Foreword 

In what seems like the blink of an eye, we have already crossed the halfway 

mark of the year. 

The first half of 2009 was undoubtedly an eventful one. After recovering from 

the nematode infestation that plagued our course towards the second half 

of last year, we were unfortunately hit by the Sumatran winds in March. The 

torrent uprooted over 200 trees in the golf course and caused various other 

physical damages around the club, costing the Club $144,351 in repairs and 

lost income. Then the Management had to suddenly go into overdrive mode as 

the unexpected take-over of the Driving Range and Pro Shop forced a flurry of 

activities to ensure uninterrupted supplies and services to members. It did not 

help matters when the H1N1 Flu struck the world with fear and people held 

back from golfing during the initial stages. 

Thankfully, the Annual General Meeting was a bright spark amidst a dreary 

first six months. With members unanimously supporting the Club’s proposal to 

renovate the golf course and the hotel development project receiving heartening 

applause from the floor, it seemed like this stamp of approval somehow opened 

an auspicious door for the Club. We now have a more exciting calendar for the 

second half, a new Snacks corner for the Golfers’ Terrace, a new operator for 

our Pro Shop, new enthusiastic partners for our events and even our own JCClabelled 

wine to boot! 

For those into all-things Korean, we heard you. We are bringing back the 

Korean Nite on 25 July with a more exciting menu and entertainment, and we 

are going all out to give you a heady wine-and-dine Peranakan evening on 22 

August as we pair savoury Peranakan delights with exquisite wines from France. 

August will also see the return of our annual Jurong Charity Open and we hope 

members will continue to extend their fullest support for the event and help the 

poor and disadvantaged. 

Then kick back and enjoy our hallmark Oktoberfest celebration, now extended 

to a 2-day fiesta on 16 and 17 October. Yes, the second half is all about shaking 

off the gloom and ringing in the bloom! To add to the good news, Staffield 

Country Resort and Kelab Golf Serawak have joined our network of reciprocal 

clubs. Turn to page 4 of this issue and acquaint yourself with our list of 40 

reciprocal clubs worldwide – and counting!

Dear members, 

Last week I played golf with two special guests and a fellow JCC member. At 

the first hole after the green was cleared, my fellow JCC member hit his second 

shot. He sliced and the ball went all the way towards the golfers walking 

towards the second tee box. I heard the caddy and others shouting. The ball 

landed close to one of the golfers. 

When my fellow golfer went to apologise, he was angrily scolded. My fellow 

golfer explained and apologised profusely but despite his explanation, I could 

see the other golfer was not satisfied. In my mind I thought there will be a 

complaint made soon. Then at the next hole a ball landed close to my fellow 

golfer’s feet. A golfer ran up to him and apologised. It turned out to be the golfer 

who scolded him. My fellow golfer accepted the apology and both ended up 

smiling at each other at the Golfers’ Terrace. 

My reason for relating this episode is to highlight the hazards of golfing. Players 

must be more vigilant and careful; golfers, including myself, must at some 

time make mistakes. Let us be more understanding and tolerant and not take 

each other to task immediately. An apology should go a long way. Of course 

dangerous play has to be cautioned through the proper channel. 

However at times, incidents get nasty and members unhappy with the 

settlement outcome imposed by the Club wants to sue. By all means go ahead, 

as members do have that recourse. Each time the Club is threatened by a 

lawsuit or is sued, the Club has to put aside a sum of money for lawyers and 

Management will have to spend hours on the case instead of doing club work 

for members. The Club must surely have recourse to such costs. 

The GC is studying to change club rules to allow the Club to claim all 

indemnity costs from the member who sues the Club and lost in court. Also, 

those who sue and then withdraw must pay indemnity cost. 

I am trying to avoid unhappy situations that will bring down the name and 

value of the Club. What is the use of improved physical changes if not 

accompanied by a more tolerant social lifestyle? 

Improved physical changes have taken longer than I expected. This is because 

of technical hitches, prolonged negotiation, land valuation and bureaucratic 

requirements. 

