So go ahead and keep writing...and drop in those letters at the India Club mail box now! Antakshari Antakshari 2010 was one of the good events organised by India Club. Back after a gap of two years, the hosts Chandramohan and Shobhana spared no efforts in their groundwork, and their lilting voices only added colour to the occasion. Divided into three categories – children, friends and family ensured that all had the opportunity to sing & test their film based knowledge. Ample opportunities were thrown at the audience too, who responded with equal enthusiasm. While congratulating the Club on hosting such family events, I am sure maximum members’ participation would encourage India Club to go the extra mile. We look forward to more family programmes. Govind Katara Membership No. 3951 &Best letter Jordan Tour A visit to Jordan was always on my list of travels so what better opportunity than to take the 4 day all inclusive tour arranged by India Club and Cox and Kings packed with activities and included visits to Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum and The Dead Sea. We drove to the famous rock city Petra. En-route there was a lot of singing and dancing in the 4 hour long journey followed by antakshari and games. Petra is the most famous attraction in Jordan. The beautiful rosecolored stone with the sunlight against it is truly magnificent. We drove to the picturesque Wadi Rum by bus. Dinner and dancing went on well into the night after which it was a wonderful experience to spend a night in a tent under the starry skies. Temperatures do rise and fall quickly in the wadi but going down to –5 degrees was something unexpected in the month of April. This was followed by a jeep ride next morning through the dramatic desert landscape with its beautiful rock formation. We stopped to see the Bedouins and their camels in the desert. The bus was waiting for us at the end of our wadi drive to take us to the Dead Sea. A four hour drive took us to the lowest point on earth – the Dead Sea. Driving down to the Dead Sea, which is 400 meters below sea level is without doubt one of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes. Dead Sea, because of its rich cocktail of salts and minerals, is known for its curative properties and has evolved as a major attraction for health and wellness. Morning saw us scramble to collect the Dead Sea mud which we would carry with us back home. On the last day of our tour we were like one big family. We left for Amman by mid-day and reached in time for an Indian lunch followed by a visit to the Citadel Hill. This archaeological landmark features remnants from several different cultures and you can see a unique blend of the old and the new. It houses the Temple of Hercules, a Byzantine Basillica and the Jordan Archaeological Museum. The same evening was our flight back and with heavy hearts and with promises to keep in touch said our good byes and headed home. It was indeed an exhilarating experience and I look forward to being a part of the next tour. Maria Gupta Membership No. 3931 Protect Childhood Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, ExHealth, India Club and SAATHI held a seminar on the Protect Childhood Campaign on 21st April 2010 at the India Club at 5pm. One hundred and twenty ladies attended this seminar. Dr. Saroj Thapa, President of SAATHI was the keynote speaker while Mrs. Sangeeta Matta Verma, wife of Consul General of India was the chief guest. Dr. Saroj Thapa showed us slides about the behavioural patterns of abused children. She stressed on the need to report cases of abused children that we come across. We were given leaflets on Child Abuse Awareness. Dr. Saroj Thapa said that SAA- THI is still in the baby stage so there are many issues which are not yet resolved. Ancy from ExHealth also highlighted us with the problem of child abuse in the UAE and how it is being solved slowly but surely. Finally we were shown a film, Arabana, which stressed on the need for diligence about protecting children by celebrated Emirati film maker Navla Al Khaja which was disturbing and short. All the ladies then enjoyed some hot snacks and beverages. Mavis D’Souza Membership No. 2612 Swimming Gala We would very much like to appreciate the hard work and dedication with which the Annual Swimming Gala is conducted and this year was no different. The event was organized smoothly and it was good to see so much encouragement given to all - young and old, especially the youngerchildren. It was good to see India Club awarding the overall prize to the younger age group. Satish & Trupti Dave Membership No. 4259 SFS This is regarding your contribution to SFS families by donating the two sewing machines from the Recycle, Sew, Serve that was handed to us by India Club. The families who have recieved the sewing machines were greatly thankful for your contribution, as it will greatly benefit their financial situation. SFS would like to deeply thank you for your kindness. SFS •Stands for special families support group •Started December 9th, 1999 •Every since we started we have been meeting at least once a month with the exception of the summer camp we hold during the summer where we meet about 3 times a week. Aim To help families cope better practically and emotionally and to realize that they are not alone in their situations. The main aim was to bring families together on a common platform and focus on coping strategies for the whole family, especially the fathers and the siblings we regularly have visits from grand parents and try and give them the same kind of emotional support we give our families. SFS holds several public events especially during the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) and the Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS), we organize fashion shows, dance performances etc… these events are organized not only to integrate the families with and without individuals with special needs but also to encourage our families to enjoy the simple joys of life that are so often taken for granted by most people. SFS runs a structured volunteer program for volunteers ranging from 6 year olds to 60 year olds. These volunteers are part of our family… a lot of our children do not have friends, but our volunteers provide the love and support our children need. An important task of SFS has been to spread awareness among the different sections of the society, about the needs of these families. There is a need to educate the masses about the various syndromes and disabilities and how to deal with a situation when they are confronted with such a child in public.
