Ukrainian Independence Day at Kildonan Park
On August 24, 1991, Ukraine’s Parliament, exercising the inviolable
right of the Ukrainian people to self-determination, declared
Ukraine an independent, indivisible, democratic State. Each
year, on this very date, Winnipeg’s Ukrainian community led by the
Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Manitoba Provincial Council marks
this significant milestone with a free community event.
his year’s celebration, marking the 26th Anniversary of
T Ukraine’s Independence, and consisting of an official
ceremony, a celebratory concert and a zabava- dance,
took place in Kildonan Park from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. Prayers
for Ukraine and the return of peace to all its territories were
invoked by clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada,
the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, and by the Ukrainian
Evangelical Church of Winnipeg. Dignitaries of all three
levels of Government brought greetings, followed by a brief
address by Oksana Bondarchuk, President of the UCC-MPC.
The celebratory concert was very well received. It began
with renowned dance ensemble Rusalka’s signature number,
Kalyna. Other participants included talented singer Liudmyla
Lebed from Ukraine, a promising young vocal duet – Alexander
Paches and Halyna Devinyak, The Susan French School
of Highland Dance, Yevheniya Tatarenko and her husband
Yurij – mesmerizing fire spinners from Morden, and a marvelous
grand finale Hopak by Rusalka Dance Ensemble. MCs for
the event were Ivanka Babiak and Greg Udod. Entertainment
throughout the evening, including at the Independence Zabava,
was provided by the Sich Band. There were also a bouncy
castle and various children’s activities organized by volunteers
from the Manitoba Parents for Ukrainian Education and food
was available for purchase.
The atmosphere was indeed festive and attendees, both young
and old, had a wonderful time. Congratulations to the Ukrainian
Canadian Congress-Manitoba Provincial Council and its myriad
volunteers for organizing and putting on this annual event. You
won’t want to miss next year’s celebrations!