The improvement and changes we want to make, i.e. clubhouse and golf 

course, have to move in tandem. We do both together. We cannot wait for the 

hotel development to come on stream. We must move ahead. At the last AGM, 

the GC floated the idea of members coming up with upfront payment of doing 

up the Club and being reimbursed over the years with the income stream from 

the hotel. This idea was well received and details are being worked out. We will 

discuss this with members before its implementation.

Shake, Rattle and Roll! 

That was what happened within the Management tiers of 

JCC when the core of our senior officers in the Social & 

Recreational department left in May and June recently to 

pursue greater opportunities elsewhere. 

First to fly the coop was Shirlee Quah, who joined us 

as S&R Executive (Sports) in March 2008. Leaving to 

pursue her studies, Shirlee is replaced by Dolly Huang 

who recently joined us in June and comes equipped with 

a Diploma in Sports & Wellness Management. Dolly 

herself is no greenhorn to 

the club and sporting scene, 

having seen her own action 

as an Events Facilitator with 

an international health and 

fitness organisation, as Floor 

Trainer in a well-known fitness 

chain as well as Programmes 

Executive for a local social 

club. 

Visions of The Green 

Jurong Country Club is proud to showcase the work of 

local budding artist Christina Chen. 

Inspired by the beauty of our lakeside golf course, 

Christina has immortalized our emerald greens into six 

beautiful oil paintings. Two of these have been kindly 

donated to the Club while the other four were placed 

on sale at our inaugural Art for Charity exhibition in 

January this year. 


Next to leave were Eunice Seoh and Joseph Sim, who 

joined us in December 2007 as S&R Executive (Social) 

and March 2008 as S&R Manager respectively. Eunice left 

to pursue greener pastures while the latter left to pursue 

personal interests. While the Club was sad to see them 

go, it gave opportunity for other staff to be promoted in 

recognition of their services. 

In this respect, the Club moved

Pang, to helm the new S&R 

team as Assistant. S&R Manager 

while F&B Executive, Callista 

Wong now takes on the role of 

Acting Assistant F&B Manager in 

recognition of her capabilities. 

Being proud owners of our golf course, the Club had undertaken to purchase 

these paintings for posterity. We invite members to share in preserving a piece 

of history through these beautiful works of art. These paintings will in future line 

the halls of our new facilities so that more members, guests and visitors can 

appreciate and share the beauty of our golf course. 

Play your part in safeguarding our Club’s treasures. Adopt a painting 

individually, or with your friends. In appreciation of your contribution, your 

name will be indicated on a plaque and commemorated through the years.

Singapore and Jurong 

Country Club, our GC 

member Nigel Leach bade 

goodbye in May 2009 

when he and his family 

had to return to the United 

Kingdom at the end of his 

term in Singapore. 

During his ten years here, 

Nigel had been a stalwart 

supporter of the Club’s 

activities. Member since June 

2004, Nigel served on various 

committees, starting with Golf 

from April 2005 to March 

2006, then as Vice-Captain 

and Chairman of the Handicap 

Committee from April 2006 to March 2008. In April 

2008, he was elected to the GC and served as Chairman 

of the Communication and Channels Committee (C&C 

Committee) from April 2008 to May 2009.

Under the direction of KK, the Committee will 

focus efforts on encouraging greater two-way 

communication and feedback between members 

and the Club, starting with the introduction of 

more dialogue sessions between members and 

chairmen of various sub-committees. The aim 

would be to provide a platform for members to 

learn more about the responsibilities of each 

committee and their efforts, as well as provide 

suggestions and 

constructive 

feedback on their 

activities so far.

News 

Nigel (left) thanks all members for the generous friendships and 

enjoyable golf during his years in Singapore 

Since his resignation, Vice-President of the Club, Mr K 

K Lim, who is also the Chairman of the Organisational 

Effectiveness Committee, had been appointed to helm the 

C&C Committee. 

