FOREWORD<br />

Someone asked me recently what is the value of our club membership. While I<br />

rattled off the figure, something else was on my mind. What is the real value of a<br />

club membership?<br />

Where lies the value? Is it in old decrepit buildings<br />

that scream memories, legacies and heritage,<br />

spanking new facades that assert hopes, expectations<br />

and desires… or is it in the heart of its members?<br />

I prefer to think it’s the latter that builds a club,<br />

because while we can buy hardware, it is the “heartware”<br />

that defines a club. Members make and mark<br />

a club. Dollars make sense to operate, manage and<br />

sustain, but nothing rules like the heart.<br />

And it is the heart of <strong>Jurong</strong> members that have made<br />

so many of our past fund-raising events a success.<br />

Time and again, members and friends of <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

<strong>Country</strong> <strong>Club</strong> have turned out in droves to raise<br />

funds and help disadvantaged families in Singapore,<br />

especially those around the <strong>Jurong</strong> area. When the<br />

2004 Tsunami hit our neighbour, <strong>Jurong</strong>’s heart-ware<br />

was once again tapped to rebuild many destroyed<br />

lives. This year’s recently concluded YHI <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

Open Charity Golf was no different. I am heartened by the response shown by<br />

members and friends, and would like to take this moment to personally thank<br />

everyone who has contributed to the success of the Open.<br />

Definitely, the value of a <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Country</strong> <strong>Club</strong> membership lies in our heart-ware<br />

– our heart for our friends and compassion for our neighbours, coupled with an<br />

unmistakable passion for life!<br />

A passion that has kept the walls of the <strong>Club</strong> ringing even as they need repeated<br />

coats of paint to keep them spanking new. Despite our maturing Golfers’<br />

Terrace looking far from the polished expensive cafes of some newer clubs,<br />

members and guests favour its casual intimacy. Diehard fans of the Sunset<br />

Terrace enjoy its laid-back serenity, especially in the muted evening hours. And<br />

though continually plagued by various maintenance problems that require real<br />

attention, our golf course continues to enjoy almost full capacities, and we<br />

continue to draw more. If the success of the recent Korean Night is anything to<br />

go by, our club is positively “happening”!<br />

So as we enter the final quarter of this year and prepare for new waves of change<br />

in 2010, I hope one thing will not change in <strong>Jurong</strong>. That is the heart of our<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> members. May it always burn with passion for golf, compassion for our<br />

friends and light the halls of the club with the ferocity of a tigress defending her<br />

den.<br />

To this end, I bid you all join me as we celebrate the renewal of family ties with<br />

our annual Lantern Festival on 27 <strong>Sep</strong>tember. Then on 16 and 17 <strong>Oct</strong>ober, let<br />

us celebrate our friendships with hearty German fare and bountiful steins in an<br />

extended 2-day long Oktoberfest!<br />

FOREWORD<br />

Dear members<br />

As I have mentioned during our Dialogue Session on 17 July, we are making<br />

plans for a major course upgrade sometime in 2010. For information, our last<br />

golf course re-construction took place 17 years ago and it is in need of a major<br />

upgrade. For the record, local golf clubs upgrade their courses between 6 and<br />

13 years after construction or renovation.<br />

The problems we have to face on a constant basis in an aging course such as<br />

ours are numerous and costly. We have serious drainage problems on both<br />

nines, turf is severely contaminated with weeds especially nutgrass, excessive<br />

organic matter build-up, mutation of turf on the greens resulting in inconsistent<br />

putting speed, tight golfing corridor on the front nine which restricts sunlight<br />

and airflow, an obsolete irrigation system and shrinking greens. Maintaining<br />

an aging course has become very expensive and if we are to remain status quo<br />

we will have to spend an additional $1million a year just on patchwork repairs<br />

with no significant improvements to the course on the whole.<br />

With the course upgrade targeted for next year, a Golf Course Upgrading<br />

Committee has been formed and we are in the final process of selecting a golf<br />

course architect to prepare a conceptual design for a walking as well as buggies<br />

on course with minimum changes to the existing layout but with bigger greens,<br />

improved drainage and irrigation system. With new turfs species both on<br />

fairways and greens, we should see our course reclaiming its past glory as one<br />

of the best courses in Singapore.<br />

By now, members would have known that the <strong>Club</strong> has awarded a 3-year<br />

contract with effect from July to Pan West Private Limited to operate the Proshops<br />

and driving range based on the highest tender price. Members would<br />

now have a wider choice and be able to enjoy a wider range of golf products<br />

right at our own doorstep.<br />

Since the beginning of <strong>2009</strong>, the <strong>Club</strong> has signed seven more fully reciprocal<br />

agreements with Haderslev Golfklub in Denmark, The Links Kennedy Bay<br />

in Western Australia; three clubs in West Malaysia namely Kota Permai Golf<br />

and <strong>Country</strong> <strong>Club</strong> Selangor, Kajang Hills Golf <strong>Club</strong> Selangor and Staffield<br />

