FOREWORD
Someone asked me recently what is the value of our club membership. While I
rattled off the figure, something else was on my mind. What is the real value of a
club membership?
Where lies the value? Is it in old decrepit buildings
that scream memories, legacies and heritage,
spanking new facades that assert hopes, expectations
and desires… or is it in the heart of its members?
I prefer to think it’s the latter that builds a club,
because while we can buy hardware, it is the “heartware”
that defines a club. Members make and mark
a club. Dollars make sense to operate, manage and
sustain, but nothing rules like the heart.
And it is the heart of Jurong members that have made
so many of our past fund-raising events a success.
Time and again, members and friends of Jurong
Country Club have turned out in droves to raise
funds and help disadvantaged families in Singapore,
especially those around the Jurong area. When the
2004 Tsunami hit our neighbour, Jurong’s heart-ware
was once again tapped to rebuild many destroyed
lives. This year’s recently concluded YHI Jurong
Open Charity Golf was no different. I am heartened by the response shown by
members and friends, and would like to take this moment to personally thank
everyone who has contributed to the success of the Open.
Definitely, the value of a Jurong Country Club membership lies in our heart-ware
– our heart for our friends and compassion for our neighbours, coupled with an
unmistakable passion for life!
A passion that has kept the walls of the Club ringing even as they need repeated
coats of paint to keep them spanking new. Despite our maturing Golfers’
Terrace looking far from the polished expensive cafes of some newer clubs,
members and guests favour its casual intimacy. Diehard fans of the Sunset
Terrace enjoy its laid-back serenity, especially in the muted evening hours. And
though continually plagued by various maintenance problems that require real
attention, our golf course continues to enjoy almost full capacities, and we
continue to draw more. If the success of the recent Korean Night is anything to
go by, our club is positively “happening”!
So as we enter the final quarter of this year and prepare for new waves of change
in 2010, I hope one thing will not change in Jurong. That is the heart of our
Jurong members. May it always burn with passion for golf, compassion for our
friends and light the halls of the club with the ferocity of a tigress defending her
den.
To this end, I bid you all join me as we celebrate the renewal of family ties with
our annual Lantern Festival on 27 September. Then on 16 and 17 October, let
us celebrate our friendships with hearty German fare and bountiful steins in an
extended 2-day long Oktoberfest!
