Captain’s Message
Some seven months have passed since the opening of the first-nine after renovations. The
response from members has been good and encouraging.
From the well-defined tees to the nicely contoured fairways and large undulating greens
for challenge, it is a refreshing change that has been well-worth the wait.
Now all that we want is to enjoy our beautiful new course. However, we have to ensure we
take good care of it too. A major part of turf care does lie with the course maintenance
crew, and their role is to ensure that mowing is carried out with well-sharpened blades
and be mindful of mowing patterns to check turf stress. With this in mind too, mowing
heights are raised during rainy weather to help cushion against reduced sunlight that
affects growth. This would result in slower greens for a while, but helps to keep the turf
healthy in the long run.
Nonetheless, players have a role to play too. Maintaining our new nine has its own
challenges, especially when the greens are still new. We have opted to plant similar turf
on both greens and tees for a better playing experience, but it is an imported species
from the States. Due to the difference in our climates, the turf needs time to adjust and
adapt to our local weather patterns. As the turf adapts and matures, we can help it along
by repairing pitch marks on the greens. Research has shown that a pitch mark that is
repaired within 10 minutes recovers in 24 hours, whereas one that is repaired 24 hours
later will take weeks to recover.

You should also always repair any pitch marks left on the greens. Use a pitch mark repair
fork and work your way around the edge of the pitch mark and tamp the area down with
the sole of your putter.
Care of the fairways and greens is a must on the course, and failure to do so is unforgivable.
It is an essential part of etiquette to always replace divots on the fairways even if it wasn't
caused by you. Divots are often moved off their spot by birds and rabbits so it is good
practice to replace them and firm them down with your golf shoe.
I look forward to seeing more of our fellow golfers showing their part in caring for the
course, so all of us can have an enjoyable golfing experience.
I would also like to remind all our members to attend the coming Annual General Meeting
on Friday 30 March.

Hello 2012
More than 260 members and guests of JCC had a colourful
night counting down to 2012 on 31 December last year.
Performers such as the “quick-change artist”, hot and flaming
dances, mystifying magic shows and Chinese calligraphy
demonstrations kept the audience in high spirits, and the
crowd had a positive fun night singing and dancing its way
into 2012.

Christmas Light-Up
More than 100 participants joined us for the annual Christmas Light-Up on 10 December last
year. Held at the main clubhouse lobby, Dr Tan Cheng Bock and the S&R Committee welcomed
residents and care-givers from St. Luke Eldercare and Faith Acts to a night of joyful carolling to
celebrate the spirit of Christmas. The guests were treated to a sumptuous dinner at the Green
Banyan and entertained by the Ukeblazers and JCC’s own carollers. Many hearts were warmed by
the genuine surprise and pleasure witnessed on the faces of our elderly guests and children that
night, as Santa surprised them with a visit and gifts. We thank all our members who participated
in the Christmas Light-Up for lighting up our guests’ night and hearts that evening!
Ho-Ho-Ho! Surprise Visit by Santa & His Elves
Members and guests of JCC must have been very good
boys and girls, as Santa made two more surprise visits
to the Club on the 18 and 24 December last year. All
who spotted him on that day were merrily
gifted with sweets and treats, and even
took a photo-opportunity with him!

Surprise Visit by God of Fortune
Members and guests were treated to a pleasant surprise on 29 January as the
God of Fortune made his way to JCC. Those who spotted him were happily
blessed with hong baos and wishes of good luck, abundance and prosperity
for the Dragon Year.