<strong>Country</strong> <strong>Club</strong> Negeri Sembilan; Kelab Golf Sarawak in East Malaysia and<br />

Tokyo American <strong>Club</strong>, a social club in Japan. We are still actively looking into<br />

expanding our list of reciprocities.<br />

I am also proud to announce that our 33rd <strong>Jurong</strong> Open Charity Golf held from<br />

28 to 30 <strong>Sep</strong>t was concluded with resounding success! For the first time, we<br />

managed to raise over $200,000 in aid of Charity. This achievement is all the<br />

more momentous considering the recovering economy. We now have more<br />

funds to disburse to our adopted charities, and this is without doubt due to the<br />

concerted effort and commitment of ALL involved in this event – from the staff/<br />

management to members, friends and sponsors. THANK YOU for the team spirit<br />

and camaraderie!<br />

IMPROVEMENTS<br />

Road Widening Works Along <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

Town Hall<br />

In line with the Government’s plan to transform <strong>Jurong</strong> into <strong>Jurong</strong> Lake District,<br />

the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has already commenced road-widening<br />

works along congested roads surrounding and leading to the <strong>Club</strong>, starting with<br />

current closures at <strong>Jurong</strong> East St. 12. More closures and re-routings can be<br />

expected as the LTA carries out its road works in phases from now till 2011.<br />

Changes can also be expected along <strong>Jurong</strong> Town Hall Road itself as LTA adds<br />

an extra lane each to both directions of the stretch of road from <strong>Jurong</strong> East<br />

Central to AYE.<br />

Though these works have minimal impact upon the <strong>Club</strong> itself, except for slight<br />

adjustments to the Blue Tee of Hole 4, we would like to caution members to be<br />

more careful as they drive to the <strong>Club</strong>.<br />

Repair Of Netting Following Storm<br />

High mast nettings damaged during stormy winds were repaired and reinforced<br />

with stronger footings to weigh them down for safety purposes and ensure<br />

longer lasting durability.<br />

Hollow Tining<br />

& Sand Top<br />

Dressing<br />

The <strong>Club</strong> will be carrying out hollow<br />

tining and sand top dressing on the<br />

greens from Monday 31 August to<br />

Friday 4 <strong>Sep</strong>tember. There will be<br />

no night golf during this period, and<br />

golfers will have to play on temporary<br />

alternate greens.<br />

Roll Call<br />

We welcome the following new staff to the JCC family. We are certain the<br />

additions will enhance our services to members as we strive to be the premier<br />

Three “Heads” Are Better Than One<br />

With this belief, the <strong>Club</strong> adds three new dynamos to the Management Team, K.<br />

Sangkuni P. Kunjan, Tan Chow Jin and Selena Lim. Sangkuni, or better known as<br />

SK, joins the <strong>Jurong</strong> team as Head of Golf while Chow Jin helms both the Sports &<br />

Recreation and F&B departments as the new Head of Lifestyle. Selena adds punch<br />

to the dynamic duo as the <strong>Club</strong>’s new Sales & Marketing Manager.<br />

A 16-year industry veteran, SK has extensive experience working in major<br />

countries within Asia. Well equipped with the knowledge of golf operations,<br />

course maintenance, turf management as well as course maintenance machineries,<br />

the <strong>Club</strong> is looking forward to tap on his expertise for our impending course<br />

upgrading project. As an accomplished golf professional with accredited teaching<br />

qualifications, his inputs on training modules for junior golf development have<br />

proven to be highly effective for Asians. Most recently, SK oversaw 2 major<br />

Amateur events in Indonesia, which today are recorded as the Largest Amateur Golf<br />

Championship in Indonesia. Amongst other achievements, SK was instrumental in<br />

turning around a bleeding <strong>Club</strong> to a profitable one.<br />

New Head of Lifestyle, CJ<br />

Chow Jin, who prefers going by the name CJ, is another industry veteran who brings<br />

with him more than a decade of experience in both F&B and business development.<br />

CJ garnered his extensive experience through stints with notable and renowned<br />

F&B chains both locally and regionally. Holding a Bachelor of Science in Business<br />

Administration majoring in Travel Industry Management and a Diploma in Hotel<br />

& Catering Management, CJ’s major achievements included the development and<br />

implementation of F&B Marketing Plans, F&B Standard Operating Procedures and<br />

