ранскона – це великій район на сході Вінніпегу, 

який простягається від Lagimodiere Boulevard до 

самого східного периметру міста. 

Історія Транскони розпочалася на початку 20-го сторіччя 

із закладення ремонтної станції для канадської 

залізниці. Назва Transcona має два складника - Trans 

від Transcontinental і cona від імені David Smith, Lord 

of Strathcona, що мешкав у Манітобі і багато зробив для 

розбудівлі і розвитку канадської залізниці, яка і до тепер 

є одним з найбільших роботодавців у Вінніпезі. 

У 1908 році був закладений майданчик під будівлю, 

але чимала кількість робітників, передбачаючи довгий 

термін будівництва ремонтної станції, почали одночасно 

будувати хати для своїх родин неподалік від 

майданчика. А незабаром з’явилися магазини, банки...і 

за 4 роки вже офіційно було затверджено існування 

селища Транскона, яке перетворилося в окреме місто 

тільки у 1961 році, а увійшло до складу міста Вінніпег 

– у 1971 році. Багато цікавих історичних матеріалів зберігається 

в Історичному Музеї Транскони. 

Транскона була і залишається самодостатнім районом. 

Більшість великих компаній, що оперують у 

Вінніпезі, мають свої представництва на комерційній 

артерії району - Regent Avenue. Серед них: Real 

Canadian Superstore, Costco, Walmart, Home Depot, 

Rona, Kildonan Place Shopping Mall, Club Regent Casino 

і концертна зала, автомобільні дилери, банки та різноманітні 

сервіси. 

Затишні і безпечні житлові райони розташовані навкруги. 

Сучасну Транскону справедливо називають 

Park City, тобто Місто-Парк. Тут ви знайдете численні 

зелені сквери і парки, такі як New Tall Grass Prairie 

Preserve, де зберігається і охороняється незаймана 

природа прерій, прекрасний Kilcona Park і Harbor View 

Golf Course, Buhler Recreation Park, Transcona Trail довжиною 

6,7 км, Transcona Golf Club, Manitoba Water Ski 

Facility, а також численні водойми та озера, два оздоровчих 

центри, п’ять тенісних кортів, три бігові доріжки, 

три зимових катки, дві критих арени і два басейни. 

Населення Транскони наближається до 40 тисяч 

мешканців; середній прихід дохід? на родину становить 

$74693, що перевищує такий показник по місту. 

14% мешканців розмовляють українською мовою! 

River East Transcona School Division, яка відома своєю 

доброю репутацією, пропонує українські двомовні 

програми. Є в районі і українські церкви. 

Транскона багата землею. Район розбудовується в 

усіх напрямках. Не так давно закінчено будівництво 

житлових мікрорайонів Canterbury Park, Mission 

Garden, Kildonan Green і Waterside Estates, а вже повним 

ходом іде будівництво Crocus Meadows, Devonshire 

Village і Starlite Village. Одночасно розвиваються і 

покращуються дороги і інфраструктура, додаються 

нові сервіси. Так, незабаром, район отримає новий 

спортивний комплекс YM(W)CA і нову бібліотеку. 

Щодо вартості землі, то в Трансконі вона дешевша, 

ніж у багатьох інших районах міста. Відповідно і податки 

на нерухомість тут менші. Наприклад, у новому 

мікрорайоні, що на сході Транскони, ділянка розміром 

більш, ніж 12 тисяч кв. футів, була продана за $129 тисяч, 

тоді як в районі West Kildonan ділянка розміром 4 

тисячі кв. футів – за $124 тисячі. А в районі St. Vital ділянка 

у 3,5 тисяч кв. футів – аж за $145 тисяч. Податки 

на нерухомість були $1264, $2120 і $2664, відповідно. 

Ринок нерухомості представлений сумішшю хатів 

різного віку, багатоквартирних будинків середнього 

розміру і кондомініумів. Транскона – це великий район, 

і у різних його частинах середня ціна житла різна, 

але усюди вартість нерухомості добре піднімається із 

часом. Наприклад, в період з 2006 до 2016 років середня 

ціна хатів у старому районі (3L) піднялася із $117 тисяч 

до $229 тисяч, а в новіших частинах (3K) – із $162 

тисяч до $330 тисяч, відповідно. 

На час написання цієї статті було виставлено на продаж 

60 хатів ціною від $199 тисяч до $580 тисяч, із них 

половина – новобудови. А також – 25 кондомініумов, 

ціною від $141 тисячі до $329 тисяч, із яких новобудови 

складають дві третини. Є в районі і дорогі оселі. Наприклад, 

на Murdock Road, що у південній Трансконі, 

продається хата з ділянкою у 2 гектари, яка має більш, 

ніж 800 кв. м площі, внутрішній басейн і окреме приміщення 

для гостей. За цю хату просять 1 мільйон 249 

тисяч доларів. 

Транскона – це прекрасно розвинутий район, добре 

пристосований для родинного життя. Мешканці Транскони 

люблять свій район! І є за що! УВ

have had children” 

his is a quote from “Ru” by Kim Thúy – a woman’s journey 

from a Saigon palatial residence to a crowded Ma-

laysian refugee camp and onto her new life in Canada. 

We were discussing the book with my book club mates when I 

thought of several couples who I know had decided to remain 

childfree. Their decision feels like a loss for humanity, as some 

of them would have made great parents. 

So how many Canadians are childless and is there a trend in 

the number of voluntary childfree Canadians? 

Human Fertility Database [Max Planck Institute for Demographic 

Research (Germany) and Vienna Institute of Demography 

(Austria) and Statistics Canada confirm that Canada hasn’t 

reached the replacement rate of 2.1 children since 1971: 

in 1984, it was estimated that 5.4% of couples had experienced 

infertility; by 2009/2010, the estimate increased to 12% - 

16%). Relatively new category is described as “perpetual postponers” 

– people who wait until they have completed their 

education, until they find lucrative employment, until they 

purchase a home, etc. 

