Captain’s Message 

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that we are now in the second phase of our Golf 

Course Upgrading Project, and upgrading works on our back nine is progressing steadily. 

FOREWORD 

To date, site clearing and removal of organic materials from Holes 10 to 18 have 

been fully completed; and so have final shaping works on the new Teeing Ground, 

Greens and Bunkers at Holes 10 to 14, which are ready for grass planting. We are also 

simultaneously carrying out sand-capping works on the fairways and roughs at Holes 11 

to 13, which will be turfed shortly. 

For the lakes at Holes 10 and 13, rubble -pitching works to the edge of the ponds have 

been completed. Meanwhile over at the ponds of Holes 14, 15 and 16, earthwork, 

rubble pitching, installation of sub-soil drainage, irrigation pipes and sandcapping 

are at the 50% completion mark and progressing sing well. 

Major earthworks have also commenced at Holes 

17 and 18, and this of course included the old 18th 

Green, which was formerly used as a short game 

practice area. We had to release the 18th Green to 

the contractors on 26 September as part of the whole upgrading project, as earthworks 

are scheduled for completion by end December, by which time it should also be ready for 

planting. We are sorry that members will need to be inconvenienced in the meantime and 

seek your kind understanding and cooperation as a short game facility will not be available 

for the time being. The Club is currently examining a new short game facility. 

To this end, I am pleased to announce that the Club is working hand in hand with our 

contractors to keep to our scheduled target of having the full 18 holes ready and complete 

by the first quarter of next year. 

Since the new first nine opened in May this year, members had been flocking back to 

JCC. The response has indeed been most encouraging. We received numerous positive 

feedback on the improved course conditions, in particular for our new Paspalum Greens 

which have been maintained to the highest standards, thanks to our maintenance crew. 

More golfers are also pitching in to repair pitch marks on the greens and replace divots on 

the fairways. Thank you all for your co-operation in helping us maintain the course and for 

practicing good golf etiquette. 

And now for more good news – it seems our Par 3 at Holes 3 and 6 have proven to 

be relatively easy. Since opening day on 23 May, we have celebrated five hole-inone 

achievements, with Peter Kwa scoring two aces at Hole 3 within just four days. 

Congratulations to Peter on his wonderful feat! 

Talking about feats, congratulations are also in order for our members Leon See, Colin 

Foo, Bruun Juha Petri and Geoff Stimpson who bagged this year’s Club Champion, 

Intermediate Club Champion, Crocodile Cup Champion and Matchplay Champion titles 

respectively. I would also like to record my appreciation to all our SGA League players 

for contributing their time & effort to represent the Club in this year’s SGA League which 

ended on 28 August. Our players played their best in their outings and came in 5th OCB 

in the A Division. I would like to commend our league team captains, Naranjan Singh 

(Senior division), Kim Ki Bong (Premier division), Andrew Cher (A Division) and Ross Tan 

(B Division) for successfully fostering camaraderie and team spirit in our members, and for 

encouraging our players to practice regularly and participate in the league games. 

I would also like to thank our Ladies’ SLGA league players who flew the JCC flag high. 

Our Ladies’ B Team did our club proud by winning the B Division. Overall our ladies 

came in third place for the SLGA League 2011. Congratulations to our Lady Captain, Low 

Ju Fern for her dedication and commitment in leading our team to a fine finish for the 

season.

The Management 

The Management would like to inform our members 

that there was an administration glitch in the August 

statement of accounts to some of our members. Our 

investigation confirms that the integrity of the system 

records were not compromised in any way and that 

the error was entirely due to a printing problem. The 

Management wants to assure all members that this 

was an isolated incident and seek your understanding 

on the matter. In view of this issue, we have put in 

place further control steps which include the use of 

a dedicated printer for the end-of-month statement

upgrading works commencing on 15 Jul 2011 and it is 

expected to be completed by 14 Jul 2013. During this 

period, there will be a hole by hole upgrading of greens, 

bunkers and sub-soil drainage on fairways. Please note 

that the whole golf course will continue to be playable 

and open for tournaments throughout the duration of the 

upgrading works as temporary greens will be provided.