Master Training Programmes. With exposure in the pre-opening and opening phases<br />

of new outlets for independent F&B chains, CJ will bring novel ideas to our table if we<br />

re-furbish our F&B outlets and kitchen. In addition to CJ’s F&B operational experience,<br />

the <strong>Club</strong> is also looking forward to tap on his business development skills to raise our<br />

F&B and S&R throughputs.<br />

Fresh from a 5-year stint in Shanghai, Selena returns to Singapore with priceless<br />

experience in marketing and promoting the local Shanghai golf club that she was<br />

working in to expatriates. On top of that, her portfolio included increasing the<br />

number of reciprocal clubs, selling the club’s products and services to the expatriate<br />

community for Greater China & Shanghai, sourcing sponsors for major events as<br />

well as organizing major golf competitions and social events for the club. Selena<br />

also has extensive experience in sales and marketing from the tourism and F&B<br />

industries.<br />

With these new additions, the existing Management team has also been<br />

restructured to better position the <strong>Club</strong> to meet the challenges in our competitive<br />

Golf Course Upgrading Committee<br />

In view of the club’s major golf<br />

course redevelopment plan, the <strong>Club</strong><br />

recently formed the Golf Course<br />

Upgrading Committee (GCUC) to<br />

oversee the project’s development<br />

and progress. Formed in April<br />

this year, the GCUC is helmed by<br />

Captain Bobby Wee with Vice-<br />

Captain Joe Pereira, with members<br />

Naranjan Singh, Tony Yue, Ting Sa<br />

Tee and Jeffrey Yu. Each comes with<br />

their expertise to complement the<br />

project, in various fields such as soil<br />

investigation and engineering.<br />

Historical Facts<br />

The idea to upgrade the course was<br />

first mooted in 2006 when it was<br />

recognised that, since its initial<br />

modeling works 17 years ago, the<br />

<strong>Club</strong> has not embarked on any major<br />

upgrading of the course to improve<br />

and increase its value.<br />

Current Progress<br />

The current golf committee is continuing preparatory<br />

work that began two years ago. Tenders have been called<br />

to invite golf course architects to draw up a master plan,<br />

engage quantity surveyors and invite irrigation consultants<br />

– all expected to be completed by the end of <strong>Oct</strong>ober.<br />

Plans will be prepared for members’ approval at the next<br />

AGM in March.<br />

Detailed Studies<br />

Comparative studies were done between the JCC course<br />

and other notable courses in Singapore. Some of the more<br />

popular courses reported a trend of remodeling their<br />

course every three to ten years, with continuous upgrades<br />

being carried out even when the course was remodeled<br />

just a year ago. In contrast, our course has not been<br />

upgraded for 17 years.<br />

Current Problems<br />

The golf course has been facing various problems, such as:<br />

• most of the sub-soil drainage pipes are choked and not<br />

in proper working condition<br />

• insufficient sand capping on the fairways and rough<br />

• contamination of nutgrass (weeds) on about 85% of<br />

the tee boxes and fairways<br />

• organic build up of at least 150mm in most areas<br />

On top of the above problems, the back nine suffers<br />

additionally due to it being completely backfilled from<br />

swampland. The 6m of peaty soil is followed by soft clay<br />

underneath, and as many knows, the back-nine suffers<br />

from a high water table. These affect the course’s drainage<br />

system and members’ quality of play.<br />

Future Aims<br />

The GCUC aims to address the above problems with the<br />

overall redevelopment of the course, while improving the<br />

course and allowing for a versatile concept for walking,<br />

buggy-play and night golfing. The committee also aims<br />

to increase the putting surface, introduce good open<br />

drainage concepts to improve surface run-off, review the<br />

length of certain holes for safety reasons, re-align tees,<br />

as well as install new smart irrigation systems with wall<br />

to wall coverage. Certain trees will also be transplanted<br />

to increase sunlight and allow airflow to the turf grass, as<br />

well as introduce more appropriate trees for the back nine.<br />

The committee expects that the project will take about a<br />

year per nine-hole and work will most likely start on the<br />

front nine first, once members give their nod of approval at<br />

the coming AGM.<br />

Interim Improvements On<br />

The Course<br />

Rip raps, otherwise known as “rock armour”, were erected around<br />

the ponds of the second nine to prevent erosion. As many know, our<br />

second nine sits on a soft clay ground and erosion inevitably occurs<br />

due to ground movement. The rip raps help to strengthen the pond<br />

edges while adding character and a touch of natural beauty to the<br />

pond.<br />

Market Price of <strong>Club</strong> Membership<br />

The membership price for our Local Transferable Golf Membership saw a slight<br />