Those people drive up the mean age at first birth, but waiting 

for the appropriate time to have a child often culminates 

in the acceptance of childlessness. 

Canada is not yet facing a declining population, only because 

of its progressive immigration policies. A number of factors have 

led to Canadians choosing to have smaller families: medical advances 

(infant mortality declined steadily since early 60), economy 

(global and national trends), and changes in law (birth control 

and therapeutic abortions were legalized in 1969). 

Data from the 1991 Census and the 2006 General Social Survey 

of Family Transitions, shows that the lowest level of childlessness 

are for cohorts of women born from around 1927 to 1941 

– 12.5%. The levels of childlessness increased with the 1942-1946 

birth cohorts (13.9%) and have continued to increase with the 

succeeding cohorts. In 1991 15.9% of 40-44 year-old women were 

childless. In 2007 - 18.94%. 

The reasons why people are childless are varied, complex and 

often overlapping. Some never wanted children, some never met 

the right person. Another factor of childlessness is infertility 

along with other health reasons (according to Statistics Canada, 

Even though the total rate of childlessness increases, estimates 

indicate that there is no apparent trend over the sixteen-year 

period (1990 to 2006): the proportion of people 

intending to remain childfree hovers at 6-9% for men and 

women ages 20-34. 

Will childlessness increase? Hard to say. Spike in childlessness 

among 30-and-35 year-old following the 2007 financial 

crisis in the USA suggests that economic stability will play a 

big role. 

The Government of Canada predicts a total fertility rate of 

1.7 in 2018 and will increase to 1.79 (75th percentile) in 2038. 

With or without children, I hope all of us will know what it

анада сталася в моєму житті блискавично 

швидко. Ще вчора, навіть у найсміливіших

своїх мріях, я й уявити собі не могла переїзд 

на інший бік світу. Ледачі мрії про південь, про легкі 

сорочки цілий рік та дозрілі соковиті фрукти з видом 

на тепле море починалися кожного року із першим 

холодом та закінчувалися із першими пелюстками 

українських пролісків навесні. 

Однієї весни моєї душі я зустріла Його. Факт того, 

що він живе у Канаді промайнув повз мене, сховався 

поза його доброю посмішкою, м’яким голосом і щирим 

серцем. Душа сягала неба і розуміла - відтепер 

домівка тільки там, де він. 

Час промайнув немов змах пташиного крила. Тільки 

но ми насолоджувалися осіннім багрянцем київських 

вуличок та грілись глінтвейном в потаємних 

кафе, як вже спостерігали неймовірний танок північного 

сяйва понад канадськими преріями. Опівночі 

31 грудня я побажала провести разом наступний 

рік, а він дістав обручку і запропонував провести 

разом усе життя. 

Прошепотівши сердечні клятви перед старовинною 

іконою Оранти у Києві, ми одружилися, оточені 

таїнством святих стін Софійського собору. Отримавши 

благословення від живильної української землі, 

натхненно та сяюче, народилася наша сім’я, 

Ці рядки я пишу, сидячи біля вікна кабінету мого 

чоловіка, що повільно, але впевнено, обростаючи 

фарбами та пензлями, стає моєю творчою майстернею. 

З вікна відкривається вид на сусідні затишні 

будиночки класичного північноамериканського

suburban. Навкруги - столітні дерева, що скинули листя після 

того, як випав перший сніг, прикрасивши золотом зимову 

казку. 

Я вже пережила свою першу, теплу, як тут кажуть, зиму - із 

хуртовиною, температурою мінус тридцять два та вологістю 

«not available». Моя історія відкриття Канади для себе, або 

точніше кажучи - відкриття себе у Канаді, почалася з того, 

що я бавилася як дитина з усіма відмінностями, в повному 

захваті відкриваючи відомі раніше речі зовсім по-новому. 

Українські корені моєї нової сім’ї та провінція з найбільшою 

українською діаспорою, зробили цей перехід іще легшим. 

Такого приголомшливого культурного міксу традицій і заповідної, 

незайманої природи я не зустрічала ніде в Європі. 

Мене не залишає відчуття, що я живу у національному 

парку, а не у місті. Розкішна природа зустрічає тебе кожного 

дня – варто тільки глянути у вікно і побачиш як бавляться 

білки та зайці. 

Культурний спадок українських канадців сповнює вулички 

мого міста та пам’ятки мистецтва теплом, котре відчуваєш 

усім серцем. Воно наповнює душу вдячністю великим 

людям, що змогли поширити свої таланти, мистецтво і натхнення 

не тільки у країні де народилися, але й у країні, яка 

стала їм затишною домівкою. 

Іноді ми зовсім не уявляємо, що насправді може зробити 

нас щасливішими і гармонічнішими. Канада відкрила мені 

нові горизонти, кожен день дивує та вражає відкриттями. 

Стоячи на канадській землі, закладаючи фундамент коренів 

нового українсько-канадського роду, я відчуваю енергію 

предків, що наповнили цю родючу та багату землю українською 

любов’ю. Це відчуття збагачує глибини моєї душі 

і підіймає на поверхню яскраве усвідомлення – я вдома. УВ

There are two categories of Ukrainian 

Christmas songs: the kolyadky (Ukrainian: 

колядки), which are sung on Christ- 


mas Eve and on Christmas Day. The other 

category of songs called shchedrivky 

(Ukrainian: щедрівки) are a derivation of 

the word meaning ‘generous’; and are sung 

on New Year’s Day.

cultural costumes and gathered together

for a celebration. They proudly sung traditional 

and modern carols, provided greetings and performed 

traditional dances. 

This annual event of celebrating community 

and Ukrainian Christmas traditions brings 

together special guests which include: Provincial 

Government members, River East Transcona 

School Division trustees, school administrators, 

superintendent office representatives, officials 

from the Ukrainian community, students’ parents 

and friends. 

