The Big Walk
Home.....
The plight of the homeless was brought home to shoppers in Cheltenham with an innovative
lounge installation outside the Beechwood Shopping Centre on a busy shopping weekend just
before Xmas.
As people thronged the streets doing their Xmas shopping homeless charity Emmaus built a
lovely, cosy lounge in the Strand in the freezing open air as part of The Big Walk Home appeal.
The lounge complete with sofas, carpet, chairs, sideboard, fireplace, candles and a Xmas tree
attracted local people to come over and talk to 'companions' from Emmaus to find out how
the charity helps homeless people get back on their feet by offering them a place to live and
work. After gathering outside the lounge supporters set off in groups on different walks around
Cheltenham talking to people about homelessness and handing out leaflets. The Emmaus van
was also parked close to the lounge installation and people donated warm clothes and items
such as gloves, pants and scarves.
David Riera from Whistle & Taylor Creative said “The whole point of it was that as we were
walking home to the lounge and other people were walking home from doing their Xmas
shopping that maybe they’d think about what those who don’t have a home to go to have to
endure”
Vicki Rowntree from Whistle & Taylor Creative who helped organize the event said 'On the day
there was a great sense of community spirit. People from local businesses and all walks of life
came together and helped spread the word about this inspirational charity. Emmaus really
does make a difference by supporting people to work their way out of homelessness by
providing meaningful work as well a stable home for as long as someone needs it. It's very
moving when you hear personal stories from companions about how their lives have been
transformed and their self-esteem restored. The Big Walk home provided a great opportunity
to talk to the public about the great work that they do so that they can continue to help more
people who are still without a home"
January Sale......... Survival Rules
Rule No.1 – Plan
What I mean by this is plan if you
can what you want to buy, don’t
rush in and buy the 6th white t-
shirt that you will have sat in your
drawer. Also plan the shops you
want to hit, this way you won’t
end up buying pieces in the
wardrobe that you don’t need,
before getting to the pieces you
do want or need. You could end
up spending more than planned.
Rule No.2 – Do not
panic!
Don’t panic buy pieces, look at how much
is and work out how much you are saving.
Would you of purchased your required
item on offer before the sale? If you didn’t,
doesn’t mean you need it. Is it worth
buying if it is only has the reduction of £1?
Don’t panic buy!
Rule No.3 – Shop Online
Some brands have more in the sale online than in stores. Check this before you
venture out into the cold and do this from the comfort of your own sofa with a cup of
tea.
www.uniquemediagroup.co.uk

Rule No.4 – Do it in Style
Fancy something exclusive or designer? Shop in style which means queue in style.
Did you know that the Harrod’s sale offer hot chocolate and blankets to the queues,
you will also be entertained by their string quartet.
8
Rule No.5 - Remember to Eat & Drink
Keep hydrated otherwise you might make unwise decisions with your purchases.
Eating will energise you if you’re planning a big shop!
Rule No.6 – Go Early
This Boxing Day I got up early and hit the shops
at 9am, there were less people around, no long
wait at the fitting rooms, it’s almost tidy and the
queues at the tills weren’t huge. Bliss!
Rule No.7 – Man Up!
Remember to take a man to carry your
bags!
Have you tried a Ritual yet? Well not quite a
ritual but Rituals Hammam Delight Shower
Foam. It’s a blend of aromatic and revitalising
Eucalptus and Rosemary to refresh body, mind
and soul. I have to admit I found the smell to
over powering of Eucalptus, it certainly woke
me up in the morning.
Melt away with Merumaya Cleansing Balm.
New to the Cleansing world this made in
Britain cleanser claims to double cleanse by
removing make up and actually cleaning
your skin. This smells amazing and made
my skin feel silky smooth. It removed all my
make up without leaving stains on the towel.
I was referred to LNH Management Solutions when looking to setup
a new business venture. I've been very pleased with the time Lee
initially spent with me advising on the business structure and
helping with all of the necessary set-up and registration
requirements. Since this, Lee regularly keeps contact to ensure the
business is running smoothly and has always been available to
offer his support in a personal and approachable manner. I've been
highly impressed with his services and would have no hesitation in
recommending him to other small businesses.
Dear Chris and Caroline, Thank you again for the
outstanding service. As you know, I had a specific idea in
mind which had some unusual features. I did not feel
confident that the first company I approached could
achieve the design I wanted after their repeated failure to
provide a drawing to my specifications. In contrast you
provided the drawing I needed quickly and efficiently
which, together with your professional and caring
approach, left me in no doubt about placing an order with
you.
My mother and I are delighted with the stone, and I know
my father would have liked it. It's funny but it seems so
appropriate for him, with its height, slim width and stylish
features. I hope I can equal your high standards in the small
planting area in front of the stone with my flowers.
