FOREWORD
We are looking ahead to exciting times!
In February, we received your overwhelming mandate to proceed with the golf
course upgrading project. Then in March, new blood was injected into the
General Committee. In April, we sealed the deal with our golf course contractor
for the course upgrade. And this May we are all gearing for Phase 1 of the
upgrading project. In nine months’ time, we will see the birth of a new 9-hole
at the Jurong course.
In the midst of these, the government announced the kick-off for the makeover
of sleepy Jurong into the up-and-coming Jurong Lake District, slated as the
biggest commercial hub outside the city centre and a world-class leisure
destination for locals and tourists. Road widening works have started, MRT
lines are being extended and development tenders are already being called.
Change is coming fast and it will come like a tidal wave. We need to gear the
club up for a new era and new challenges.
These coming two years will be a crucial period for the Club. The injection of
new blood into the General Committee, tempered with the experience and
wisdom of veterans such as Dr Tan Cheng Bock, Bobby Wee, Simon Tan and
Cheong Tuck Meng will certainly help as we forge new paths for the Club.
What we need is to construct a road map, a long-term developmental plan that
will thrust Jurong Country Club as one of the top premier clubs in Singapore.
There is so much for us to do – upgrading the course is only the tip of the
iceberg. Next in line will be our clubhouse, facilities, services; value-adding
our membership, expanding our amenities, fine-tuning ourselves to be more
relevant to the new market… the list just goes on.
Immediately however, our focus is to upgrade our service quality and inject
more life into our social and F&B. We want to bring in more members and
friends to the Club. We want a vibrant club scene. And we want you to help us
in this journey. Do visit the club and tell us how you want us to improve it, so
that you want to enjoy it everyday. Tell your friends what’s good about the club
so they too will want to be part of the Jurong family. Tell us what’s bad so we
can square in and better it. Yes, there will be frustrations, some members may
say nothing moves in this club, but at times we have to step back, take a macro
view of things and see the bigger picture.
I was glad that I went for a world-class gathering of club managers from all
over the world recently. The 83rd CMAA Conference in San Diego gave me
an opportunity to do just that – take a break from the endless firefighting, see
what and how other clubs around the world are doing, and take back what is
successful for our own little global village. While one manager shared about his
Heroes and Stars programme to reward staff performance, I was glad that we
have our own Star Service Award to appreciate staff who go out of their way to
make someone’s day. We will also be planning new activities and new unique
propositions for the Club. We will share these with members at more dialogue
sessions and I hope that when the time comes, members will extend their help
and expertise to support our projects. This is, after all, your club and only you
can make it better!