During the evening celebrations, the Bernie 

Wolfe Community School EUBP (English- 

Ukrainian Bilingual Program) Parent’s Committee 

provided a sample of a traditional Ukrainian 

delicacy called “Kutia” (Ukrainian: кутя). Kutia 

is a dish traditionally served during the Christmas 

Eve dinner also known as Svyata Vecherya 

(Ukrainian: свята вечеря). 

Kutia is made with cooked wheat combined 

with honey, poppy seed, chopped nuts and dried 

fruit. It is a symbol of past and future generations. 

More importantly, it is a symbol of victory 

over death. Each ingredient in Kutia has a special 

meaning: wheat is a symbol of Ukraine as an 

agricultural nation. The kernels of wheat are a 

reminder of the preciousness of life and of Jesus’ 

words spread throughout the world. Fertility and 

prosperity are symbolized by Poppy seeds. Nuts represent 

the gift of health and the honey reminds us of life’s 

sweetness. 

Grade 8 students from Chief Peguis Junior High School 

enthusiastically participated in the annual event by explaining 

the meaning of many traditions. 

“Kolyada is not only a celebration, it is a Ukrainian 

Christmas Tradition.” said Brayden. “We sang very well 

and the food was delicious. “There were a lot of guests, 

parents and friends and they listened to us very nicely,” 

commented Daniel. Emily was happy to participate 

and said: “Kolyada was an awesome night and I am so 

sad that this was my lst year at this great event.” Katelyn 

was thankful her teacher prepared the students for 

Kolyada. She said, “This was my last time singing at 

Kolyada and we did very well! I would recommend all 

attend, even if you are not 100% Ukrainian, just come to 

enjoy the carols and Ukrainian food.” 

A big Thank You! to all the students. The proud parents 

express appreciation to the teachers for teaching their 

children a wide variety of Ukrainian Christmas carols. 

Thank You! Also, to the Parent Committee for the event 

organization and to the special guests who support the 

English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program. We wish everyone 

a peaceful and prosperous year! May each day of 

the New Year be filled with contentment, good opportunities, 

peace and abundance!

he 3rd annual Ukrainian Night, hosted by the Dauphin 

Kings Junior “A” hockey team, was a tremen-

dous success. 2,500 hockey fans flocked to Credit 

Union Place, which is one of the premier amateur hockey 

facilities in Manitoba. The City of Dauphin is located in the 

Parkland Region of Manitoba and is approximately 300 km 

northwest of Winnipeg. Dauphin is also home to Canada’s 

National Ukrainian Festival, which is held annually during 

the August long weekend. 

The Winnipeg Blues provided the opposition for the 

Dauphin Kings in this regularly scheduled Manitoba Junior 

Hockey League game. This unique event had a special 

Ukrainian focus that included Ukrainian music, dance and 

cuisine. 

Christian Laughland, Director of Marketing & Media Relations 

for the Dauphin Kings, commented, 

“The game is at a point now where the players and the staff 

of the Kings look forward to it many months in advance. It 

almost feels like am unofficial holiday in Dauphin because 

of the way it’s talked about around town and by the players.” 

Under the watchful eye of the Ukrainian Cossack honour 

guard, the Dauphin players (in their special game day jerseys) 

were introduced by Stephan Jaddock in Ukrainian. 

Last year`s jerseys, which were designed in a Vyshanvanka 

style, garnered much interest. 

Ryan Rauliuk manager of Ruff’s Furniture in Dauphin who 

is instrumental in organizing Ukrainian Night explained, 

“The Dauphin Kings were able to sell an additional 125 jerseys 

last year, which turned into a major fundraiser for the 

team. Jerseys were sold across Canada, the United States 

and Ukraine.” 

The Dauphin Kings looked very impressive in this year`s 

jerseys that were black with a yellow and blue design! 

The Winnipeg Blues, appropriately wearing yellow and 

blue uniforms, were welcomed to Dauphin in the Ukrainian 

tradition by being presented with salt and bread. 

The children’s choir, representing the Smith Jackson 

School English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program in Dauphin, did 

an excellent rendition of both the Canadian and Ukrainian 

national anthems in the Ukrainian language. 

Mayor Allen Dowhan dropped the puck during the opening 

ceremonies. Mr. Dowhan has been an active supporter of 

Ukrainian Night from the beginning. 

Regarding the benefits of Ukrainian Night, Mr. Dowhan added, 

“The event promotes Ukrainian Culture, promotes the Dauphin 

King’s and helps them financially, and promotes Dauphin 

as a tourism destination. “ 

As mentioned in this article, many residents, businesses 

and organizations in the Dauphin area continue to support 

this annual event. 

For example, Ukrainian-Canadian Barry Trotz (former 

captain of the Dauphin Kings who is presently the head 

coach of the Washington Capitals) donated two jerseys for 

this fund raiser. 

Spectators were entertained by this hockey game, which 

displayed fast skating, excellent puck-handling and good 

playing-making. Unfortunately, the Dauphin Kings rally in 

the third period fell short, and the Blues skated off with a 

7-4 victory. 

Rauliuk and his supporters are now planning for the 2019 

event. Perhaps the organizers should consider inviting a 

team from Ukraine to participate in this event! УВ

світової академії хореографії Ленінградської консерваторії 

ім. Римського-Корсакова – цікава та талановита 

особистість, відмічена професійними нагородами та 

званнями: Заслужений діяч мистецтв України, лауреат Міжнародного 

конкурсу з хореографії Гранд – Прі, має величезний 

професійний досвід: соліст балету та балетмейстер-постановник 

ансамблю ім. Павла Вірського, головний режисер-балетмейстер 

Національного академічного українського 

народного хору ім. Григорія Верьовки, художній керівник 

концертного об’єднання «Калина». 

Наразі Валерій проживає у Вінніпезі і залюбки надав матеріли 

про «Бога танцю» – одного з найкращих хореографів 

Європи Сержа Лифаря, з яким йому випала нагода зустрітися 

особисто. 

