UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
Golden Boys and Girls
At the recent “Fun in the Sun” Swim Meet hosted at The Pines on Sunday
31 May, a group of our junior swimmers flew the club flag high when
they returned with 18 Gold medals for Jurong Country Club.
This is only the second year running that our Jurong swimmers entered the
Meet and we are honoured that our boys and girls did us proud. Here’s a
little insight into what these little dynamos thought about their win.
Catherine Loy (9)
I want to win more medals for
the September AIMS! Training
and focus helped me win this
event… I’ll double up for the
next. I like winning because
it makes me feel like I am a
special swimmer. My mantra?
Never give up!
Aaron Siow (10)
I’m overjoyed! This is
my first time winning
an event and it makes
me happy to finally get
a trophy! I hope to win
first place for my next
individual event… but I
need to work hard on my
butterfly stroke…
Huang Kangsheng Carson (13)
I like to win because it shows that at
least I’m getting something out of my
training. I want to thank my coach for
pushing me on and on and on during
training, and that has been what
helped me in adding more medals
to my shelf! Training and focus is
really important in any competition
and I hope that at the next event, I’ll
win another award or two!
Amanda Baey (13)
My parents and friends, plus
training and focus of course,
helped me win. To me, winning
is a reward for my hard work…
but I also enjoy Badminton!
Ong Guan Lin (11)
Focus and hard work helped me
win… For my next event, I want
to break my Personal Best for
backstroke! Swimming is to
me like an exam, challenging
all the difficult questions (eg
personal best time)!
Goh Wei Jie (14)
I enjoy competitive
swimming as much
as I enjoy living! So
my aim is to win the
next event! I believe my
endurance helped me
win!
FROM THE COACH
So, Coach Leonard, the guy who made
it all possible! This is only the Club’s
second time joining the competition,
what did you think of the team’s chances
BEFORE the event?
I was more concern about the process of
getting the team ready for the swim meet
than winning it. When we won 18 out of
the 22 events, I was pleasantly surprised!
When JCC was crowned the overall
winner, what was your reaction?
My first reaction was surprise, but the
kids had really done the club proud! It
was also their hard work from all the
hours of training.
What did you think worked for this
year’s competition that was missing from
last year’s?
We were better prepared and the kids
were mentally ready compared to last
year. They believed they would do better
this year…
jurong country club
Who did you think were the brightest
stars of the competition?
Catherine Loy, Goh Wei Jie, Ong Guan
Lin, Amanda Baey, Malcolm Baey
What are your hopes for the swim team?
To be able to have a finalist in next year’s
national swim meet.
What kind of training regime did the
team go through?
Technical, Tactical, Mental
With this win, will you be putting them
through a more strenuous training
programme with higher expectations?
I will plan according to their ability and
take it one step at a time, as I would not
want the kids to lose interest at this stage
of their “swimming career”. Let us build
a stronger swim team for the future and
increase the participation rate of the
“Learn to Swim” program.
