President Jacob Zuma in his State of the Nation
Address said: ‘I would like to appeal to all
our people to join hands as they always do, as
we deal decisively with the triple challenges of
unemployment, poverty and inequality. Nobody
will do this for us, it is in our hands. And we all
equal to the task”.
Walmer Hydroponic Cooperative is an agricultural
Coop that was established in 2006 by a
group of 10 people of Walmer location and registered
in 2007. They started this project with the
aim to address food sustainment measures, to
decrease unemployment by creating opportunities
of better access to agricultural markets with
a mandate to devise means and ways to draw
more residents into the project to turn around
current trajectories that exist in the township and
provide agricultural skills to unskilled people of
the community.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality built tunnels
for them and provided with all working
equipment and tools. Thina Sinako funded the
project with a big infrastructure where they have
an office, boardroom and cool room then also
sponsored the project with two bakkies to deliver
to markets.
The project has created 12 permanent jobs
for people from the community. In 2011 the project
took 50 youth members from the community
and trained them on Crop management. Farming
easy program was also conducted by Agri-Seta.
Currently the project has students from Nelson
Mandela Metropolitan University who are doing
their internship. They assist mostly with marketing
as well as administration work and they
have been a great asset to the project.
The project is producing Baby marrow, Patty
pans, peppers, tomatoes, and cocktail tomatoes.
All these crops are delivered to Fruit & Veg, Spar,
some restaurants, as well as Somalian shops
around Walmer and also to the public.
Starting a business is never an easy road to
travel, if you have a vision and a goal you must
persevere and be patient and never lose the
drive”, those were Mr Tyokwana’s words one of
the founders during the community radio slot at
Nkqubela FM organized by Government Communication
and Information System (GCIS) in
his last words during the radio interview for those
who would like to start their businesses and those
who are struggling to sustain them.
The project is based at Walmer in Heugh
Road. Anyone who would like to place an order
can call their office at 041-587 5130 from 08:00
- 16:00 or call Mr Tyokwana at 082 794 5340.