FOREWORD
Firstly, my thanks go to my fellow members for returning me unopposed as
Captain for another two years. I appreciate your vote of confidence and assure
you I will continue to give my best for the Club.
As you probably know by now, we received a 90% mandate at the recent EGM
held in February to carry out the golf course upgrading project. Since then, work
has swung in full force not only to award the contract but more importantly,
synchronize massive amounts of coordination and preparation work to close the
course and ensure the least disruption to members.
I am most happy to report that we have awarded the golf course upgrading
contract to TEHC International Pte Ltd (TEHC). With almost 40 years of
experience in landscaping and golf course construction, TEHC is a specialist
in the field and have won major contracts from the National Parks Board,
Gardens by the Bay, Integrated Resorts at Sentosa, Tanah Merah Country Club,
Sentosa Golf Club, Marina Bay Golf Course and most recently, Seletar Country
Club. TEHC has achieved all accreditations that are essential to the successful
completion in managing and executing large-scale projects and is a member
of the iGolf Corporate Advisory Council, which promotes environmental
sustainability for golf courses. One of its most recent awards include coming in
First Runner-Up at the “Renovation of the Year International Courses Category”
last year for the re-modeling of the 27-hole golf course at National Service
Resort & Country Club.
We sealed the deal with TEHC at a Signing Ceremony signed by Dr Tan Cheng
Bock and GC members on Thursday 15 April just as the clock auspiciously
struck 6.38pm.
Now that contracts are signed, we are all anticipating the works and magic to
start. The project will be divided into two phases – Phase 1 for the first nine and
practice putting green in front of the main clubhouse, and Phase 2 for the back
nine. Phase 1 will commence on Tuesday 1 June 2010, which means the last day
members can play our full current 18 holes is on Sunday 30 May.
Since we will be operating on just 9 holes for the next two years, there will be
adjustments. New timesheets, new scorecards and new slope rating index will
all be available at the Golf Reception and on our online booking portals from
Friday 21 May. Some events have to be cancelled and the annual Jurong Charity
Open will resume only after the full course opens in 2011. Please refer to page 6
and 7 for more information on what you should expect in this period.
While we endeavour to minimise disruption to members, it is inevitable that
there will be some noise and disruption along the way, such as the frequent
movement of heavy vehicles at the main carpark and along the golf course.
Some inconvenience may be experienced at congested areas such as the bag
drop area, carpark and at some turns of the golf course. Through all these, we
seek your kind understanding and urge that you display caution, restraint and
cooperation both on and off the course.
Should you have any concerns to highlight, feel free to approach us in the Club.
You can also drop a visit to our new Golf Manager Matthew Lui. Matthew is a
veteran in this field and I am sure with his expertise, we are set to improve our
golfing experience in Jurong Country Club.

What To Expect In The Interim Period
1. CLOSURE OF FIRST NINE FOR UPGRADING
(a) The first nine of the Jurong Course will be closed
for Phase 1 of the Golf Course Upgrading Project
from Tuesday 1June 2010.
(b) Full 18H play is available up to Sunday 30 May.
(c) The course will still be closed on Monday 31 May
for regular maintenance work on the second 9,
especially in view of the increased traffic in the
coming months.
(d) Subsequently the second 9 will only be closed for
half day (AM) on Mondays.
6. CANCELLATION OF EVENTS
Refer to page 21 for a list of cancelled events in view
of the Golf Course Upgrading project.

2. DURATION OF CLOSURE
Phase 1 of the Golf Course Upgrading Project will take
nine months from June 2010.
3. NEW TIMESHEET AND SCORECARD
(a) In view of the closure of the first 9, the timesheet
will be halved from the current 32 to 16 slots per
AM, PM and Nite session.
(b) A new time sheet and scorecard for 9H play
will be available from Friday 21 May 2010 at the
Golf Reception Counter and through all applicable
online golf booking portals.
4. GREEN FEES AND BOOKING PROCEDURES
(a) There will be no change to the Green Fees
however guests and visitors will be given an
additional $8.00 F&B voucher redeemable at the
Golfers’ Terrace, Green Banyan and Time Out Pub
on the same day during Phase 1 of the Course
Upgrade.
(b) Booking procedures remain unchanged i.e.
bookings can be made online via applicable golf
booking portals or at the golf reception counter.
(c) There will be no revision of rates for other golfing
services e.g. GA and Buggy fees.

5. CLOSURE OF PRACTICE PUTTING GREEN
The Practice Putting Green in front of the main
clubhouse will be closed from 1 August 2010, as
part of Phase 1. Subsequently, the Practice Putting and
Chipping Green at the 10th Tee will be converted
as a full Practice Putting Green. Members can
continue to practice their short game at the Chipping
Green next to the Driving Range. Refer to illustration
for details.