У свої 18 років Валерій Дебелий вже був артистом балету 

ансамблю Павла Вірського. Його перша закордонна подорож 

була до Парижу, де молодому танцюристу відкрився 

абсолютно новий світ: Лувр, Версаль, Єлисейські поля, Нотр 

Дам де Парі. Але найдивовижнішим стало знайомство з українцями 

Сержем Лифарем та Василем Авраменко. Концерт 

ансамблю Павла Вірського проходив в Гранд-опера Парижу 

і Серж, після виступу ансамбля, зайшов привітати українців. 

Зі спогадів Валерія, Лифар був у захваті від концертної програми 

та назвав Павла Вірського – кращим балетмейстером 

світу. Можна собі уявити, що для молодих артистів значили 

слова похвали від визнаного світового генія, який ще й був 

їх співвітчизником. 

Він був гордістю Франції, але при цьому постійно відмовлявся 

від французького громадянства. Навіть коли сам 

президент Франції Шарль де Голль, звертаючись до Сержа, 

відзначив його заслуги перед країною та запропонував 

прийняти громадянство, Лифар відповів: «Я вдячний вам 

пане Президенте за вашу пропозицію, але я ніколи не був 

і не буду французом, тому що я - українець і батьківщина 

моя - Україна». 

Ще одним маловідомим фактом про Сергія є те, що він 

все життя мріяв про Україну. І тільки в 1969 році, будучи 

почесним гостем балетного конкурсу в Москві, в вихідний 

день, він таємно приїхав до Києва, аби вклонитися могилі 

своїх батьків. Сумно, що наша країна на довгі роки придала 

забуттю ім’я Сержа Лифаря. Лише в 1995 році на його честь 

назвали Міжнародний конкурс балету. При всій любові до 

батьківщини, Лифар не зміг реалізувати себе вдома, але 

зробив це у Франції, під заступництвом балетного Метра 

– Сергія Дягілєва. 


На початку ХХ століття, після смерті знаменитого балетмейстера 

Маріуса Петіпа, почався сильний занепад балетного 

жанру. Дирекція Петербурзького Імператорського театру з 

легкістю розлучається з солістами балету Ганною Павловою 

і Вацлавом Ніжинським, і багатьма іншими митцями, чий 

неспокійний творчий дух порушував «порядок», який повинен 

був панувати в театрах, що служили можновладцям 

в палацах та абонементним ложам. У цей період на арену 

вийшов Сергій Дягілєв. Він був високо ерудованою людиною 

з величезними організаторськими здібностями, обізнаний в 

різноманітних жанрах: музиці, вокалі, балеті, живописі. За 

короткий час він стає легендою, представивши концерти 

класичної спадщини та сучасності з кращими представниками 

російського мистецтва: Ф. Шаляпіним А. Павловою, В. 

Ніжинським, М. Фокіним, І. Стравінським, С. Прокоф’євим, 

Л. Бакстом, А. Бенуа та іншими. 

Серж Лифар в цей час лише починав свій творчий шлях. 

Лифар народився 2 квітня 1905 року в Києві. За його розповідями, 

своє дитинство він пам’ятав з двох-трьох річного віку. 

Дуже любив маму, якій довіряв свої найпотаємніші мрії, та 

дідуся, який мешкав у Каневі. Батька представляв сильним і 

грізним – таким, яким бачив його із вбитим вовком після 

полювання. Рід Сержа Лифаря мав козацьке коріння. 

Його прадід отримував грамоти з восковими печатками 

від українських гетьманів й кошових 

отаманів великого Війська Запорозького. 

Все життя Серж з трепетом 

згадував народні свята, особливо 

любив різдвяні звичаї. Слухаючи 

народні пісні, він немов 

торкався чистого джерела прадавньої 

вікової культури й 

вбирав у себе найдавнішу 

правду, тремтливо 

торкався 

живого минулого України. Професійно займатися танцями 

Лифар почав досить пізно. У 14 років, зовсім випадково, через 

цікавість до гарненьких дівчат балетної студії, за компанією з 

другом, потрапив на курси до балетного педагога Броніслави 

Ніжинської, яка, до речі, не відразу оцінила багатогранність 

таланту Лифаря. Абсолютно випадково він потрапляє в групу 

з п’яти хлопців, що відправлялись до Парижу, на запрошення 

легендарного балетного імпресаріо Сергія Дягілєва до його 

трупи. Перші дні в паризській балетній трупі були складними 

для Сергія – його не визнавали, він відчував себе самотньо 

і незатишно. Але одного разу, після репетиції, він поспілкувався 

з Дягілєвим, і знайшов в його особі заступника і покровителя. 

Через деякий час Дягілєв відправляє Лифаря в Мілан, 

до знаменитого педагога Енріко Чекетті, завдяки якому талант 

Сергія розкрився повною мірою. Крім професійної освіти, 

Дягілєв давав Лифарю можливість збагачуватися духовно: 

знайомитись зі світовими шедеврами живопису, скульптури 

і архітектури. Імпресаріо створив Сержу найсприятливіший 

клімат для реалізації його таланту – він навіть вів перемовини 

з примою Маріїнського Імператорського театру Матильдою 

Кшесинською і знаменитою російською балериною Тамарою 

Карсавіною, запрошуючи кращих балетмейстерів для постановки 

вистав, де Лифар був солістом. 

Виступ молодого артиста у ролі «Блудного сина» в однойменному 

балеті С. Прокоф’єва – одна з головних вершин 

виконавської майстерності Лифаря і найяскравіша подія 

останнього дягілєвського сезону в Парижі. Він настільки 

зумів розкрити цей образ, що сколихнув весь зал своєю відвертістю. 