The Cut Western Australia 

Jurong Country Club has signed on a new special access 

arrangement with The Cut in Perth for a period of 2 years 

from 1 Sep 2011 to 31 Aug 2013. This access arrangement 

allows visiting (Golfing) members to use Golfing Facilities of 

the Host Club at 40% of the prevailing Visitor’s Green Fees. 

The Cut Golf Course is located just 1 hour from Perth by 

the popular seaside town of Mandurah. Voted Western 

Australia’s number one golf course in 2008/09 and ranked

Be A Wine Connoisseur 

A Blind Wine Tasting event was held at the Albizia 1 

on Fri, 16 Sep. A panel of members were selected to 

participate in this event to choose wines for the upcoming 

wine list at JCC, which includes both house pours and 

premium wines. Participants evaluated the wines based 

on specific criteria of visual appeal, aroma, sensation, 

taste and finish. A scoring was also done to ensure an 

accurate result. This was a remarkable experience for both 

the management and participants as it involved members 

on the selection of wines for the club. The management

Phase Two Successful 

And Closed 

Good news as we draw into Q4 of the year! The Club’s 

second phase of membership drive that was open for sale 

from 16 Dec to 18 Aug this year has come to a successful 

close. All numbers of allocated membership openings have 

been fully taken up. The Club’s membership value in the 

open market has also moved up 20% since our initial prelaunch 

in October last year. 

On 26 August, the Club has moved into Phase 3a of our 

membership launch, which continues to offer an exclusive 

early bird price for a limited period, for those who are keen 

to purchase a Transferable Golfing Membership before the 

official opening of the Club’s new 18 holes. The price is 

planned for to be even higher once upgrading works are

Executive, Jasmine Thien. Jasmine has a B.A in Visual Communication 

Design from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia. As 

a golf enthusiast, she went to Professional Golfer’s Career College (PGCC), 

Temecula, California to study all business aspects in the golf industry. 

She then graduated from PGCC with a Specialized Associate’s Degree 

in Professional Golf Management. Having spent 6 years in Los Angeles, 

California, Jasmine has worked as an Assistant Professional at Lost Canyons 

Golf Club in Simi Valley and as a Buyer/Merchandiser for several private 

country clubs such as Los Angeles Country Club. With her education 

background and overseas experiences, we are happy to have Jasmine as 

part of the HGS team.

Jurong Country Club Championship 2011 

The annual Jurong Country Club Championship was held in the month of 

August with the qualifying round for the Crocodile Cup on Sat, 13 August and 

the Club Championship/Intermediate Cup on Sat, 20 August. 

Due to inclement weather, the qualifying round of the Crocodile Cup was 

abandoned and the event was reduced to 3 rounds. 13 members continued 

with the 3 rounds and eventually, the winner 

was Bruun Juha Petri who consistently played 

a 3 round total of 262 with gross scores of (88, 

86 & 88). He pipped his nearest rival, Ho Chye 

Huat by 2 strokes who returned with gross 

scores of (86, 91 & 87). Third placing went to 

Chee Fook Seng who returned gross scores of 

(93, 86 & 87) making a total of 266. 

Describing Hole #7 as a challenge on the 

course, Juha’s response to winning the 

Crocodile Cup was jovial. He said “It is quite a 

big surprise as I haven’t been playing too long. 

It was nice to win, although enjoying the game is most important to me. 

For the Intermediate Cup, the 4 rounds were contested keenly with 10 members 

making it to the final round on Sunday, 4 Sep. Colin Foo regained his form and 

won the Championship with his 4 day gross 

score of 344 (88, 83, 90 & 83). His closest 

rival was Ang Hoon Siang, who came in 

with a total of 350 (86, 85, 92 & 87). It has 

been an excellent run for Colin as he also 

won the Club Matchplay competition in 

July partnering Stanley Ang. 

This year’s Club Championship spotted a 

new winner, as we did not see the entry 

of Edwin Pereira who was the 2010 

champion due to his work schedule. 

