GOLF NEWS Golf Course Upgrading Committee In view of the club’s major golf course redevelopment plan, the Club recently formed the Golf Course Upgrading Committee (GCUC) to oversee the project’s development and progress. Formed in April this year, the GCUC is helmed by Captain Bobby Wee with Vice- Captain Joe Pereira, with members Naranjan Singh, Tony Yue, Ting Sa Tee and Jeffrey Yu. Each comes with their expertise to complement the project, in various fields such as soil investigation and engineering. Historical Facts The idea to upgrade the course was first mooted in 2006 when it was recognised that, since its initial modeling works 17 years ago, the Club has not embarked on any major upgrading of the course to improve and increase its value. Current Progress The current golf committee is continuing preparatory work that began two years ago. Tenders have been called to invite golf course architects to draw up a master plan, engage quantity surveyors and invite irrigation consultants – all expected to be completed by the end of October. Plans will be prepared for members’ approval at the next AGM in March. Detailed Studies Comparative studies were done between the JCC course and other notable courses in Singapore. Some of the more popular courses reported a trend of remodeling their course every three to ten years, with continuous upgrades being carried out even when the course was remodeled just a year ago. In contrast, our course has not been upgraded for 17 years. Current Problems The golf course has been facing various problems, such as: • most of the sub-soil drainage pipes are choked and not in proper working condition • insufficient sand capping on the fairways and rough • contamination of nutgrass (weeds) on about 85% of the tee boxes and fairways • organic build up of at least 150mm in most areas On top of the above problems, the back nine suffers additionally due to it being completely backfilled from swampland. The 6m of peaty soil is followed by soft clay underneath, and as many knows, the back-nine suffers from a high water table. These affect the course’s drainage system and members’ quality of play. Future Aims The GCUC aims to address the above problems with the overall redevelopment of the course, while improving the course and allowing for a versatile concept for walking, buggy-play and night golfing. The committee also aims to increase the putting surface, introduce good open drainage concepts to improve surface run-off, review the length of certain holes for safety reasons, re-align tees, as well as install new smart irrigation systems with wall to wall coverage. Certain trees will also be transplanted to increase sunlight and allow airflow to the turf grass, as well as introduce more appropriate trees for the back nine. The committee expects that the project will take about a year per nine-hole and work will most likely start on the front nine first, once members give their nod of approval at the coming AGM. 12 jurong country club
NEWS Interim Improvements On The Course Rip raps, otherwise known as “rock armour”, were erected around the ponds of the second nine to prevent erosion. As many know, our second nine sits on a soft clay ground and erosion inevitably occurs due to ground movement.
