Nunavik Enrolment Office
From October 1, 2016 - September 30, 2017, it was “business
as usual” for the Nunavik Enrolment Office (NEO) and its skillful
Registrar. It meant providing ongoing services to Nunavik beneficiaries
in matters related to the maintenance of the registration of Inuit
beneficiaries, in accordance with the decisions of the Community
Enrolment Committees. In some cases, it meant ensuring follow
up on applications for enrolment which had been decided upon
by the local Community Enrolment Committees. For others, it was
the confirmation of beneficiary statuses and benefits in accordance
with the terms of travel, education or health programs.
The NEO is glad to report being successful in the recognition of
the Aboriginal status of a person of Inuit ancestry who had been
legally adopted at birth by non-Aboriginal adoptive parents. This
person, although not having a beneficiary status under the James
Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, will from now on be entitled
to all programs and benefits made available to Aboriginal people
in Canada. This should serve as an interesting precedent, providing

Le Bureau d’inscriptions du Nunavik a connu une année sans
soubresauts sous l’habile direction de sa registraire. Les services
habituels ont continué d’être offerts aux bénéficiaires du Nunavik
concernant l’inscription des bénéficiaires Inuit conformément aux
décisions des comités d’inscription locaux. Dans certains cas il
fallait assurer le suivi des demandes ayant fait l’objet de décisions
de la part des comités d’inscription locaux, et à d’autres moments,
il s’agissait de confirmer le statut de certains bénéficiaires afin
d’établir à quels types d’avantages ils avaient droit en vertu des
programmes existants de déplacements, d’éducation ou de santé.
Le Bureau d’inscriptions du Nunavik est heureux d’annoncer
avoir réussi à reconnaître le statut autochtone d’une personne d’ascendance
Inuit qui avait été légalement adoptée à la naissance par
des parents adoptifs non autochtones. Bien que cette personne ne
soit pas reconnue à titre de bénéficiaire en vertu de la Convention
de la Baie-James et du Nord québécois, elle aura dorénavant droit
à tous les programmes et avantages offerts aux autochtones du