decline in August from the previous transacted price of $45,800 in July (depicted<br />

by the blue line). A continued increase was observed in Transferable Social<br />

memberships, which saw the latest transacted price rise to $4,300 in August, up<br />

from the previous transacted prices of $3,900 in May, $3,500 in February, and<br />

then $4,000 in July.<br />

14 July at the Ficus Ballroom. This<br />

regular get-together allows our new<br />

members opportunity to meet and<br />

mingle with the <strong>Club</strong>’s General<br />

Committee members as well as our<br />

fellow members. What do our new<br />

members think of the <strong>Club</strong> and our<br />

efforts to welcome them into the JCC<br />

family?<br />

New Transferable Golfi ng Member<br />

The MCMN is very useful. It feels good that<br />

the committee members take time to come<br />

and meet us new members. It’s a very<br />

worthwhile session, and I get to meet new<br />

members. In fact, I really appreciate the<br />

Management talking about the upcoming<br />

activities, it gives me an orientation on<br />

what’s happening.<br />

Why I joined the <strong>Club</strong>? Well, actually I’ve<br />

played in <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Country</strong> <strong>Club</strong> frequently<br />

with friends who are members, and I was<br />

looking for a golf club, since I already own<br />

a social club. I like the way the course is<br />

managed and marshaled here. There are<br />

no planes going over all the time, and the<br />

management has really shown me some<br />

sincere efforts in the way they manage the<br />

club. It really does seem like the <strong>Club</strong> has<br />

done their homework on the costing and<br />

planning of the golf course redevelopment,<br />

and I hope that members will support it too<br />

to move the plan forward. With the time<br />

left on our lease, it is really worthwhile to<br />

redevelop the course and add more value<br />

to the club.<br />

I think the MCMN is a good gesture by the<br />

committee to welcome us new members<br />

into the JCC family. It’s really a good<br />

opportunity for us to get a chance to talk<br />

to the committee members one-on-one,<br />

which I may not have opportunity to do<br />

otherwise.<br />

I joined the <strong>Club</strong> because it’s convenient,<br />

within the vicinity of my home. I also like<br />

the Golfers’ Terrace and the layout of<br />

the golf course, which allows me to play<br />

both day and night. I hope that there will<br />

be more space to expand and develop<br />

the club further, like maybe adding an<br />

additional course in future (laughs). I know<br />

it sounds diffi cult at the moment, but it’s<br />

just an idea. I find it good that the <strong>Club</strong>’s<br />

constantly trying to improve!<br />

I personally fi nd the MCMN enjoyable.<br />

I joined the <strong>Club</strong> mainly because it has<br />

night golfi ng and it’s near to my work place<br />

and home. It allows me more opportunity<br />

to play golf (laughs). I really like that the<br />

<strong>Club</strong> is very friendly, and that the golf<br />

medals are so well organised. I even get<br />

phone call reminders for my slots – well<br />

done! I am frankly looking forward to the<br />

golf course renovation and a chance to<br />

play a nicer course. In fact, my wife is also<br />

just beginning to learn golf and it’s good<br />

that the <strong>Club</strong> has an executive course,<br />

which allows her to practise on the course,<br />

without any feelings of pressure. It allows<br />

her to play quite easily.<br />

I think the MCM is really helpful in helping<br />

me integrate into <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Country</strong> <strong>Club</strong>.<br />

All the committee members are very<br />

kind and sincerely welcome all the new<br />

members. I feel like I truly belong here.<br />

That’s what made me choose <strong>Jurong</strong> over<br />

other clubs – I am very impressed by how<br />

the committee members treat all the new<br />

members and I want to be a part of it.<br />

On top of that I defi nitely like the location,<br />

its vast size, its great facilities and last<br />

of all its quiet and peaceful atmosphere<br />

that does wonders for me. I love the<br />

restaurants (the Green Banyan) and hope<br />

that the sauna will be available the whole<br />

day for all members, as some members<br />

are missing out on this wonderful treat due<br />

to their busy schedule. I also hope for a<br />

steam-room as this will complement the<br />

sauna and make the <strong>Club</strong>’s facilities more<br />

complete!


