increase your bone density, help
maintain your joint mobility, improve your
balance and increase your insulin sensitivity,
which will reduce your risk of
developing type 2 diabetes.
To get the most from strength training,
you need to expose your muscles to
more stress than they are used to, two
or three times a week. To do this, you
can go to the gym and exercise under
the tutelage of a qualified, experienced
instructor or if you prefer, perform
bodyweight exercises such as push-ups
and step-ups at home. Also, remember
that physically demanding activities
such as gardening and household
chores can also help build all-around
strength — especially if you are unused
to regular exercise.
Cardiovascular Exercise, also known as
aerobic exercise, affects your heart, lungs and
circulatory system. Cardiovascular exercise
is also inextricably linked to cardiovascular
health. Examples of cardiovascular exercise
include: walking, jogging, swimming and
cycling, or group exercise classes such as step
or dance aerobics. These are all different types
of activities that leave you warm and feeling out
of breath. Cardiovascular exercise also burns
calories which can help you to maintain your
healthy, ideal weight.
According to the American Heart Association,
you should build up to around 150 minutes of
cardiovascular exercise per week to improve
your fitness and reduce your risk of suffering
cardiovascular diseases such as coronary
heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.
This equates to 30 minutes, five-times a week.
However, there is no need to jump right in at
this level — just start by doing as much as is
comfortable, and then increase the duration
and frequency of your workouts,
as you are able.
You should be slightly out of breath but still be
able to hold a conversation when you perform
this kind of exercise. If you have any foot, ankle,
knee, hip or lower back issues, choose low
impact activities such as swimming or cycling.
Running and other high impact activities may
make your aches and pains worse.
FITNESS MOTIVATION
Muscles naturally shorten
with age and arthritis,
caused by inflammation and
wear and tear which can
make joints painful and stiff.
Considerations for
Older Exercisers
Exercise is undeniably beneficial, but it is not without its risks.
If you are new to exercise, have been sedentary or unwell lately or if you have
any chronic medical condition and are taking medication, check with your
doctor before starting a new exercise routine.
03
Seek out expert guidance
from an experienced instructor
or trainer, if you are unsure how to
integrate regular exercise into
your current lifestyle.
Mobility and Flexibility Exercises are
important for keeping your muscles and joints
healthy. Muscles naturally shorten with age and
arthritis, caused by inflammation and wear and
tear which can make joints painful and stiff. The
less you move your muscles and joints, the
tighter your muscles will feel and the stiffer
your joints will become so it is very important
that you perform mobility and flexibility
exercises. To improve your mobility, take your
major joints through a gradually increasing,
pain free, range of movement. For example, roll
your shoulders back and then progress into arm
circles. To improve your flexibility, gently stretch
your major muscles.
Try, sitting on the floor with your legs
straight and leaning forward toward
your toes. Perform mobility and
flexibility exercises daily, for best results.
Once you have the all-clear, start slowly and increase frequency, duration and intensity
of exercise gradually, as doing too much can leave you sore and stiff. Seek out expert guidance
from an experienced instructor or trainer, if you are unsure how to integrate regular exercise
into your current lifestyle. Above all, seek out activities you enjoy that seamlessly slot into your
lifestyle; I want you to make exercise part of your everyday life and for it to be something
you learn to love That way, you’ll keep doing it.
Ready, Get Set, GO!
Exercise can have a profound effect on
virtually every aspect of your health and
wellbeing but only if you actually start.
The sooner you do, the sooner you will start
enjoying these benefits. Don’t make the mistake of
thinking you have to become an exercise fanatic or
that exercise is only for the young — that couldn’t
be more untrue! Instead, embrace exercise and
make your golden years your fittest, healthiest
and most enjoyable yet, and remember the wise
words of the Roman orator Cicero, “Exercise and
temperance can preserve something of our early
strength even in old age.”
Exercise has been shown to increase
white blood cell count, which helps
fight off disease! However, excessive
exercise, such as running a marathon,
can actually weaken the immune
system, so do not over-do it!
REASONS
WHY EXCERCISE
NEEDS TO BE
A PART OF
When most of us think about exercise, the image of expensive
gyms, obsession with body image, burning calories, and
confusing machines and equipment come to mind. These
preconceived notions of what exercise is, are simply far from
reality. This article will discuss the many reasons that YOU can
use exercise to improve your health and overall quality of life.
The importance of
exercise extends way
beyond the calories
burned and muscle
size, and it can be
something that is fun,
social, and exciting.