You both do such an important job and you do it extremely
well.
Emmaus
Emmaus is a homelessness charity with a difference, providing more than just a bed for the night for people who
have experienced homelessness and social exclusion.
We provide a home for as long as someone needs it, as well as meaningful work in our social enterprise. This
works to help to restore feelings of self-esteem and give our companions, as residents are known, the opportuni
to regain control of their lives.
How it works
There are currently 25 Emmaus communities spread across the UK, providing a home and meaningful work to
around 623 formerly homeless people. There are also a further seven groups working to establish new
communities. We are working towards a target of being able to offer 750 companion places by 2017.
Like any successful community, Emmaus is most successful when everyone makes a contribution, working
together in the social enterprise to generate the funds that support themselves and others.
Companions are expected to work for 40 hours per week, or to the best of their ability, in the charity's social
enterprise and are required to sign off all benefits, with the exception of housing benefit, which is claimed to help
to support the community. The intention is for each community to eventually become self-sufficient, supporting
itself with the revenue it generates through its businesses.
The community model has a huge impact on restoring self-esteem as companions take responsibility for keeping
their community going, working to support themselves and others.
Emmaus is not about giving hand-outs, it’s about providing an opportunity for each individual to work to
overcome homelessness. This approach has been proven to produce long-term, sustainable results and, for
many who have been stuck in a cycle of homelessness, offers the support they need to overcome this.
Our impact
For every £1 spent with Emmaus there is an £11 social, economic and environmental return on investment.
This was the finding of a Social Return on Investment study carried out on behalf of Emmaus. The research
showed that Emmaus can deliver a significant impact, with savings to the healthcare system, a reduction in crim
reoffending and savings to the benefits bill.
Read the full report here.
Solidarity
Solidarity is key to the Emmaus ethos, and means helping those less fortunate than yourself. Everyone at
Emmaus, companions, staff, trustees and volunteers, is encouraged to carry out acts of solidarity.
For companions in particular, this has a huge impact on their self-esteem, showing them the impact they as an
individual can have on the lives of others and the value they can offer.
Emmaus in the world
Emmaus isn’t just in the UK, in fact it originally started in France in the 1940s. Since then Emmaus has grown in
an international movement with more than 300 groups based in 36 countries across the world.
Stef Thomas
Five ways to kickstart your networking
in 2015
Do you get a lot of success from your business networking? Or
do you go along and are never sure how to make it "work" for
you?
Do you watch the people who are making networking work for
them and wonder what they do differently?
This month, Stefan Thomas, author of Business Networking for
Dummies gives us his ideas on five changes we can make whi
1. You have to be there, regularly. If you make only one change to your networking in 2015 th
do this. Plan your networking activity and be there. Don't think you can only turn up once or t
a year when you need to make some sales. You're expecting people to want to buy when you
want to sell. Life doesn't work that way round.
Think about the furniture stores which advertise on telly. You know, the ones who have had a
on since sometime in 1975! Why do you think they keep advertising week in week out? They
have to be there at the moment when you start thinking of buying new sofa.
They don't just pop up when they need to make some sales and neither should you. Be there
consistently. Then you will be there when someone in the room needs your product or service
2. Arrive with positive intent. What are you intending to
get from this networking meeting? Are you
approaching the meeting positively? Or are you just
turning up and hoping for the best?
At the very least turn up with a smile and enjoy the
experience. I'm always amazed when people turn up to
networking meetings with a face like a smacked arse
and then wonder why everyone else responds in the
same manner.
www.uniquemediagroup.co.uk

3. Prepare. Most networking meetings have an introductions round - at 4Networking we
call it the 40 Second round. This is your opportunity to engage with the other people in the
room. Prepare it like you would any other marketing material. Write it down and, even
better, record it on your smartphone to make sure it is the right length and that it sounds
like you.
You wouldn't "wing it" with any of your other marketing material. Don't do it here.
20
4. ALWAYS follow up. What happens when you leave the networking meeting? You
check your 'phone. Wonder why you've got a missed call from your child's school,
wonder why your best client has Emailed you and realise you're now running late for
your next call.
In short, you start to forget the conversations you had. And everyone else is the same.
So you have the opportunity to be the one who stands out by always remembering to
follow up. Call the people you have met and arrange to have a second, longer
conversation with them. Don't wait for them to come to you.
en
wice
sale
5. Join up your networking with social media. You don't "get" Twitter or LinkedIn? Tough.
It's too late to pretend that social media isn't going to affect business. You have the
opportunity to be regularly in touch with your prospects on social media. You have the
opportunity to remind them of your expertise. You have the opportunity to be there at
exactly the moment when they realise they need your service.