The 2011 Club Championship winner Leon See played superb golf in the 

first 2 rounds and despite a shaky 3rd round of 80, he managed to maintain 

the lead to clinch the Club Championship. Good Oh gave Leon a close fight 

when he played a gross 67 on the second round but was unable to maintain 

his lead and collapsed with a punishing 81 on the final day, giving Leon the 

title. Leon returned with a gross 72 on the final round and winning the Club 

Championship for 2011. His 4 day total of 302 (75, 75, 80 & 72) was 9 strokes 

ahead of Good Oh who came back with a 311 (80, 67, 83 & 81). The 3rd place 

went to Jung Sang Jin who played in the penultimate flight with Leon and Good 

Oh, returning with his 4 round score of 317 (79, 72, 83 & 83).

is what he had to share: 

At which point did you feel the game 

was most challenging to you and how 

did you overcome it? 

“The most challenging point of the 

game was on the 3rd round where 

the pin positions were the hardest 

I've experienced on the new '9'. 

Having hit a good drive on the 2nd 

hole and losing the ball, 4-putting the 

very next hole was something I had 

to overcome in order to keep up with 

Good Oh.” 

What helped you to win this year? 

“The bi-weekly premier league 

matches leading up to the Club 

Championship helped me a lot with 

handling pressure and giving me 

some competitive exposure against 

different types of golfers from various 

clubs. It was a good 'warm-up' for 

the Club Championship.” 

Do you have any advice to aspiring 

golfers? 

“Golf is a game of nerves. One bad 

shot could ruin your whole mentality 

and a potentially good game. Play 

one shot at a time, take regular deep 

breaths and most of all enjoy your 

golf game whether you're having a 

good or a bad day!”

Club Matchplay Competition 

The Club Matchplay competition was a knockout 

competition held over the weekends of 9 & 10 July, 23 & 

24 July. The qualifying round was held during the A & B 

medals competition on 9 July with the top 8 players (nett 

scores) in the A division partnering in reverse order with the 

top 8 players (nett scores) in the B division. In the quarter 

finals held on 10 July, Dicky Tan (9.4) / Ross Tan (15.3), 

Desmond Tan (9.2) / Jeffrey Wong (12.9), Michael Tan (10.0) 

/ Darrel Tan (12.4) and Stanley Ang (6.2) / Colin Foo (12.3) 

overcame their first round opponents to move into the semifinals 

which was held on 23 July. 

In the semi-finals held on 23 July, the pair of Dicky Tan/Ross 

Tan narrowly beat Desmond Tan/Jeffrey Wong with a score 

of 2/1 to qualify into the final round to meet Stanley Ang / 

Colin Foo who won from Michael Tan / Darrel Tan on 4/3. 

At the final round held on 24 July the combination of Stanley 

Ang / Colin Foo performed brilliantly well to edge out the 

seasoned pair of Dicky Tan / Ross Tan with a fine 3/1 win.

SGA League 2011 Wrap-Up 

The SGA league 2011 ended with the JCC A Division team 

coming in 5th position with 20 points. We came in 11th 

position for the season with 56.5 points. Our Premier team 

finished at 10th position with 13.5 points, B Division at 

11th with 11.5 points and Senior Division at 11th with 

11.5 points. 

We would like to thank all our members for their support, 

time and effort in representing our club in the league. 

Special mention goes out to our Club Captain, Bobby Wee 

and the team captains, who followed our players at their 

events to give encouragement and support at the various 

competition venues. We look forward to another season in 

2012 and will face the coming challenges as a team.

Matchplay Championship Final 

The finals for the Club’s Matchplay Championship turned out 

to be a battle between the young and old. More specifically, 

between 64 year old and 5.1 (handicap index) Geoff 

Stimpson and 21 year old, 2.2 (handicap index) and former 

2006 Matchplay winner Leon See. 

Both SGA League players for JCC, Geoff, who plays in the 

Senior Team, was one up against Leon See, who plays in the 

JCC Premier Team, from the first hole. Halving the second, 

Leon evened the score by the third hole, only to have Geoff’s 

precise approaches edging him out two-up by the sixth, 

when Leon’s tee shot landed in the water and Geoff won the 

hole with a bogey. By the end of the first nine, Geoff was still 

two-up and though Leon fought back to win back the tenth 

hole with a par, he lost it at the eleventh and missed another 

birdie chance at Hole 14 when his putt lipped the hole. 