CLUB SCENE<br />

Welcomed Transparency<br />

The Eugenia Room was packed to the door on Friday 17 July as almost<br />

one hundred members crowded the hall for the <strong>Club</strong>’s first Kopi-Chat<br />

session. Initiated by the Channels and Communication Committee,<br />

which is headed by the <strong>Club</strong>’s Vice-President K K Lim, the Kopi-Chat<br />

is aimed at increasing the levels of transparency in club governance<br />

while at the same time improving two-way communication between<br />

members and the policy makers of the <strong>Club</strong>.<br />

The informal dialogue session started promptly at 7pm even as<br />

members continued to stroll in and pull up chairs with dinner in<br />

hand. <strong>Club</strong> President Dr Tan Cheng Bock started the ball rolling<br />

with an overview of the <strong>Club</strong>’s current position before handing<br />

the mike over to Captain Bobby Wee, who took the floor through plans for a<br />

major redevelopment of the golf course. Members were given a comprehensive<br />

presentation into the trending patterns of various golf course upgrades by<br />

other clubs, as well as problems faced by our current aging golf course, which<br />

was last upgraded 17 years ago. By the end of the insightful session, the floor<br />

unanimously welcomed the proposed change, even after being informed of<br />

the estimated fees that may have to be levied upon members in order to ensure<br />

the plans pull through. Dr Tan took to the floor once again before ending the<br />

night’s session to share the progress of the hotel development project and<br />

give insight into further plans for a<br />

major redevelopment of the club.<br />

<strong>Club</strong> Champions <strong>2009</strong><br />

For the second year running, Chia<br />

Chong Zheng and May Goh defy<br />

the typical description of golf being<br />

a gentleman’s game. Seventeen-year<br />

old Chong Zheng and petite May once<br />

again scrambled the golf denomination<br />

when they beat other players to defend<br />

their <strong>Club</strong> Championship, each with<br />

a massive nine-strokes difference from<br />

their leading opponents.<br />

We took a few minutes of their time to<br />

find out what drive these focused and<br />

determined players.<br />

BH: Congratulations on being crowned <strong>Club</strong><br />

Champ once again! How does it feel being the<br />

youngest two-time <strong>Club</strong> Champion?<br />

CCZ: Thank you! It defi nitely feels great to win<br />

this title again, and being the youngest player to<br />

win the club championship twice is beyond my<br />

expectation.<br />

BH: Tell us, how was this year’s Competition<br />

different from last year’s?<br />

CCZ: Well, just by looking at the scores this<br />

year, the club championship has taken a<br />

big step to reach another notch higher! The<br />

competition within me as well as my fellow<br />

competitors was immense and this defi nitely<br />

bodes well for the years to come.<br />

BH: Any particular pressure to perform “up to<br />

expectation” and win the crown? How did you<br />

cope with it?<br />

CCZ: I had immense pressure from my friends<br />

and some fellow competitors. They told me:<br />

“This title is yours for sure! No one can take<br />

this away from you! “I humbly took in their<br />

comments. But I tried my best to remain<br />

focused and managed to stick to my game<br />

plan.<br />

BH: So share with us, what was your game<br />

plan?<br />

CCZ: I feel that statistics is a very important<br />

aspect in golf. Statistics meaning the number<br />

of greens and fairways in regulation hit during<br />

a round. Hence, my main game plan was to hit<br />

most of the fairways, which then gave me the<br />

chance to hit the green in regulation for a good<br />

chance for a birdie, or at worst a 3-putt bogey.<br />

This game plan helped me to remain focused<br />

when it comes to the tee shot and that gave me<br />

the advantage over my opponents.<br />

Chia Chong Zheng<br />

I told myself not to be over-confident and<br />

complacent, do not be too satisfi ed, and to<br />

keep pushing to play even better.<br />

BH: You were also a top-favourite to win in<br />

the HSBC Youth Challenge, leading on the<br />

fi rst day, but lost on count-back. Any take on<br />

that?<br />

CCZ: Well, I did my best on the last day, but<br />

Joshua Ho (the winner of that event) played<br />

exceptionally well that day. Although countbacks<br />

aren’t the nicest of ways to determine<br />

the winner, I’ll accept it and take the positives<br />

out of the 2-day event!<br />

BH: After Edwin Pereira, you are the only<br />

16-year old to win the <strong>Club</strong> Championship<br />

twice in a row in almost 30 years. Any advise<br />

to younger golfers who aspire to be in your<br />

spot one day?<br />

CCZ: Ha-ha I didn’t know that! I’m 17 years<br />

and 6 months old already by the way, getting<br />

old! Well, golf<br />

is all about the<br />

BH: Tell us! Did you also think that “Ah! This<br />

one’s mine!” for the <strong>Club</strong> Championship, or that<br />

you’ll score this for sure?<br />

CCZ: Yes, at times this thought fl ashes through<br />

my mind before and during the round. However,<br />

having lost a competition due to complacency<br />

before, I remembered those incidents. Thus,<br />

<strong>Club</strong> Champions <strong>2009</strong> – May Goh<br />

BH: Congratulations on being crowned <strong>Club</strong> Champ once again! How does it feel being the twotime<br />