Ця робота стала дуже важливою у житті молодого 

танцівника – він відчував спорідненість зі своїм героєм, адже 

теж залишив сім’ю, рідний дім та батьківщину. У цей образ 

Лифар вклав увесь біль, сум та тугу за рідним краєм. Після 

вистави, на якому були присутні Коко Шанель, Пікассо, Стравінський, 

Прокоф’єв, Кокто і багато інших, Дягілєв, піднявши 

келих, сказав Сержу Лифарю: «Мені більше нема чому Вас 

вчити». Це був абсолютний успіх! 

Справжнім маніфестом 

авангарду став «Ікар» у 

виконанні Сержа. Більш 

того, в цій виставі 

утвердилась роль чоловічого 

танцю в балетному 

жанрі. Славнозвісний 

«Політ 

Ікара» став абсолютно 

новаторською хореографічною 

роботою та 

безперечним тріумфом 

автора – Лифар 

ввів свої елементи 

хореографії: скульптурного 

танцю, 

мальовничі пози 

і характер героя 

вищого суспільства.

Це був взірець чоловічої вишуканості в особі Сержа Лифаря. 

Друг Сержа, письменник Жан Кокто, писав про цю 

виставу: «Танець кидає виклик небу. Танцівник докладає всіх 

земних сил, аби злетіти у височінь. Міф ламає йому крила, 

але геній танцю рятує його й залишає герою шанс бути людиною. 

Лифар іде в повітрі, наче боги, що ходять по хвилях». 

За цим стояла надлюдська праця, його колеги розповідали 

про неймовірну силу і вражаючу 

витривалість танцівника. 

Він щодня працював у театрі 

з восьми ранку до півночі, 

харчуючись лише цукром із 

кавою: «Засипаний компліментами, 

похвалою, – згадувала 

балерина Ліан Дейде, 

– він, проте, залишався дуже 

простим. Це був дуже щирий 

чоловік, типовий слов’янин з 

усіма властивими крайнощами 

– раптово він міг перейти 

від нестримної радості до глибокого 

суму... Перед ним схиляли 

голову: Лифар – геній». 

Роль Ікара дуже символічна 

для Сержа, адже таємниця та 

трагедія героя міфу полягала 

у тому, що він був вільним, 

але туди куди хотів потрапити 

найбільше, так і не долетів… 

На балетній сцені Києва, Серж 

так і не станцював. 

Після смерті балетного 

імпресаріо Сергія Дягілєва, 

Лифар залишився на самоті, 

працював в програмі «Російські 

сезони». З часом він випадково 

зустрічає директора 

Гранд-опера Жана Руша, який 

пропонує йому створити, у 

співавторстві з хореографом 

Баланчиним, виставу «Прометей». 

Після надзвичайно 

успішної прем’єри балету на 

честь 160-річчя Л. Бетховена, 

здійснилася найзаповітніша 

мрія Сергія: йому запропонували 

постійну роботу у Грандопера. 

Він став одразу і художнім 

директором балету, і 

балетмейстером-постановником, 

і танцівником-прем’єром. 

У 1929 році Лифарю виповнилося 

24 роки. Незважаючи 

на юний вік, молодий 

українець своєю енергією 

розбуджує театр від сну і 

проводить великі реформи у 

французькому балеті, схожі 

з тими, які здійснював француз 

М.Петіпа в Петербурзі. 

«Театр – мій дім» – так говорив Серж Лифар, віддаючи все 

своє життя театру. За роки педагогічної діяльності Лифар 

виростив сузір’я національних кадрів балету Франції, і балет 

Гранд-опера став одним з кращих в світовій культурі. 

При цьому Серж Лифар був українцем до мозку кісток. 

Недалеко від Парижа, на могильній плиті в Сент-Женев’євде-Буа, 

де поховано великого 

сина українського 

народу, зазначено: «Serge 

Lifar de Kiev»— «Серж Лифар 

із Києва». Лифар дуже 

любив Київ і писав про це 

в своїх мемуарах: «Тільки 

той, хто був у Києві, хто дивився 

з Царського майданчика 

(нині – Європейська 

площа) на широкий, урочисто 

величний, спокійно 

сяючий своїм сріблом на 

сонці Дніпро...— тільки той 

зрозуміє, чому для киянина 

немає нічого дорожчого за 

Київ із його Дніпром, який 

з дитинства входить у все 

твоє єство». Лифар мріяв 

станцювати в Києві, але за 

часів Радянського Союзу 

дорога додому була закрита 

для нього, а ім’я майстра 

піддане забуттю. Незалежна 

Україна не забула свого 

сина: у 1994 році на його 

честь було створено Міжнародний 

конкурс балету, 

що швидко набув світової 

популярності й одержав 

патронат Всесвітньої Ради 

танцю ЮНЕСКО. У зазначеному 

конкурсі, до речі, 

приймав активну участь 

Валерій Дебелий – у якості 

Віце-Президента Академії 

танцю України. На конкурсі 

перемогла киянка Ірина 

Дворовенко, котра з часом 

стає прімою-балериною 

Нью-Йорк Сіті балету . 

На цьому ж конкурсі 

була присутня дружина 

Сергія Лифаря – шведська 

графиня Ліллан Аллефельд-Лаурвіг, 

яка передала 

безцінні речі майстра до 

музеїв України, серед них і 

найкоштовнішу річ – Золотий 

черевичок, усипаний 

діамантами, своєрідний 

Оскар у балеті, театральні 

костюми танцівника та 

численні нагороди. Лифар 

Марка України із зображенням Лифара, 2004 рік 

Графиня Ліллан Аллефельд, Валерій Дебелий на Першому міжнародному 

конкурсі ім. Сержа Лифара 


був обласканий урядом Франції – жоден із видатних митців-французів 

не мав стільки урядових нагород, як українець 

С. Лифар. Серед них – Золота медаль Парижа, найпрестижніший 

орден Почесного легіону, заснований ще 

Наполеоном. Він був славою і гордістю Франції, маючі 

найвищі нагороди цієї країни. Улюбленець еліти французької 

культури, Серж Лифар достойно займає місце в 

Пантеоні історії Франції, разом з Королевою Франції Анною 

– донькою великого князя Київської Русі – Ярослава 

Мудрого. 