With only four more holes to go, Geoff duffed his tee shot at 

the Par 3 15th hole, while Leon’s was on the left hand side of 

the green. Leon three-putted the hole for a bogey while Geoff 

halved the hole with a bogey, winning the match four-up 

with three holes to go. 

Congratulations to our Senior Geoff Stimpson for champing 

the match, and to Leon for a most exciting game!

Hole-In-One 

Feature 

Mr Peter Kwa is our latest member 

to score hole-in-ones at our golf 

course. It was our pleasure to 

conduct a short interview with him 

to share his view on this feat. 

Congratulations on your achievement! 

What are your thoughts about scoring 

2 hole-in-ones within 4 days at our golf 

course? 

Peter: After golfing for over 20 years 

without scoring any aces, I was absolutely 

thrilled when I scored my first 2 hole-inones 

at JCC within 4 days. It was amazing 

that both of the hole-in-ones happened at 

Hole 3 in our newly upgraded JCC course. 

I feel very blessed to have achieved this 

feat. 

Hole in one = skill or chance? What is 

your opinion on it? Surely skill must have 

a part to play when you scored 2 hole-inones 

within 4 days! 

Peter: I can truly assure you that I have 

never set this as a goal in my whole life! 

However, for my shot at Hole 3 in JCC I 

can recount to you what I did. I aimed and 

swung at the right edge of the left bunker. 

I also adjusted up the edge because the 

pin was up. Beyond that, there was an 

invisible hand that guided the ball to its 

destination. 

How do you rate your overall experience 

playing at our newly remodeled first 

nine? 

Peter: This new course is really enjoyable 

to play in. You don't need to be a low 

handicapper to play well and each hole is 

reasonably challenging. 

What do you think is the best feature of 

our new nine? 

Peter: I think that our bunkers are great! 

The sand is nice and there are plenty of 

them along each hole. It makes golfing in 

JCC a pleasant experience. 

What satisfies you most in golf? 

Peter: To me, golfing is wonderful living. 

I look forward to the next game before 

going to bed every night. I would like to 

thank all my flight mates, friends, JCC 

members, management and staff for 

sharing this special moment with me.

JCC 9-Pin Tap Bowling 

On Sunday, 31 July, 22 participants took part in this event 

held at Jurong Superbowl. The event was a success and 

the bowlers enjoyed themselves in the fun tournament. 

Participants mingled around with each other with a buffet 

spread lunch provided. We are proud to announce the

Invitational 2011 

A total of 16 players took part in the JCC 

Squash Invitational tournament held in JCC 

from 9 to 11 June. Our Club players did well, 

winning the event and placing JCC at the top 

two spots. Our congratulations go Timothy 

Soh for coming in as Champion of the firstever 

JCC Junior Squash Invitational, and 

Brandon Tan for securing second place! 

Lifesaving Course 2011 

As part of our efforts to introduce more swimming-related activities to 

the Club, an inaugural Lifesaving Course was conducted. Ten brave 

young boys registered for the course, conducted by our very own Head 

Coach Dennis Yeo, to learn about basic lifesaving and different rescue 

techniques. 

After several weeks of intensive classes and training, the boys learnt the 

following: 

• Basic water safety 

• Principles of water rescue 

• Dangers of open water 

• Treatment for cramps 

• Basic rescue techniques (i.e. reach, 

throw, accompanied rescue, tow with 

defensive technique, etc) 

• Resuscitation on land and in water 

To mark the end of their training and put their knowledge and skills to the 

test, the boys went through a specially organized Lifesaving 1, 2, and 3 

combined test on 21 July by the Singapore Life Saving Society (SLSS). The 

boys were eager to pass and not only aced the test, but picked up a few 

tips from the SLSS tester himself.

Masters & Total Immersion Programme aimed at helping 

triathletes refine their swimming technique, improve their 

open water times and interact with other enthusiasts of

The programme will cover three different segments: 

1. Land Exercises. Participants will go through exercises 

aimed at complementing muscle strength in the water. 

2. Stroke correction. The coach will concentrate on drills 

to improve body position in the water, stroke efficiency, 

open water techniques etc. 

3. Training. Focus on endurance and interval training etc.