<strong>Club</strong> Champion?<br />

MG: Elated! I want to thank God for being my pillar of strength, my coach for his support and last<br />

but not least my good friends for their encouragement and love.<br />

BH: What have you been doing to keep yourself in top form for the <strong>Club</strong> Championship?<br />

MG: I focused on my short game this year especially on my chipping and putting. I trained hard<br />

on my irons so that I can have higher percentage of green regulations.<br />

BH: You are a regular on the course. Did you fi nd this year’s Competition different from last<br />

year’s? What’s better and what’s worse?<br />

MG: Yes, last year, we played off the silver tee and unless you are a long hitter, green<br />

regulations is an <strong>issue</strong>. This year we played off the Red tee, which is shorter but a good drive<br />

is needed. The second shot is crucial – it has to be precise and accurate in order to be put on<br />

regulations. For some holes, I used my 3 Wood instead to tee off so that I could place my ball in<br />

play. And the weather for the fi rst two days were exceptionally “hot”, it really drained you when<br />

you need to stay focused on your game. Even then, I thoroughly enjoyed the competition and the<br />

company.<br />

BH: Any particular pressure to perform “up to<br />

expectation” and win the crown? If yes, from<br />

whom and how did you cope with it?<br />

MG: Well, it is natural for one to feel pressured<br />

in any competitions, especially so when you<br />

are defending the title. Bob Rotella’s book “Golf<br />

is a Game of Confi dence”, taught me to stay<br />

patient and accept the imperfect shots and<br />

move on to the next hole. I have learnt to keep<br />

my mental sound and strong through each<br />

round, put aside all the “expectations” and just<br />

enjoy each round as it comes.<br />

BH: You met 8-time winner Irene Tan again in<br />

this year’s Competition… any thoughts?<br />

MG: I have always enjoyed playing golf with<br />

Irene. Besides, it is the course that we are<br />

challenging and not any individual.<br />

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL<br />

May Goh<br />

BH: Although you had a bad day on the 2nd round where you lost to Irene by 5 strokes, you<br />

were still leading by 6 strokes overall. Share your thoughts on how it felt and what kept you<br />

going?<br />

MG: It was a very hot and humid Saturday for the 2nd round… the heat was utterly unbearable<br />

and I could feel the sun “burning” my skin!!! It was diffi cult to stay focused throughout the game.<br />

My tempo was very fast and I couldn’t sink in putts… I tried to stay calm and patient at the green,<br />

and kept drinking water to avoid dehydration.<br />

BH: On the fi nal day, you returned in top form and left Irene behind by a total of 9 strokes<br />

overall… any refl ections?<br />

MG: I woke up in the morning feeling very relaxed and fi lled with confi dence, and I put day two<br />

behind me. I thank God that the weather was very nice on Sunday… especially after the rain. I<br />

stayed focus and smiled even when I had a bad shot and I was able to sink in more putts and<br />

thus keep my score low.<br />

BH: So how do you stay relaxed?<br />

MG: (laughs) By singing! It is one of the formulas I often use whenever I feel unsettled to calm<br />

myself down! I have learnt over time to take one shot at a time and count your strokes only<br />

after you fi nish your game. In addition, you must trust your swing and keep your swing thoughts<br />

simple. Follow your game plan. The key factor to playing good golf is CONFIDENCE!<br />

Golden Boys and Girls<br />

At the recent “Fun in the Sun” Swim Meet hosted at The Pines on Sunday<br />

31 May, a group of our junior swimmers flew the club flag high when<br />

they returned with 18 Gold medals for <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Country</strong> <strong>Club</strong>.<br />

This is only the second year running that our <strong>Jurong</strong> swimmers entered the<br />

Meet and we are honoured that our boys and girls did us proud. Here’s a<br />

little insight into what these little dynamos thought about their win.<br />

what did you think of the team’s chances<br />

BEFORE the event?<br />

I was more concern about the process of<br />

getting the team ready for the swim meet<br />

than winning it. When we won 18 out of<br />

the 22 events, I was pleasantly surprised!<br />

When JCC was crowned the overall<br />

winner, what was your reaction?<br />

My first reaction was surprise, but the<br />

kids had really done the club proud! It<br />

was also their hard work from all the<br />

hours of training.<br />

What did you think worked for this<br />

year’s competition that was missing from<br />

last year’s?<br />

We were better prepared and the kids<br />

were mentally ready compared to last<br />

year. They believed they would do better<br />

Help prevent slow play by practicing the tips below:<br />

<strong>Club</strong> Championship Special<br />

Chong Zheng Retains Title<br />

Chia Chong Zheng retained the <strong>Club</strong> Championship, outscoring his rivals over<br />

four days of competition. Chong Zheng was again the runaway winner by a<br />

massive nine strokes, the same margin he scored over the runner-up last year.<br />