Помер Сергій Лифар у 1986 році. В останні дні свого 

життя він казав: «Безперечно, настав час подумати не так 

про своє минуле, як про найближче майбутнє. Що мене 

заспокоює – це твердження Святого Василія: «Танець – 

переважне заняття небесних ангелів». 

Серж є гордістю української нації, 

при тому, що віддав всього себе 

французькій культурі. Слава 

митця живе і сьогодні, молоді 

таланти, визнані зірки 

світового балету, виховані 

Лифарем, із гідністю продовжують

Але як, це зазвичай трапляється, саме тієї миті я найбільше 

знадобилася своїй доньці. «Мамо, а що ти робиш? А хто тобі написав? А що 

ти пишеш у відповідь?..» Аби переключити увагу малечі бодай на хвилинку, я 

придумала простеньку гру. «А давай, ти подивишся навколо і розповіси мені, що бачиш цікавого? 

– запропонувала я. «Добре. Я бачу в небі райдугу і… друге сонечко» - почула я за мить. 

Помилкове сонце або Паргелій 

(від грецького “пара” - “біля” і “геліос” - 

“сонце”) — оптичне явище, яке виглядає 

як світла або райдужна пляма в небі з 

одного чи обох бчоків від сонця. Виникає 

внаслідок заломлення сонячного світла 

в кристаликах льоду, які містяться в 

атмосфері. 

Найбільш давнє зображення паргелію в живописі. 

Стокгольм, 20 квітня 1535 рік. 

Помилкове сонце може з’являтися як на півночі, так і в 

південних широтах (але все одно без льоду не обійтися). 

Перші свідоцтва про цей феномен йдуть ще від давніх єгиптян 

та греків, які й дали йому назву – паргелій або parhelion. 

Іноді паргелій також називають «сонце з вухами», “сонце в 

рукавицях”, sundogs, parhelia, mock suns, moon dogs. 

Паргелій може проявлятися у вигляді появи одного, двох, 

трьох, чотирьох і навіть п’яти сонць. Серед досить рідкісних 

видів паргелію, відзначають так званий «помилковий схід». 

Під час помилкового сходу справжнє сонце знаходиться 

за горизонтом, а над ним сходить несправжнє «підступне» 

світило. 

Цікаво, що таке атмосферне явище, як паргелій, іноді 

супроводжувало деяких подій історії. У “Слові о полку Ігоревім” 

розповідається, що напередодні наступу половців і захоплення 

в полон князя Ігоря “чотири сонця засяяли над землею”. Воїни 

сприйняли це як знак великої біди, що насувається. 

Так само У 1551 році після тривалої облоги військами 

імператора Карла V німецького міста Магдебурга в небі над 

містом раптом з’явилися помилкові сонця. Серед воїнів це 

викликало не аби яку метушню. Вони сприйняли паргелій як 

“небесне знамення”. Вирішивши, що на захист Магдебургу 

став сам Господь, Карл V наказав припинити облогу міста. 

Історія зберегла чимало й інших прикладів подібного 

роду. Всі вони - переконливе свідчення того, що незнання 

робить людину забобонною, а іноді навіть змушує приймати 

помилкові рішення. Тож паргелію боятися не варто. Єдина, 

не дужа приємна річ, яку може спрогнозувати це явище – у 

сильний мороз райдужні стовпи навколо сонця свідчать про 

подальше зниження температури повітря. УВ

When I came into this world, I was rejected and left as an 

orphan. My first home was a special orphanage for babies. 

Later as an orphan I was placed in a boarding school and as 

I got older an orphanage became my home. I never had any 

visitors and every day I would wish that my mother would 

come and get me. Eventually I realized that this day was 

not going to happen. The only way I was able to cope with 

life was to become bitter, aggressive and rebellious against 

everyone and everything.” 

his is the story of one of the young women whose 

life could have had a different ending if it was not 

T for the Home of Hope in Lviv, Ukraine. A ministry 

of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, 

that opened its doors just over five years ago as a safe place 

for girls who have come from a life filled with hopelessness, 

abuse, and are prey for human traffickers. 

When this young girl came to the Home of Hope for the 

first time, Sister could see how deeply wounded she was. 

The girl kept her distance, and continued with her rebellious, 

self-centered attitude. It was a difficult time for the 

community of Sisters and other young women at the home, 

but in one year her life began to change. She allowed herself 

to experience the love of others and the love of God. 

She has learned life skills and discovered the many gifts 

that she has and is willing to share with others. She will 

soon graduate with her post-secondary education and has a 

dream to share her life in ministry with others. 

It is now three years since she came to the Home of Hope. 

This is what she recently shared with the Sisters. 

“My life before home of Hope was irresponsible, difficult and out 

of control, but here everything changed. The example lived out by 

the Sisters is one that is very patient, caring and challenging. From 

the beginning I did not accept the Sisters but I eventually realized 

that everything they do, they do it out of an act of love. Because of 

this my life has had a lot of changes. I became responsible for my 

life and life decisions, I was able to let go of my complexes and become 

more confident. Most importantly I discovered God. I thank 

God for this family that has made me realize that I am needed – I 

have a purpose. This feeling has made me a happy person.” 

This is only one example from the 22 girls that live at the 

home Lviv Ukraine. The Home of Hope is a place committed 

to helping form the girls with life skills that will enable 

them to live independently someday. The Sisters ensure 

that the operational needs are met, along with providing 

the girls spiritual support, inspiration, direction and friendship. 

The Sisters are also helping the girls to understand the 

importance of helping others as they have been helped. As 

a community they visit hospitals sharing gifts and time. All 

the girls are enrolled in post-secondary education. Some 

have graduated and have moved on to establish their life, 

but continue to be in touch with those living at the Home. 