Rousing Fun Day for the Staff
On 20 February, 133 JCC staff had a rousing time playing and having
fun instead of working. It was after all the annual Staff Day, the one
and only day the Club was closed to allow staff their day of fun and
recreation. The curtain raiser for this year’s staff day was the treasure
hunt held at the Universal Studios Singapore (USS). The eventual
winners were the golf course project management team.
A short burst of shower at mid-day certainly cooled down the
revelry a little but could not dampen the high spirits of staff on
their big day. It was definitely an exhilarating day of towering
roller-coaster rides and thrilling fun. The outing at USS ended at
5 pm after which they took the mother-of-all rides straight to their
dinner venue at Yunnan Garden Restaurant.
Staff were treated to a sumptuous Chinese and halal dinner. Six
members of the General Committee were present during dinner.
President, Dr. Tan Cheng Bock, presented long service awards to
8 of our staff who had completed 10, 15 and 35 years of service.
The 35 years long service awards were presented to Ng Yuk Fong
(Golf Operations) and Too Chon Hai (Housekeeping). The other
awards went to 15-year service staff Jeslin Soh (Finance), Wong
Seng Chow (M&E), Ramzah Mohd Noor (Golf Operations) and
Hamzah Muhammed (Golf Operations) while 10-year awards were
handed to Chan Min Sheng (Jackpot) and Ishak Nik (Course).
The Staff Day Committee led by Mohamad Taha then took the party
through a series of fun contests and games with prizes galore. The
night culminated with more than 60 lucky draw prizes given away
with the top prize of a 40” LED TV going to May Kong from F&B.
Surely everyone had a jolly good time.

Reminder for Annual
General Meeting
The Club will be holding its 9th Annual General Meeting (AGM)
on 30 March 2012, Friday, at 7.30pm. Registration starts at
6pm and we would like to encourage all members to attend this
AGM, which would include an election of General Committee (GC)
members. The Annual Report 2011/12 and AGM documents will
be sent to all members.

Update On New Electronic Parking
System (EPS)
Good news! To enhance the security of the Club and prevent abuse
of the car park by outsiders, the Club will be introducing a new
Electronic Parking System (EPS). This system is scheduled to be
effective from 1 April.
With the new EPS, parking charges will now apply to guest and
visitor cars. Members are entitled to free parking for a maximum
of two (2) registered cars.
All members will receive a letter explaining the EPS system, with
a registration form for you to register up to two (2) cars for free.
Forms have to be returned to the Club by 15 March to enable
system integration by 1 April. This would also be a good time
for you to update any change in your personal particulars (email
address, residential or mobile numbers etc). So look out for the
form in your mail box, and call us at 6568 5154/7 or email
membership@jcc.org.sg if you have not received it by 7 March.

New Set of Birthday
Vouchers For Year 2012
From 1 February onwards, members are reminded
to use the Club’s new set of birthday vouchers (see e
picture). The vouchers will be sent to you in your
birthday month, and you need to present the vouchers
together with your Membership Card and NRIC at the
respective outlets to enjoy the special deals. Do call l our

updated your date of birth.
Credit Limit for Non-Term Golfing and Social
Members
With effect from 1 March 2012, a new credit limit of $10,000 and $2,000 will be imposed on
non-term Golfing and Social members respectively. The credit limit for Term Golfing and Term
Social members remain unchanged at $5,000 and $2,000 respectively.
Reminder to Utilise Your Minimum Spending Levy
Gentle reminder to all members. Each quarter, a Minimum Spending criteria of $80.25 (including
GST) is applied and should you not be able to meet the Minimum Spending, the same amount
(or balance of it) will be levied to your account.
Avoid this by coming on down to the Club to enjoy any of our social, recreational or dining
facilities. Note that only cash and charges to the members’ account qualify for the Minimum
Spending. Credit card transactions are not considered, as there is a merchant fee for every
approved credit transaction. Please note the exclusion list below for expenses that do not qualify
for the Minimum Spending.
On top of that, you get to clock Reward Points for each dollar spent at our F&B outlets and Golf
or S&R facilities, and these can be redeemed for vouchers to offset your next expense at the
Club.