His four-round aggregate score of gross 293 was also very much improved from<br />

his winning score of 305 last year.<br />

Jesse Elliot Yap, who finished third last year, put up a fine display over four<br />

rounds that earned him the second spot. His aggregate total of 302 was eleven<br />

strokes better than Leon See in third place. Leon’s four-day total gross 313, was<br />

seven strokes better than the next in line.<br />

May Reigns Queen Again<br />

Reigning ladies’ champion May Goh proved again that she is the one to beat<br />

when she overcame the challenge of 8 top lady golfers <strong>Jurong</strong> currently had<br />

to offer. It was May’s first day’s score of gross 80 that shot her into the lead<br />

which she held on till the end of the championship. Her winning gross of<br />

253 was nine strokes better than 8-time champion Irene Tan, who had to play<br />

bridesmaid for the third year running.<br />

In the scramble for the runner-up spot, Irene scored a three-day aggregate of<br />

262, which was just enough to nudge Mill Lim off by a single stroke.<br />

Matchplay Championship<br />

Chong Zheng Scores A Double<br />

Chia Chong Zheng won both the <strong>Club</strong> Championship and the Matchplay<br />

Championship title last year, a double win for the very first time. This year, the 17<br />

year old had already secured the <strong>Club</strong> Championship in June and, in the Matchplay<br />

Championship for Men held on 18, 19, 25 and 26 July, as the top qualifier, he proved<br />

once again that he was simply the best by<br />

beating the rest to complete his second double<br />

in as many years.<br />

In the knockout rounds, he beat Joe Pereira<br />

by going seven up with five holes to play in<br />

the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, he overcame<br />

Stanley Ang by four and three. It was in the final<br />

that he proved his mettle. After being two holes<br />

down with eight holes to go in the match against<br />

2006 winner Leon See, Chong Zheng took the<br />

next five holes to go two holes clear which he<br />

held on to win on the 17th green.<br />

Leon, who was the second best qualifier, had<br />

reached the final by beating Jimmy Goh in the<br />

quarterfinal by three and one, and sent Gene Kwek packing by winning one up in the<br />

semi-final.<br />

Matchplay Championship<br />

May Hits Three In A Row<br />

Two-time Champion May Goh was back to complete a hat trick of consecutive<br />

wins in an event she had completely dominated since 2007. As soon as the<br />

draw for the knockout stage of the competition was finalised, it looked quite<br />

unlikely that new names would be inscribed onto the Ladies’ Matchplay<br />

Championship Trophy.<br />

At this year’s Matchplay Championship for Ladies held on 18, 19, 25 and 26<br />

July, May was the second best qualifier with eventual runner-up Jang Sang Yi<br />

heading the list of qualifiers. In fact with both players reaching the final, it was<br />

a repeat of the 2007 final in which May had triumphed by six and five.<br />

The final was a closer affair with Sang Yi not giving an inch, taking May right<br />

through the full 18 holes and the game into extra holes. It was, however, on the<br />

first extra hole that the tie was broken when May managed a par with Sang Yi<br />

struggling for a bogey.<br />

Come Out Tops<br />

Richard Ling (24) played some scintillating golf and came out<br />

on top of the Men’s division during the Captains’ Day golf event<br />

held on 11 July. In fact, it was a runaway win for Richard, who<br />

amassed 49 stableford points, as four of his closest challengers<br />

managed only 37 points.<br />

Of the foursome, Teru Kawai (10) had the best score based on<br />

a countback and deservedly took second place while<br />

Tan Swee Teck (24) edged out Vincent Tan (14) for<br />

third place. Vincent’s score was good enough for<br />

fourth place while Naranjan Singh took home the<br />

fifth prize.<br />

Scores in the ladies’ division were fairly close. Etty<br />

Ruswita Ochiai (16) returned with 40 stableford<br />

points for her victory. Junior golfer Gwendolyn Wee<br />

(27) won the second prize, a point behind while<br />

another junior Rebecca De Foe (34) took third spot<br />

on countback from Soodendra (36) when both<br />

returned with 36 points.<br />

Hat Trick For Swee Teck<br />

Lim Swee Teck put up a consistent performance over four<br />

days of competition to win the Crocodile Cup which was<br />

held on 6, 14, 20 and 21 July. He returned with a total<br />

gross 362 to finish three strokes ahead of Patrick Lam.<br />

Swee Teck, who was runner-up in this event last year,<br />

regained the title he won in 2007, making it a hat trick<br />

of wins. His first Crocodile Cup win was in 1995.<br />

Forty-four partnerships were involved in the battle to win the Four Ball Better<br />