This place has a real direct connection with Winnipeg and 

Canada. The Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, who began 

their work in Ukraine 125 years ago, are Sisters with 

deeps roots in Canada. When the first four Sisters first 

arrived in Canada in 1902 they quickly became a light to 

many Ukrainian immigrants helping them to adjust to their 

new homeland especially in the area of working with the 

children. The sisters taught the children as well as the parents 

to read and to appreciate and love their rich spiritual 

and cultural heritage. Through this they lived and shared 

their faith, spreading across Canada. 

Steeped in tradition, yet progressive, the Sisters have carried 

out its humble, yet distinguished, role to make this a 

better world through a broad-scoped view of their ministries. 

Never bound by a singly-defined ministry, the Sisters 

have always taken a flexible view, remaining faithful to its 

charism and the founders’ words, “Serve where the need is 

the greatest.” 

In Manitoba, the Sisters still own and operate two major 

ministries, Holy Family Home a long-term care facility on 

Main Street and Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Winnipeg. 

As we know time does not stand still, things change, 

circumstances change, and we in Canada are now in a position 

to help our dear Sisters in Ukraine especially with this 

new ministry that they have recently established.

kraine occupies an important strategic position in Europe, both from a 

human and the material basis. By tracing the fate of the Ukrainian people 

through the centuries we can explain the process by which Ukraine has 

appeared upon the maps of the world. Ukraine has had a sad and tragic history. 

The name Ukraine with its translation has been used in a variety of ways 

since the 12th century but in the end, the meaning of Ukraine, “land within the 

edge of a border” it defines the territory of Kievan Rus (the state which grew 

to encompass modern day Ukraine, Byelorussia and north-western portions of 

Russia). 

Ukrainians are believed to have descended from the Indo-Europeans with 

roots found in the Trypillya culture which dates back to the fifth to third millennia 

BC. 

During a vast period of time, Ukraine was inundated by many other ancient 

cultures such as the Scythians, Greek city-states and ancient Rome, to be succeeded 

by the Goths and Huns. By the end of the 10th century, the city of 

Kyiv became the capital of a powerful state-Kyivan Rus (border stretched from 

Baltic to the Black Sea and from the Carpathian Mountains to the Volga River). 

Kievan Rus (882-1240 CE) 

During a vast period of time, Ukraine

The 13th century saw a devastating 

invasion of the Mongols which dealt a 

mortal blow to Kyivan Rus which had 

already been weakened by internal 

strife with local rulers vying for power. 


During this unrest neighbouring countries like Lithuania, 

Poland, Muscovy (Russia) and Turkey wanted to 

establish control of the fertile land and advantageous 

geographical position of Ukraine. To alleviate the tension, 

a Cossack state emerged, Zaporizhian Sich, (an 

autonomous political organized society, located in today’s 

central Ukraine), they acquired the status of an 

upholder of freedom and cultural traditions. 

Over the years, the Cossack state emerged as a savior 

for Ukraine until 1654. In that year Ukraine faced 

an imminent number of invasions from neighbouring 

countries (Turkey and Poland). Ukraine was forced 

to sign a treaty with Russia which put Ukraine under 

the protection of the Russian tsar, this was called the 

Pereyaslav Treaty. This Treaty proved to be a turning 

and tragic point in the history for Ukraine; strict control 

was established by Russia over the Cossack selfgovernment.

As the years progressed, attempts by a number of 

Hetmans (military Cossack commanders, second in 

rank after the Prince of Ukraine) tried to break away 

from Russia but failed and serfdom was introduced by the late 18th 

century. In spite of the loss of statehood, prominent cultural figures of 

Ukraine, and later an ever widening circle of Ukrainian intellectuals, 

never abandoned the hope of restoring Ukraine’s independence. Then 

into the 19th and 20th centuries Ukraine saw some upsurge of activity 

and awareness in the national liberation movement 

The time from 1917 to 1921 proved to be very difficult for Ukraine. 

There was struggle for power, rampant banditry, and total confusion. In 

1922, most of Ukraine became a socialist republic of the Soviet Union. 

The early 1930s saw a man-made famine (Holodomor) of staggering 

proportions which starved at least 4 million people and hundreds of 

thousands of intellectuals and citizens who opposed the Soviet regime 

were either shot by Stalin’s firing squads or exiled to Siberia. Then in 

the 1940s, Ukraine was devastated by Nazi Germany and the Soviet 

Union; where thousands of hundred thousands died at the front and at 

home. Into the post-war era reconstruction made Ukraine a developed 

industrial and agricultural country once again, but under the tyranny of 

the communist regime. 

Ukraine became somewhat different in the 1980s, this was the time 

of growing national awareness and social unrest. Then on August 24, 

1991, Ukraine proclaimed independence. Ukraine faced a multitude of 

very difficult tasks which had to be solved in the relatively short postindependent 

period; creation of a new political system, new state law, a 

new system of national security and defence, involvement internationally. 

Ukraine wanted to establish a working relationship with the European 

Union and NATO. 

At the present time, Ukraine is a presidential parliamentary republic. 

Ukraine stands at a significant crossroad, a country that must be strong 

to respect its native heritage and must choose between democratic 

values. Ukraine cannot be pressured by autocratic imperialist abyss. 

Ukraine must grow and reform itself economically being indispensable 

to political and national survival. It would be a tragedy if after 27 years 

of independence, Ukraine would sacrifice its statehood. There is much 

to be done by Ukraine on a substantive basis to have a place on the 

international stage and to continue the road to independence. 