THE ISSUE OF “DANGEROUS PLAY”
(And How To Avoid Disciplinary Proceedings On Such Matters)
Quite often one of the common issues that the Golf department and
Disciplinary Committee had to deal with is this issue of “dangerous
play”. Now what is dangerous play
If one examines this issue in depth, it deals with safety,
consideration for others and the spirit of the game.
In this sport, golfers do strike a wayward shot and this includes
high level professional players as well. Are they playing dangerously
in such a case
In essence, if we examine Section I of the Rules that deal with
etiquette; behaviour on the course, and faithfully adopt “the spirit
of the game”, I am confident that you will not be accused of
dangerous play and you will not be guilty of dangerous play.
The spirit of the game emphasizes that players should conduct
themselves in a disciplined manner; demonstrating courtesy and
sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they
may be. On safety, it reiterates the common sense of not striking
a ball until the players in front are out of range. It also states that
a player should ensure that no one is standing close by or in a
position to be hit by a club, the ball or any stones , pebbles or
twigs or the like when they make a stroke or practice swing. If a
player plays a ball in the direction where there is danger of hitting
someone, he should immediately shout a warning. The traditional
word of warning is “fore” but here in Singapore “ball” or other such
warning words are acceptable.
Why then do we often hear of this term “dangerous play” One
common answer is that the player has no consideration for other
players and is impatient. Sometimes, it is a matter of attitude
and some players portray the impression that they do not take the
matter seriously and thus a lack of sincerity in their apology to
another group when they strike a wayward shot that could have
caused physical harm. There are of course other reasons such as
the design of the hole, blind spots and the like, but more often
than not, golfers who exercise patience and consideration for other
players do not contribute to dangerous play.
Accidents do occur in this sport but there is a fundamental
difference between an accident and a deliberate act that is well
within the control of players. Thus, take time to read the section
on golf etiquette contained in Section I of the Rules of Golf and in
particular have a good understanding of the meaning of the “spirit
of the game”, safety and consideration for other players. I am sure
that if all players on the golf course adopt the etiquette on the rules
of golf, it will go a long way in making golf a pleasant and enjoyable
game for everyone on the course.

New Practice Putting Green
Please be informed that with effect from 23 February 2012, the
new practice putting green at the Executive Course would be open
for putting only, while the current small practice green at the
driving range would be closed for repairs until further notice. The
first tee of the Executive Course will also be moved to the 150m
distance to make the first hole a Par 3.
Free Roaming on The First Nine
Good News! Free roaming of buggies during weekends and public
holidays has already started since 11 February. For your safety
however, please note that for Holes 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8, buggies are
not permitted to enter the fairways due to the steep terrain. Please
do not brake suddenly on the grass surface as this may injure the
turf. Happy Golfing!

Reciprocal Arrangement with
Sembawang Country Club
Sembawang Country Club has just re-opened its new frontnine
since 8 January, and JCC members are welcome to play
at their new course as part of our reciprocal arrangement. This
is limited to one flight on Wednesday morning and one flight
on Thursday morning. Please note their buggy fees have now
been increased to $24 ($25.68 inclusive of GST) and that
their second-nine is still under construction.
Good job! Thank you for helping to maintain the course. It’s good to
always have your sand bottle with you!

Proper Placement of Sand Bottles
Our maintenance contractor has brought to our attention that golfers are hanging sand bottles on the knob of the
ball washers. This has caused them problems in maintenance because scratch marks are created and they have
expressed concerns that the knobs of the ball washers may break or be damaged.
There are adequate holders on our buggies for sand bottles.
Please do not hang sand bottles on the knobs of the ball washers as it can cause damage to club property and
increase our maintenance cost. We seek your cooperation on this matter.

Inter-Club Golf Friendly with
Keppel Club, Seletar Country Club
and Warren Country Club
To bolster the close ties between clubs, the Captains of Jurong,
Keppel, Seletar and Sembawang country clubs came up with the
idea of an annual inter-club friendly hosted at each club in turns.
This being Captain Bobby Wee’s final term, he requested the
privilege of holding the first game in JCC. The event was therefore
held at our new first-nine on Sunday 19 February.
A total of 16 members from each club participated in the event,
organised as a four-player scramble with each team consisting of
one player from each club. The team handicap was then computed
based on the average of 50% their combined handicap.
The highlight of the day came
when our JCC President, Dr Tan
Cheng Bock, scored his hole-inone
with a 6-iron on the Par 3,
12th hole.
To extend our hospitality,
all players were treated to a
sumptuous dinner complete
with band performance. Some
of our friends even took to the
stage to belt out their favourite
songs. We look forward to the
next annual game!

A total of 36 players joined us for the friendly tennis challenge
against Yokohama Gardens Tennis Club (YGTC) held on 26
November last year. Though we had to fight off the
