Ukrainian Independence Day at Kildonan Park<br />

On August 24, 1991, Ukraine’s Parliament, exercising the inviolable<br />

right of the Ukrainian people to self-determination, declared<br />

Ukraine an independent, indivisible, democratic State. Each<br />

year, on this very date, Winnipeg’s Ukrainian community led by the<br />

Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Manitoba Provincial Council marks<br />

this significant milestone with a free community event.<br />

his year’s celebration, marking the 26th Anniversary of<br />

T Ukraine’s Independence, and consisting of an official<br />

ceremony, a celebratory concert and a zabava- dance,<br />

took place in Kildonan Park from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. Prayers<br />

for Ukraine and the return of peace to all its territories were<br />

invoked by clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada,<br />

the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, and by the Ukrainian<br />

Evangelical Church of Winnipeg. Dignitaries of all three<br />

levels of Government brought greetings, followed by a brief<br />

address by Oksana Bondarchuk, President of the UCC-MPC.<br />

The celebratory concert was very well received. It began<br />

with renowned dance ensemble Rusalka’s signature number,<br />

Kalyna. Other participants included talented singer Liudmyla<br />

Lebed from Ukraine, a promising young vocal duet – Alexander<br />

Paches and Halyna Devinyak, The Susan French School<br />

of Highland Dance, Yevheniya Tatarenko and her husband<br />

Yurij – mesmerizing fire spinners from Morden, and a marvelous<br />

grand finale Hopak by Rusalka Dance Ensemble. MCs for<br />

the event were Ivanka Babiak and Greg Udod. Entertainment<br />

throughout the evening, including at the Independence Zabava,<br />

was provided by the Sich Band. There were also a bouncy<br />

castle and various children’s activities organized by volunteers<br />

from the Manitoba Parents for Ukrainian Education and food<br />

was available for purchase.<br />

The atmosphere was indeed festive and attendees, both young<br />

and old, had a wonderful time. Congratulations to the Ukrainian<br />

Canadian Congress-Manitoba Provincial Council and its myriad<br />

volunteers for organizing and putting on this annual event. You<br />

won’t want to miss next year’s celebrations!<br />