Ukraine’s task is to trace the fate of the Ukrainian people through the 

centuries to explain why Ukrainian history has been so consistently ignored 

in modern times. Also to point out the process by which Ukraine 

can again appear upon the maps of the world as a vibrant dynamic state, 

a nation that has a long flourished history to share with the world. УВ

Ukraine’s 

nationalist 

prospect

February 2018 marks 4 years of the Revolution of 

Dignity - a turning point in Ukraine’s modern history 

that catalyzed nation-building and structural 

reform. The events that transpired on the streets 

of Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and Donetsk, Winnipeg and 

Toronto, inspired 80,000 more Canadians to express 

pride in their Ukrainian background as indicated in 

the 2016 census (as compared to the 2011 census).

ollowing Viktor Yanukovych’s rise to power, a common 

feeling of apathy and hopelessness had taken hold 

of Ukrainian people. In the spring of 2013, Nationalist 

members of Ukraine’s parliament initiated the nationwide: 

“Rise Ukraine!” campaign to remove Viktor Yanukovych from 

office. Three months later, their energy of protests burst into 

what is known as the ‘Euromaidan’ rally. The Nationalists provided 

the impetus and crucial manpower, setting the stage for 

the revolt that toppled the Yanukovych kleptocratic regime. 

Twenty- three heroes of the “Heavenly Hundred” were 

members and supporters of Svoboda, a true grassroots party 

that nationally debuted in the 2012 parliamentary elections. 

Thirty-Six Members of Parliament ended the ruling pro-Russian 

coalition practice of terrorizing democratic parliamentarians 

into adopting destructive legislation. 

As nationalism gained traction and popularity, new organizations 

formed, looking to capitalize on national enthusiasm. 

Patriotic rhetoric reverberated across the entire political spectrum. 

Nationalist ideological framework, developed over decades, 

had been appropriated by dubious political projects, old opportunist 

and career politicians. In the meantime, the Nationalists 

switched focus to supporting the war effort and to bolstering the 

country’s defense capabilities in the face of Russian aggression. 

The Nationalists have now filled the void in Ukraine’s security 

structure previously dominated by Russian moles. The Nationalists 

successfully performed covert counter-intelligence and 

anti-terrorist operations. 

Patriotic Nationalist paramilitaries have also united forces 

to establish ‘Right Sector’ - a platform for private citizens eager 

to take part in the armed struggle for Ukraine’s sovereignty. 

With nearly 10,000 volunteers at its peak, the unit demonstrated 

extraordinary courage and professionalism in the fiercest 

battles of the war. Raised in hostile and often pro-Russian 

environments of Ukraine’s industrial east, uncompromising 

patriotic groups formed over a dozen military battalions, one 

of the most notable being “Azov”. 

Now a regiment of the National Guard, the unit liberated 

Mariupol and was the first in Ukraine to implement NATO military 

standards. Both Azov and Right Sector have since evolved 

from battlefield fraternities to full fledged political forces. 

Svoboda went to the extreme of expelling draft dodgers 

from their party, urging the government to cut trade and diplomatic 

ties with Russia and promoting the militarization of society. 

They were determined to elevate the country out of the 

legal limbo over the “anti-terrorist operation” to which the war 

was relegated since the start of Russian military intervention. 

The Party created, manned and financed a mechanized army 

unit and police battalion, led by Oleksandr Pysarenko, Captain 

of Team Ukraine, 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto. Oleksandr 

Pysarenko chairs the Legion of Svoboda, a non-profit organization 

for its 1000 veterans who fought in the war zone. 

The inclusion of city mayors, councillors, legislators and 

parliamentarians who served on the front lines distinguishes 

Svoboda as the only major political party dedicated to maintaining 

its discipline and integrity for 27 consecutive years. 

Thousands of other nationalists joined the Armed Forces, the 

National Guard and the Police hoping to replace demoralized 

Soviet-era officers and to implement much needed changes. 

While there have been improvements in economic relations, 

education, healthcare, defense and energy sectors, halfheartedness 

defines the work of president Poroshenko and 

his coalition with former Yanukovych allies. Much of their 

successful anti-corruption work was done not because of, but 

in spite of their actions. They espouse values and ideas that 

Nationalists have been embracing since their inception. Consequently, 

the Nationalists have become targets of smear campaigns 

orchestrated by suspicious political operatives and other 

groups operating under the auspices of unchallenged oligarchic 

clans. 

To their own detriment, Nationalists tended to dismiss libel 

as unimportant. However, in recent years, not surprisingly, 

Svoboda’s leader Oleh Tiahnybok won all defamation lawsuits 

against high profile public officials, regional, national and 

international media titans, including German newspaper Süddeutsche 

Zeitung. 


In an attempt to monopolize their power, the current parliamentary 

parties legislated state funding for themselves, with 

total spending to top one billion hryvnias this year alone. It is 

said that the bulk of the money is dedicated to the governing 

Petro Poroshenko Bloc and People’s Front parties. The records 

indicate that these parties declare pennies in their expenses,

avoid reporting spending and possess few to no registered 

branches (offices) across the country. 

As a comparison, outsider Svoboda claims over 500 registered 

branches for 20,000 members. Unlike the virtual parties 

lobbying for narrow political interests, Nationalists are consistent 

in their efforts to root out corruption. The Nationalists lead 

by example in their civic and professional duties. They have 

rendered disproportionate sacrifices for Ukraine’s sovereignty 

and independence. 

In 2017, Svoboda, National Corps (Azov), Right Sector and 

other organizations signed a unity manifesto, overcoming 

years of disagreements. 

Svoboda’s last election-related alliance with disparate UDAR 

and with Batkivschyna emerged as a futile conjuncture, as the 

two allies merely furthered their political agendas after their 

unscrupulous revolutionary work had been completed. 

This alliance of ideological partners provides an alternative 

roadmap to promoting the country’s interests and achieving 

reforms. The agreement includes some novice and primarily 

non-election related clauses; pertaining to lustration; recall 

elections; election of judges; antitrust and money laundering 

regulations; wealth and expat repatriation; the Ukrainian national 

church; security and defense, including the idea of Intermarium. 

The agreement is destined to lead the largest consolidation 

of nationalistic efforts in an independent Ukraine, and 

creating another powerful player on the world stage. УВ