Special Feature
WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT THE NEW HOLE 6?
Our Hole 6 is a very attractive and challenging downhill
Par 3 hole. The extension of the pond across the approach
to the green makes a very difficult forced water carry for
short-hitting men and most lady golfers. The existing green
presents little challenge or opportunity for a variety of pin
positions.
Some features of the new Hole 6:
The green will be relocated approximately 10m left
and 6m back of its present location to increase safety
from stray balls from the second green. This also
allows an increase in length to 195m. The enlarged
and integrated pond will be extended making
for greatly increased challenge for right-hand pin
positions and a fairer situation for the conservative
short-hitting golfer.
The rear two tees will be slightly re-aligned and
the area to the right re-shaped to a series of
hollows. The second (or white) tee is substantially
enlarged.
A new buggy path will connect directly to the parking
bay beside the halfway house. Obsolete sections of the
path near the shelter will be demolished.
Bunkers will remain to guard the rear of the green.
The lake will be edged by a new varying height

New Staff On Board
Manager (Golf)
Matthew Lui joined the Jurong family
on 1 April as our new Manager for Golf.
Though a late starter in the golf fraternity,
the 20-year industry veteran has made
his mark, rising from the ranks of a Golf
Manager to that of a General Manager in
his most recent appointment.
Prior to joining us, Matthew was
credited for raising the market value of
the apartments at PT Guthrie Jaya Indah
Island Resort by threefold. He also managed to reduce bad debts by
half within a span of 6 years. During his tenure as a Director of Golf
Operations in another golf and country club in Indonesia, he played a
pivotal role in collecting US$200,000 of green fees and membership
dues through various marketing and promotional efforts. Having a
knack for raising funds, Matthew managed to garner approximately
$1.25 million for various charitable organizations in Singapore during
his 7-year stint at Raffles Country Club.
Assistant Manager (Operations)
Joining us on 4 March, James Collar
was appointed as the Assistant Manager
(Operations). James brings with him
a wealth of experience in F&B service
delivery and staff training, including
leadership and management of F&B
service operations. James had previously
assumed various management positions
in renowned F&B outlets and was
instrumental in developing the external
catering business for the Dome group and setting up a service
sequence for them in their Malaysian outlets.
Resident Technical Officer (Golf Course Upgrading Project)
Paul Chong joined us on 22 March as a
Resident Technical Officer for our golf
course upgrading project. He has extensive
experience supervising projects for
properties as well as golf courses. Amongst
others, he was the Clerk-of-Works for the
construction of minor and major renovation
work for the Clubhouse and golf courses
of Singapore Island County Club, Garden
Course of Tanah Merah Country Club and
Buggy Shed extension of Sembawang
Country Club. Paul also served as a site coordinator for the golf course
improvement work at Laguna National Golf and Country Club.

Green Light for
Golf Course
Upgrading
We would like to take this opportunity to
thank all members for their overwhelming
support at the Extraordinary General
Meeting on Friday 26 February. Thanks to
your support and attendance, we obtained
a 90% mandate to proceed with the Golf
Course Upgrading Project.
Stalwart members like Lim Hang Kiat, who
was also the club’s first captain back in its early days, also took to the floor to
compliment and encourage the GC in the project. His elaborate explanation
on why the course needs to be upgraded certainly did not go wasted but was
welcomed with applause from the floor. We thank Mr Lim for his unwavering
support! And who will forget Simon Yuen’s
amusing but apt speech of likening the
course upgrade to that of scrapping your
old car to get a new one! Just like Simon –
we too look forward to a new challenging
championsip course to play for the
remaining years!
Overall, members acknowledged the
need for upgrade, though they shared
concerns mainly on finance
and risk management. The GC
assured members that there will
be stringent practices to ensure
the club does not overrun on the
$23m budget and that quality is
met according to specifications
indicated. The committee also
highlighted
plans for
a new
membership
launch to
partially fund
the upgrading
project and
add critical
mass to
the club’s
membership.

CLUB SCENE
New Phases
Just one month after the EGM, more
than 100 members once again turned
up at the Ficus Ballroom. This time for
the Club’s Annual General Meeting.
Hot on the agenda was the election of
members to the General Committee.
Dr Tan started the meeting by first
thanking members for their support at
the EGM in approving the golf course
upgrading project and announced that
the Committee had just awarded the
project to TEHC International Pte Ltd at
a sum lower than the projected amount.
After inviting members to view the architectural
drawings of the club’s proposed development
master plan, Dr Tan took the opportunity to thank
the outgoing GC members for their hard work
and dedication to the club in the past few years.
Treasurer then took over to report on the Club’s
financial performance. Time flew by as members
promptly moved resolutions and other matters to
quickly get to the balloting process.