In replacement of Nigel’s position on the General 

Committee, the GC had also approved the appointment of 

P K Wong to the GC. P K, who has extensive experience in 

the F&B and hotel industry, has been voluntarily helping 

the Club in its F&B operations and service quality through 

his involvement in the Lifestyle Committee. P K’s most 

recent contribution to the Club was a training session for 

the F&B team held on 20 May with the F&B Manager, 

Chef and the various kitchen staff of the Green Banyan/ 

Golfers’ Terrace. 

As we bid adieu to Nigel and wish him all the best as 

he heads home, we

Market Price of Club Membership 

The membership price for our Local Transferable Golf Membership saw a 

climb in June from the previous transacted price of $41,700 in May (depicted 

by the blue line). A continued increase was observed in Transferable Social 

memberships, which saw the latest transacted price rise to $4,000 in June, up 

from the previous transacted price of $3,900 in May and $3,500 in February.

SGA League 2009 

Jurong’s “a” teaM finisHes siXtH 

The 2009 SGA Inter-Club League season came to a 

conclusion on Sunday 19 April at Sentosa. NSRCC’s 

teams who secured the championship for all 3 divisions 

dominated the weather-prone league season. 

After the final leg, Jurong’s only surviving team, the “A” 

team, finished in sixth place. Our Premier and “B” teams 

did not qualify for the finals. 

NSRCC won the Premier Division on 876, ten strokes 

ahead of second placed SICC. The premier leaguers 

completed four of the five legs. The “A” Division 

completed only two of five legs. NSRCC won this division 

on 489 strokes with Raffles six strokes adrift in second 

place. 

The “B” Division, which saw the leg in JCC called off 

because of the Sumatran winds, also completed 4 legs 

and saw NSRCC dominating proceedings from the off and 

eventually won with their 1014, twenty-seven strokes to 

spare from second placed Sembawang. 

Players who represented Jurong in the Premier League 

were Leon See (4 games), Gene Kwek (3), Erwyn Lam (3), 

Nigel Leach (2), Chia Chong Zheng (2) and Jesse Yap (2). 

The “A” Division representatives were C C Chan (4 games), 

Lam Tih Kai (4), Jimmy Lim (4), Daniel Lo (3), Naranjan 

Singh (2), Martin Hynes (2) and Craig Carlisle (1) while 

Jeffrey Wong (3 games), Winston Baptista (3), Ross Tan (2), 

Colin Foo (2), Quek Han Tiong (2), Ved Narayan (2) and 

Thiang Shiang Hiang (2) played in the “B” Division.

Our two ladies’ teams enjoyed one 

of their best league seasons in recent 

times when both the “A” and “B” 

teams streaked home in second place. 

For the “B” team, this was a repeat of 

their performance last year when they 

finished runners-up to Sembawang. 

The last time the “A” team came 

in runners-up was in 2002. For the 

record, the last time Jurong were 

crowned champions was in 1988. 

In the Premier Division, Warren won 

the championship by a single stroke 

from Tanah Merah. Jurong did not 

field a team in this division. 

Our ‘A’ team finished just seven 

strokes behind champions SICC 

who took a huge advantage at 

the penultimate match when they 

finished 17 strokes ahead of Jurong. 

The “B” team was leading the table by 

four strokes with just the final game 

to be played. This time it was Raffles 

that pipped us to the post when they 

finished strongly at the Laguna leg 

pushing Jurong into second place. 

Jurong’s representatives in the “A” 

team were Irene Tan (6 games), 

Paula Chepelsky (6), Mill Lim (5) and 

Jang Sang Yi (1) while the “B” team 

members were Susan Mah (6 games), 

Ivy Yuen (6), Jasmine Ng (5) and 

Ngiow Lee Kim (1) 

Well done ladies! Hope you will do 

one better next year.

On the seventeenth hole, a very careful player was studying the green. First, he 

got down on his hands and knees to check out the turf between his ball and the 

hole. Then he flicked several pieces of grass out of the way. Next, he held up a 

wet finger to try out the direction of the wind. Then turning to his caddie he asked: 

“Was the green mowed this morning?” 

