Students environmentally
friendly business venture
•From page 1
The group is selling steel
straws, designed to be sleek and
trendy, as an alternative to singleuse
plastic ones.
“Our product will help reduce
single-use straws and will help
reduce plastic in the ocean and
we feel great about that,” Hannah
said.
They also donate
some of their
profits to a charity
dedicated to the
environment.
Said Eloise: “$2
from each purchase
gets donated to
the charity Sea
Cleaners. They go
around and clean
up oceans around
New Zealand and
we are hoping
our customers get
behind that and
want to support it.”
Suck it Straws
recently won the
Canterbury regional
marketing award for a video the
students made promoting the
product. It came with a $200
prize.
Said Melissa: “It’s really
exciting, but also quite funny
to us, because when we were
making it we were just trying
Suck it Straws, won a
Canterbury regional
marketing award for a
promotional video.
to have fun. We wanted it to be
funny so we were really quite
shocked when we won.”
The money will help the
business, Melissa said.
The most exciting part of the
journey so far was receiving the
straws.
Said Alli: “It was just so cool
seeing what we’ve designed arrive
here. We were all
really proud.”
They have sold
more than 60
straws so far and
are happy with
their progress, she
said.
The group will
continue promoting
and selling the
straws.
Said Melissa:
“The business is
supposed to wrap
up in November
but we’ve been
talking about
keeping it going
even after that.
“We’ve all really enjoyed
the process and are passionate
about it, so it’s something we are
thinking about.”