A good way to view
exercise, is to look
at it as an essential
nutrient, like a vitamin.
It is something you
need if you are to live
optimally!
5REDUCED RATES
There is a growing amount of evidence
linking exercise to the prevention of colon
cancer and breast cancer!
6REDUCED LEVELS OF
DEPRESSION
7
Exercise is one of the best remedies
for depression. A study published in
2007 in Psychosomatic Medicine
placed sedentary, depressed adults
into multiple groups, one of which
received antidepressants, while
another was placed on an exercise
regimen. After 4 months, both
According to the National Sleep
groups experienced significant
improvements. However, after a year, afternoon helps you to sleep better!
the antidepressant group relapsed
while the exercise group did not!
The importance of exercise extends way
beyond the calories burned and muscle
size, and it can be something that is fun,
social, and exciting. The benefits of exercise
are numerous and plentiful, ranging from
decreasing stress and anxiety, to improving
heart health and muscle strength.
A complete exercise program includes
cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility,
and balance. This will ensure that you have
good heart health, strong bones and muscles,
a good range of motion, and balance to
prevent unnecessary falls and injuries.
A good way to view exercise, is to look
at it as an essential nutrient, like a vitamin.
It is something you need if you are to live
optimally!
› What Does It Mean To Exercise?
Exercise can be done anytime and pretty
much anywhere. You do not need expensive
equipment, trainers, gyms, etc. All you need is
yourself and a desire to work hard. Exercise
should be challenging, and should push you
to improve and overcome obstacles. This is
often the most fun part of exercising. If your
workout is not challenging you, then you are
not going hard enough.
Simply going for a walk outdoors can
have life-changing benefits. According to
a study conducted by the American Heart
Association, moderate-intensity walking
showed similar benefits to vigorous running
in reducing risk of high blood pressure,
diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol!
› So How Much Should Be Working Out?
You only need to exercise for 30 minutes a
day, 5 days a week! That’s right. You read that
correctly! According to the American Heart
Association, you can receive all the amazing
health benefits of exercise via moderate
exercise, such as brisk walking. Simply
exercise for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week,
for a total of 150 minutes!
However, maybe you would prefer a little
bit more intense of a workout than walking.
To receive all the benefits of exercise, 75
minutes of intense exercise is needed.
And, of course, if you would like to exercise
more than the recommended amounts, please
do so!
› Action Plan For Getting More Active
It is important for you to plan your workouts
and to limit possible excuses. Think about
what type of exercise will make it most likely
for you to work out consistently. If you love
playing soccer, then maybe joining a soccer
team would be the best option. Or maybe you
love yoga, so a membership to a yoga studio
would be a perfect choice. Or maybe you love
nature, so going on hikes in the area would
be a good start. Next, take a look at your
schedule and determine when it makes sense
SUMMER ISSUE 2015
for you to work out. Sometimes life can get
hectic trying to balance all of your tasks and
obligations. Try to choose times throughout
the week that will not be stressful, so that you
are more likely to stick to your workout plan
long-term.
It might be a good idea to get a workout
partner. A recent study published by the
Society of Behavioral Medicine, showed that
exercising with a partner can greatly improve
your motivation and exercise performance!
Finally, plan out what you need to bring. If
you want to go to the gym after work, prepare
your gym bag and maybe pack a meal from
home, thus allowing you to hit the gym right
after work.
If you plan on going for a hike before work
in the morning, preparing a breakfast and all
the things you will need to transition easily
between your hike and work. By creating a
plan, and thinking ahead, you can limit the
amount of options in your head that tells you
why you cannot do it!
› In conclusion
Incorporate exercise into your lifestyle
by changing your environment and your
mindset. Your body loves and craves
movement. You will improve your physical
health, improve your quality of life, reduce
stress and anxiety, improve mental focus
and clarity, and feel happy via the release of
endorphins.
)Behavioral Medicine
Medicine( )Psychosomatic
.)diabetes

Diabetes( )Gestational
radicals( free(؟
University( )Deakin
،)insulin resistance(

Reports" "Consumer
Complications( )Cardiac
Myocardial( Poor
)Significant Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease(
Bariatric( Restrictive
Malabsorption(
Bypass( .)Gastric
Laparoscopic(
)Sleeve Gastrectomy
Gastric( Mini
Bypass( )Roux-en-Y Gastric
Banding( )Laparpscopic Adjustable Gastric