Ball Competition held on 27 June. The best three teams carded identical nett<br />

63s. The team comprising Daiki Ikeda (19) and Darrin Tan (22) eventually<br />

triumphed on countback, pushing Ong Han Cheong (17) and Loh Ju Fern<br />

(14) into second place, with Etty Ruswita Ochiai (14) and Linda Tong<br />

Staff / GA Wins Another Match<br />

Staff and GAs scored another convincing win over members in this annual challenge,<br />

which was postponed from March this year. Held on Tuesday 21 July, the top 10<br />

scorers from each team contributing to the team score based on double Peoria<br />

Stableford points scoring format, the staff and golfer’s assistants tally of 358 points<br />

was 21 points more than the members’ team score of 337 points.<br />

The top individual prize in the members’ division went to May Goh who<br />

scored 36 points winning on a count back from Naranjan Singh. Susan Mah<br />

took third spot on a count back with 34 points.<br />

In the Staff and GA division, General Manager Peter Goh took the top prize<br />

with his 38 points. GAs took the second to fourth prizes with Abdul Sani and<br />

Amirul, both on 37 points, and Faizal on 36 points respectively on the winners’ list.<br />

From Laps To Loops<br />

The weekend of 24 to 27 June witnessed a mass assortment of 24 swimmers<br />

aged between 8 and 16 lugging all types of sleeping bags and other personal<br />

artillery as they prepared for a 3D4N Swim Camp at none other than JCC’s<br />

Eugenia Room.<br />

Scoff not at the idea! The Eugenia Room was only a doorway to fun and exciting<br />

places. From the parquet-lined Eugenia, the campers were ported to Tampines<br />

SAFRA for exciting archery, bowling and more. So our water babes had the<br />

opportunity to learn more about other sports, as well as glean (otherwise<br />

unavailable) swimming tips and more from Coach Leonard.<br />

JCC Novice Swim Meet<br />

The <strong>Club</strong> would like to thank all participants and parents<br />

for making the annual JCC Novice Swim Meet held on<br />

Saturday 25 July another success. Congratulations to the<br />

winners and to those who did not win medals this round,<br />

try again for next year!<br />

Squash Friendly With Warren<br />

Our senior squash team<br />

visited the Warren Golf And<br />

<strong>Country</strong> <strong>Club</strong> in August for<br />

a round of friendly matches.<br />

Both sides put up eight<br />

players each to compete in<br />

this competition. Though<br />

we were playing away, our<br />

players fought hard as they<br />

ran, puffed and tumbled<br />

their way through these<br />

gruelling matches against<br />

our very tough host. Both<br />

sides fought to a 4-4 draw,<br />

with Warren complimenting<br />

JCC’S oldest player, 69-year<br />

old Chow Hoi Sung for his<br />

sportsmanship.<br />

The long and hard fought<br />

matches were well appreciated by all the players as it provided excellent<br />

workout for all the participants during the hot afternoon. Our host later treated<br />

players to a sumptuous buffet and hopes were exchanged that when we invite<br />

Warren to JCC for a return match, we will field a stronger team.<br />

Absolutely Korean!<br />

Glorious Korean food and heart-pumping entertainment ruled the Golfers’<br />

Terrace on Saturday, 25 July as it was transformed to fit the night’s Korean theme.<br />

From as early as 5pm, luscious smells of Korean delicacies wafted in from the<br />

Terrace tempting guests to satisfy their rumbling tummies as soon as possible.<br />

This of course could not drown out the heart-thumping beat of Korean drums<br />

as one and all geared to welcome the Ambassador of Korea to Singapore, His<br />

Excellency Kim Joong-Keun. Rousing entertainment kicked off with song and<br />

dance performances to top Korean hits. It did not matter that we could not fly<br />

in the Wondergirls – one of our own girl groups from a Singapore-based dance<br />

academy roused the crowd just as wonderfully. A “Samulnori” dance troupe was<br />

even specially flown in to invoke blessings and good luck for the audience and<br />

guests were treated to a wonderful surprise when Mediacorp<br />

celebrity Mrs Jing Ying Ji stepped on to the stage in a colourful<br />

traditional Hanbok! Mrs Jing, who has made Singapore her<br />

home for the last 30 years, gave an absolutely delightful Korean<br />

drum performance, and even shared anecdotes on how she<br />

adjusted to life in Singapore in the early days and met and fell<br />

in love with her husband.<br />