Caddie replied seriously, “Yes, sir.”

Lim Swe Chew. Starting off as resident Pro 

with the Club way back in 1975, Swe Chew first 

operated the Pro Shop under the management’s

his own a few years later. Throughout three decades 

of partnership, Swe Chew had extended his fullest

REEL FUN! 

More than 35 fishermen and their families experienced a 

night of exciting fishing action at the 2nd Nine halfway 

house pond of the Jurong Course on Sunday 3 May. 

The night’s action began with treating the fishermen 

and their families to a sumptuous BBQ dinner 

spread at the 2nd Nine halfway house. After filling 

their tummies, all took up “arms” and found strategic 

positions around the pond to battle with the fishes for 

the night. 

A total of 36 fishes were reeled in, with the largest weighing 

3.5 kg. Dennis Ng, Casey Chew and Dennis Yeo reeled in 15 fishes 

amongst them, winning them the title of Top Anglers for the night! 

The best way to enjoy this event, if you were not there, would be to 

savour them through these photos. Otherwise, come join us at our 

next Fishing Competition on Sunday, 6 September.

TOASTMASTERS 

On 22 April, members had a chance to explore being part of the international 

Toastmasters when a demonstration session was held here in Jurong Country Club 

for the first time. 

Understanding that being able to present oneself well is a pre-requisite in any 

job or social situation, and that many of us feel shy when we are suddenly put to 

the mike, the Club decided to form a Toastmasters chapter to help both members 

and staff to overcome the challenge of public speaking. It definitely turned out 

to be a very interesting and engaging session, and members who 

attended agreed it was definitely an opportunity to help build one’s 

confidence and presentation skills. 

We would like to thank Kris Tay, Goh Wei Koon and Poh Kim 

Siong for taking out their precious time to conduct this preview to 

Toastmasters for us! For those interested in joining us for the next 

Toastmasters, do watch out for more news on the Club’s notice 

boards! 

When Parents and 

Children Fight! 

On the afternoon of 

Saturday, 18 April, the 

Club’s Table Tennis Centre 

saw a group of parents and 

children enthusiastically 

waiting for their chance to 

battle it out on our pingpong 

tables! Fully equipped 

with their battle amours, 

bats and lots of gusto, the Table Tennis Centre quickly 

transformed into a battleground where children could 

finally “have it out” with their parents! 

It was an exciting and fun afternoon indeed! The young 

energetic children gave their parents a worthy fight, while 

parents too showed great prowess and skill. In the end, the 

Teo family walked away 

with first prize, followed 

closely by the Yuens and 

Queks.

JCC fielded a team of 8 players for this event which was 

held from 14 March to 19 April this year. Appreciations are 

in order for Team Captain Harold Choi and his members 

Darryl Koh, Elton Toh, Erik Goh, Tan Hong Wei, Jethro 

Wang, Timothy Soon and last but not least, Coach Ong Kim 

Hock for their spirit and dedication over the 6-week league 

games. 

During these long period of tough matches and visiting 

from club to club, our team members played their best 

against opponents like Chinese Swimming Club, National 

University of Singapore Society, Nanyang Technology 

University, Serangoon Gardens Country Club, National 

Service Resort and Country Club and the Oxbridge Club. 

KUDOS to our JCC Tennis Team! We hope that everyone 

enjoyed themselves during the matches and we wish to see 

everyone again for the next year Singles League in 2010!

Sunday 31 May was a grand day of 

well-deserved celebrations for the 

boys and girls of the Jurong Swim 

Team as they brought back 18 gold 

medals from the “Fun in the Sun” 

Swim Meet hosted at The Pines. 

A total of 41 of our Jurong swimmers 

under the tutelage of Coach Leonard 

attended the Meet, which saw over 

a hundred participants from various 

clubs. This was the second year our 

Club was invited and last year’s initial 

experience gave us opportunity to 

better our performance, such that 

Jurong was crowned the overall 

winner for the event!