The things is, your competitors have that opportunity too. You may be better at what you
do than your competitors. But they are better at keeping in touch on social media. Learn
how to use it properly. Find someone in your networking group who can help you. But
don't pretend you can do without it.
.
The world is joined up online now and the people who are truly benefitting are those who
realise that face to face relationships are even more important than ever. Those who join
up their real life and virtual relationships build the strongest connections and the most
mutually profitable networking.
Got any networking tips of your own? Share them
Gloucester. The Trust also works with Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse Support Service to reduce
the level of domestic abuse and improve the safety of victims and their families.
Hollie's dad Nick said: "We are so humbled to be nominated let alone actually win. It sets off the
year for us. "Bearing in mind what happened at the beginning of the year and what we are doing
through the Trust now. It is all down to the community. "We can't thank the community enough for
the support they have given us."
HOLLIE-DAY HAIR AT GLOUCESTERSHIRE COLLEGE
The Hollie-day Hair event was the latest way in which Gloucestershire college has worked with the
trust since Hollie's tragic death earlier this year. Haircuts were on offer from Gloucestershire
College students in return for donations to the Hollie Gazzard Trust.
The level one hair and beauty students spent the afternoon styling hair of all lengths and shapes in
return for a minimum donation of £1 to the charity. The Hollie-day Hair event was the latest way in
which the college has worked with the trust since Hollie's tragic death earlier this year.
The charity has provided financial support to aspiring hair and beauty students at the college. The
Gloucester campus hosted the event, where the students offered curling, straightening, hair up,
hair down and temporary hair colouring.
Level 1 hair and beauty students, Level 5 salon managers and Level 3 marketing apprentices
helped to organise the event.
16 DAYS OF ACTION
The 16 Days of Action started on the 25 November Elimination of Violence against Women and
Girls day and came to an end on International Human Rights day, Wednesday 10 December.
The Trust plaid an important role across the 16 days.
The Trust were invited by Tewkesbury BC to open up a Healthy Relationship Pop in event at
Innsworth Community Center. They attended the 'reclaim the night' March held in Cheltenham on
the same day that was attended by over 500 people. Nick then spoke at a 'Domestic Abuse:
Everyone's Business' Masterclass organised by Safer Gloucester. Nick then spoke at 'Domestic
Abuse and Stalking' Masterclass organised by: University of Gloucestershire, Hollie Gazzard Trust,
Gloucestershire Police and Cheltenham Borough Council. Nick and Chloe were also invited
Tewkesbury BC to the council offices where they had a stand and spoke to various agencies in
attendance. Finally, Gloucester Cathedral was lit up in purple in memory of Hollie on 10 December
to mark the end of the 16 days.
BBC GLOUCESTERSHIRE CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION AT GLOUCESTERSHIRE CATHEDRAL
A big thank you to our friends at BBC Gloucestershire who raised £1350 from the retiring collection
at the annual Christmas celebration at Gloucestershire Cathedral. This will be split between the
two chosen charities, HGT and SANDS. Thank you to all those that attended and contributed
@Chelt52
What is @Chelt52?
A social project to share a different bit of
Cheltenham each week...
...and unearth the town's hidden gems!
@Chelt52 is a rotation curation social media account; which means the account rotates
spokesperson each week, inviting different people to become the ‘voice’ of Cheltenham.
Every week for 52 weeks, a Cheltenham tweeter takes over the @Chelt52 Twitter account and
shows the world what their Cheltenham is about – and what they contribute to the town. Each
Monday a new person takes charge of the account and shows a different side to the town.
Individuals, businesses and organisations in and around Cheltenham are given the opportunity to
have their say on why they think our town is great.
Our intention since we started @Chelt52 has been to collate a wide range of participants that can
portray the diverse lifestyles that make Cheltenham unique. We’ve invited individuals,
organisations, causes and businesses to help us ‘compere’ a fun range of social media-loving
Cheltonians.
@Chelt52 now enters its second year after a very successful inaugural first year. We are looking to
grow the project even more and become recognised as a ‘go-to’ place to learn more about the area
@Chelt52 is organised by Liam McKinnon and Sophie Fryer
What is ‘rotation curation’?
Rotation curation - also #RotationCuration - is the concept of rotating the spokesperson on a broad
scoped social media account. Such a scope can be a location, a country, an organisation, a group,
and so on. The concept is prominent on Twitter.
Why get involved?
Our project is a great place for individuals, organisations and businesses to meet new people, spread the
word about what they do and interact with a whole new audience.
Taking a week on @Chelt52 is particularly great for independent organisations who may not have a large
Twitter following, as our 9,000 strong account is a great place to get a message out to a large Cheltenhambased
audience.