Market Prices of Club Memberships
The membership price for Local Transferable Golfing Membership (Unsecured
Notes) remained at $46,000 since its last transacted price in December last
year. The membership price for Local Transferable Golfing Membership took
a slight dip in March and April to $42,000, down $2,000 from February.
The membership price for Transferable Social Membership showed a similar
downward trend, dropping from $3,900 in February to $3,600 in March and
April.

Special Course Development Levy

support at the Extraordinary General Meeting held on Friday 26 February to

Mardi Gras
On Saturday 27 February the Club
was decked to the nines in purple,
gold and green as staff and members
alike geared up for the Club’s first
ever Mardi Gras celebration. The Club
pulled out all the stops for this special
event, with goodie bags sponsored by

processions at the carpark and even
dance performances at the car porch
to liven up the party.

The Golfers’ Terrace was transformed
into a hub for great and
authentic Indonesian nesian food and
entertainment on Saturday 20
March. Close to 100 members
turned up with
their
families and
friends for our first-
ever Dangdut Nite. There were
roaming dancers to up the ante,
as well as hot and sexy dangdut
singers and dancers. Lucky
draw and games are part of
any event but at the Dangdut
Nite, our games were like no
other. Dance competitions and
cultural quizzes were what got the
floor into a flurry ry instead and the
fun and excitement was certainly
palpable.
In all, the event was truly enjoyable.

the event and look forward to your

Prize Presentation 2009
The Golf Prize Presentation 2009 for both men and ladies
was held at the Ficus Ballroom on Friday 5 March. The
Golf Committee members played host to the event whose
main menu was not the food but the crystal ware prizes
that members had won in golf events held in 2009. They
were not disappointed as hundreds of these glittering
prizes were presented to the deserving winners.
A golf invitational competition was held in the afternoon
with Ross Tan and Grace Choo triumphing in the men and
ladies divisions respectively.

Let’s Relay!
What is a sport without some
competition? For two months in a row,
we pit our young swimmers in friendly
relays and telematches to sharpen
their competitive edge and hone their
swimming skills.
In February, our young
swimmers were divided into
two teams with Goh Wei Jie
and Azhiim tasked to lead their
teams to the finish line. In March,
we had a battle of the sexes.
Each month, the excitement
was palpable as each member
put in their very best to do their
own teams proud. Wei Jie’s team
emerged victors in February’s challenge with Azhiim’s team coming in not too
far behind. March saw Girl Power ruling as the girls’ team trounced the boys.
We had a small party to congratulate the winners and celebrate birthday boys
and girls of the month.
JCC Comes Out
Champs
This year we fielded two teams to
participate in the annual STA Interclub
Singles League held from 13 March to 18
April. Our team comprised Harold Choi
as Captain for Team 1, with Elton Toh, Tan
Hong Ming, Tan Hong Wei and Yeo Ee Jin.
Team 2 was led by Erik Goh, with Jethro
Wang, Ian Fang, Timonthy Soon, Adriel
Tay, Nicholas Ngiam, Goh Wei Liang, and
Coach Ong Kim Hock as members.
Over six long weeks, our teams competed
in rounds of challenge between clubs and
both teams gave their best with visible
improvement from last year’s performance.
We trounced strong opponents such as
Serangoon Gardens Country Club, Nanyang
Technological University, Keppel Club and
more. We are proud for our JCC Team 1 for
their all-win track record, which brought
them to the finals and ultimately winning
the Championship trophy! Well Done JCC

• One (1) JCC point shall be issued for every $1 spent (where applicable and
