A SURPRISE royal visitor has
made a special appearance
in celebration of Riccarton’s
Margaret Stoddart Retirement
Village’s 25 th birthday.
Her Majesty the Queen – also
known as village townhouse
resident Veronica Shepherd –
popped into the village but was
unable to stay for celebratory
tea, cake and oysters.
“I’m seeing your Prime Minister
Jacinda Ardern tomorrow so
I’ve got to get back. My very best
wishes and congratulations on
your 25 th anniversary,” she said.
The village was opened in
1993 and was named in honour
of the talented Canterbury
painter.
Staff dressed in Victorian
outfits in honour of the village’s
namesake, and residents Janet
Emeleus and Audrey Burton
took the theme to heart by
dressing as Margaret Stoddart
and her mother Anna.
Ryman Healthcare chief
executive Gordon MacLeod
said the village would always
hold a special place in his heart
– it was his nana’s home for six
years.
She lived in a townhouse
before moving to the rest home,
and visiting Margaret Stoddart
Avenue
close to
banning
heavy
vehicles
LODESTAR AVE and Lady
Wigram Retirement Village
residents may be a step closer to
having heavy vehicles banned
from driving on their street.
It comes as operational
guidelines for the new Traffic and
Parking Bylaw are close to being
finalised.
Residents have been pleading
with the city council, Halswell
Ward city councillor Anne
Galloway and Wigram MP
Megan Woods to put restrictions
on heavy vehicles which have
been keeping them awake at night
for a year.
In October, village owner John
Tooby launched a verbal attack
on four elderly residents, while
being interviewed about a sign
they had put up on a village fence
protesting noisy trucks. A resident
then removed the sign and Mr
Tooby later apologised for the
ordeal.
City council manager
operations transport Steffan
Thomas said the guidelines have
been drafted and circulated.