We have found that many people have discovered new places and things to do through @Chelt52, and we
have unearthed many of the town’s ‘hidden gems’. Businesses can create potential leads for new customers
after a week on the account.
Advertising opportunities
We have an opportunity for organisations and businesses to become @Chelt52 Associates and advertise on
our website.
For only £100, brands, businesses and organisations can feature on an 'Associate' page of our website for
the year. This will include their logo, a description of their services and a link to their website.
You don’t have to take part in the account to advertise with @Chelt52. If you would like to discuss advertising
with us, please contact hello@cheltenham52.co.uk.
All money spent on advertising will go straight back into marketing our project – we want to get our message
out to as many people as possible!
Year One Highlights
In the first year of the project, we were joined by notable names such as Martin Horwood MP, Vince Freeman
(The Voice), Gloucestershire Constabulary, Ellenborough Park, Thrill Collins, GlosCol and Cheltenham Town
Ladies FC.
Year Two – Look out for...
Each and every one of our tweeters in year two of the project will be able to share something special!
UniqueFinancial
CLAIMING VAT ON PRE-REGISTRATION EXPENDITURE
VAT is an administrative minefield for accountants, let alone business owners.
However a very important piece of favourable VAT legislation that all business owners should be
aware of is the entitlement to reclaim VAT on some of their expenditure made before they became
registered. Of course you must make sure that both the business and the entity are the same one that
made the original purchase (i.e. the business has not changed from a sole trade to a company).
There are different rules that apply however to the purchase of goods and the purchase of services.
VAT on the Purchase of Pre-Registration Goods
Businesses can reclaim VAT on the purchase of goods prior to registration providing that the goods
were purchased within the four years prior to the date of registration, and they fall within one of the
below categories:
1. The goods purchased will result in a sale/supply on which the business will be able to charge
VAT (i.e. the goods haven’t been used, sold or consumed at the date of registration). A good example
would be a builder who has a number of building materials in stock at the point of registering for VAT.
These materials in stock would be expected to be used on a future sale which will be charged VAT, an
therefore the original VAT on the purchase of the materials can be reclaimed.
2. VAT can also be reclaimed on goods which were purchased and used prior to registration, as
long as they continue to be used after registration to contribute in generating sales/supply on which
the business will be able to charge VAT. Examples of this would typically be capital assets such as
vans, plant/machinery, computer equipment, etc. Despite being used prior to the registration, you can
still recover 100% of the original VAT on the purchase.
VAT on the Purchase of Pre-Registration Services
It is extremely difficult to be able to prove whether a service paid for prior to registration has resulted
in a service provided to the business after registration. Therefore the rules for reclaiming VAT on the
purchase of services prior to registration only allow for purchases up to six months prior to the date o
registration.
Unique Football
The Robins @CTFCofficial
Oh dear......the axe rather surprisingly fell on Mark Yates tenure with Cheltenham Town, I thought he
was hanging on in there but Keith Baker decided that a change is for the best.
"It was the most difficult decision I've had to make in my time here," chairman Paul Baker said in a
statement on Yates' sacking.
Birmingham-born Yates played 230 games for the club between 1999 and 2004, scoring 22 goals,
captaining the side under Steve Cotterill when they won the 2002 play-off final against Rushden &
Diamonds to earn promotion to the third tier.
He then returned from Kidderminster Harriers as manager in December 2009 after Martin Allen left
by mutual consent.
The Robins reached the League Two play-offs in 2011-12 and again the following season, but
Yates was unable to emulate Cotterill and John Ward, who led them to promotion to League One in
2006-07.
His final match in charge was a 4-1 home defeat by Wycombe on Saturday.
"Mark was understandably very upset and I was too," Baker's statement continued.
"Everybody who knows him will have a lot of sadness with the decision we've had to take, but we
have to look after the business and look at results and performances.
"Something is not quite right and the manager has to take responsibility."
So Paul Buckle was wheeled into The Whaddon Road hot seat, he is ex boss of Luton Town and
Bristol Rovers but had been working as a Technical Director in the United States.
Paul Buckle stated on BBC Sport:
"It's been a whirlwind 24 hours, that's for sure.
"Things have moved very quickly. I had other offers in the States, when I made my mind up to go
back into management, but after speaking to the chairman this job moved right to the top of the list.
"I knew in my gut that this was right."

36
So far so good for Mr Buckle with three 1 – 1 draws and a 1-0 loss against Dover in the FA Cup is
not a bad start so far considering we were letting in loads of goals in the previous four games at
end of Mark Yates tenure. We are hoping by the time you read this that we are celebrating with
six point as Cheltenham go away to Exeter on Boxing Day and Newport at home on 28th
December.
Keep fighting and Come on You Robins ?
